Or are drivers on the road getting worse?

I'm on the road more then I used to be - used to commute on the train - now WFH and have days with DD driving to classes etc but am I wrong in thinking the way people drive on the roads now is absolutely rubbish??
You even wonder if they've read the Highway Code?

  1. came to round about, car to my right was turning into the road I was in, so I was clear to go. Guy driver on my left pulls out, and gives me a raised fist for pulling out when I clearly had right of way considering I was too his right..... I was indicating as well!

  2. today driving down a busy high street, car in front is driving particular slow and breaking unnecessarily. A car on the other side of the road cuts across the slow driver to try and parallel park in a space far to small.... blocking our flow of traffic in the process. Instead of mr slow driver, driving around the bad parker, when it was clear to do so, he sat.... and waited.... for ages. Then eventually drove around him...
I have no problem waiting for someone to park, but surely if it's clear to go around them, you do?

That's just two examples but I see plenty of people in wrong lanes for round abouts, not indicating and not looking where they are going!!

I've noticed a ton more people who can't seem to make a basic turn, in either direction, without swerving wide first. So if they are turning into a left hand junction, very easily done in any vehicle apart from a lorry, they swerve right first into the other lane to then turn left. Confused I don't get that in the slightest, are they just that stupid? I've seen people do that even with cars coming towards them. Or they swerve so far left to turn right they almost hit the kerb.

@Junie70 if you're referring to when two lanes merge into one, you are meant to use both lanes up until the merge point and then merge in turn (like a zip). I have this in the town I live in as there are roadworks, I drive right to the front of the queue and then merge in as I am supposed to. Not my fault 30-40 cars have chosen to queue for 400 yards. Perfectly legal and what you are actually supposed to do.
You can honk, flash your lights, flip me the bird or whatever but maybe you should actually refer back to your highway code

Yes!
There's a roundabout near me that's notorious for people being in wrong lane.. They're meant to go right.. 3rd exit but go across to 2nd exit..
So they cut you up exiting... This happened the other day dh was driving.. The woman tried to cut in but couldn't.. Started flapping her arms etc.
I swear if I was driving and kids wernt in car I'd be tempted to do a short sharp brake test as they cut in. (I wouldn't but the temptation is great)

If both cars come from same direction, we always go straight ahead 2nd exit. . So left lane.. You can always tell the ones that pull up on right hand side and will try cut in because they've been up your ass all the way down the Rd leading to the roundabout.. Its a 30 but everyone likes to go 40 plus. We stick at 30 and people Hate it. But it's tuff it's the law.

Omg yes a road near me is rammed with parked cars around a bend. It's a 20mph road but I seem the be the ONLY person who slows down to check there isn't going to be a car pelting round the corner.
I do think that doing something illegal while driving should result in harsher consequences. Its a lethal machine your getting in and I think some people forget that.

I was walking and stopped at a junction, car waiting to turn right, van behind but not enough space for him to turn left so
He drive over the pavement inches from my toes

I guess it was my fault for being on the pavement 🥺

Points are meaningless

I’d rather 3 points and a month ban for driving offences a fine. The ban won’t lose your job but make life difficult

6 points and a two month ban, you should have learnt last time, and a fine

9 points 3 months ban fine and a retest to get your licence back

12 points you really have no respect for life so a 3 year ban, fine and an intensive driving course and retest

All tests will be at the drivers expense

if you're referring to when two lanes merge into one, you are meant to use both lanes up until the merge point and then merge in turn (like a zip)

Some of those scenarios specifically say that you are supposed to zip.

But when you are on a motorway and they say a lane is closing, you get over in plenty of time - only the cheeky twotsits roar up the inside or outside and push in.

The main problem is you can't have both systems functioning at one time because you get one lot of people thinking the others are just stupid for queuing, and the other half thinking the others are cheeky for pushing in.

cologne4711 · 25/01/2020 13:09

Highway Code rule 134 says:
You should follow the signs and road markings and get into the lane as directed. In congested road conditions do not change lanes unnecessarily. Merging in turn is recommended but only if safe and appropriate when vehicles are travelling at a very low speed, e.g. when approaching road works or a road traffic incident. It is not recommended at high speed

So more or less supporting what I said above. Low speed, merge in turn, if you're on a motorway, don't roar up and cut in.

Oh yes! I keep saying this. People don't indicate at roundabouts or junctions then play heck with you if you pull out, if they're not indicating I go!

As for boy racers with their exhausts blowing, driving with one harm out the window at 90 mph how do they not kill more people? I seem to constantly be stopping for people crossing the road without looking, engrossed in their phones or people doing dangerous manoeuvres.

Then you have the elderly doing 15 mph, shitting themselves whenever another car appears and always breaking.

You need to have confidence and your wits about you to drive on our mad roads nowadays.
