How can you downgrade the importance of deprivation when assessing need?

@fjireflycaramel

I utterly absolutely agree with you on all points. I was trying to imagine how to put the case to a Tory voter ...

I suspect it's hard to hear 'tone' on a messageboard, particuarly on such a topic where it's clear the country is deeply divided.

Tinkerbell456 · 25/01/2020 19:42

In fairness, as has been pointed out, it depends on what you are deprived of. I am deprived of a villa on Lake Como. Does this make me deprived of adequate shelter? No. People deprived of basic shelter, adequate nutritious food, access to healthcare etc of course need access to services.

fjreflycaramel · 25/01/2020 19:58

@Dolorabelle Sorry I did get on my soapbox a bit there, it's something I feel very strongly about if you hadn't realised Grin

UndertheCedartree · 25/01/2020 20:03

@Dolorabelle - ah, thanks!

So do I. But I really worry that the forcing of working people into an underclass which seemed to start with Thatcher - but in fact has been a feature of the British class system for centuries - is becoming entrenched, and people affected are giving up on themselves .

And most attempts to "fix" this are hopelessly middle-class & well-meaning but ineffective.

AgeShallNotWitherHer · 25/01/2020 20:14

Dolorabelle - agree. Well put. And fjreflycaramel - I agree. But it isn't just a question of money

Typical of my live in Tory Landlord back in my 20's. His favourite was 'poverty is self inflicted'. When I started telling him about teaching in an area where there was no employment (80's recession, the local steelworks & other manufacturers had shut down) children had awful scars from trying to cook their own meals or turned up hungry & dirty he was strangely silent. He also had no answer on how to improve your lot if you're on minimum wage & not skilled or educated. Funny that.

fjreflycaramel · 25/01/2020 20:35

It's all intentional, google Illich, Gottesman,Bowles and Gintis and 'Correspondence theory'

Neednewwellies · 25/01/2020 21:54

I’m no Tory but I didn’t post it as an anti Tory rant. It just seemed incredulous to me that level of deprivation would be downgraded as a factor in the assessment of need. That makes no sense to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

YANBU to think that!

Thanks for the reference. Interesting.
