I am absolutely in a makeup/skin care rut. Please can you all give me some recommendations? I really feel shit at the moment and need a boost but just feel lost about what to buy.

Skin care- I’ve heard Emma hardie and pixi are good, the vitamin e ranges? I have normal to dry skin with lots of pigmentations/scarring I’d like to reduce and have heard vit e is good for that

Foundation, I like my skin to be covered but not really heavy. I’ve heard good things about georgio Armani luminous silk? But is it worth the price tag?

Mascara- I only like waterproof mascara but want something that will make my lashes long and thick

Eyelash curlers- I used to have some great ones from Tesco that really made them curly but the replacement ones I’ve bought just aren’t the same

Please all, give me all your fave makeup and skin care tips and tricks! 🙏

I'm not one to spend much on makeup but I swear by Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation. It stays on all day and is not heavy. It also lasts ages as a little goes a long way.

Thestrangestthing · 23/01/2020 22:38

Cerave moisturiser. I used to get patches of dry skin and an oily nose and its much better now. Not to thick like some creams. Apparently the cleaner is good too.
I get nova lash extentions because I have shit Lashes and its worth it to me. I barely wear any make up anymore. A nice light foundation that I used to use was mac water weight foundation. Has decent coverage but not thick.

cwtchesandprosecco · 23/01/2020 23:50

Fenty beauty long wear (comes in Matt or hydrating). Light but builds well and the shade range is amazing.

Primark's dupe comes out better in blind tests, I think.

Primark's dupe comes out better in blind tests, I think.

I remember reading about it last year. I think the general consensus was that Estee Lauder has better coverage, lasts longer and has about 50 more shades but the Primark one is a great dupe if you're on a budget! It's certainly great value.

I probably only buy one new bottle per year so Estee will continue being my small extravagance especially as I doubt Primark have my shade Grin

Charlotte Tilbury makeup is to die for. I recently bought the Hollywood flawless foundation and I'm in love. Pricey and possibly heavier than you asked for, but my face looks airbrushed when I use it so it's worth it.

Double wear just didn't suit my skin and was too dry, disappointing.

There's a great skincare thread on the style and beauty boards OP. Get over there and you will find all the inspiration you need.

ButterflyRuns · 24/01/2020 00:26

I also love Charlotte Tilbury makeup, but Estee Lauder has some really good foundation too which I think would work for OP.

Why not go into a department store and have a makeover + samples?

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 24/01/2020 00:40

The best thing I ever did was allow one of those scary orange-faced women with EMPHATIC eyebrows to give me a makeover at a department store beauty counter.

She only did one side of my face (yes, I know this is a ploy) until I agreed to buy pretty much everything, but it was amazing. Really tiny little tips, like 'you only need two dots of this ridiculously expensive product, and then brush down, not up', but she actually talked me through how to use everything, from primer to mascara (never pump the wand into the bottle, you just dry it out so it goes flakey much quicker). I still looked like me afterwards, but just an enhanced version.
I have been a slavish devotee to the brand ever since (Benefit, if anyone else fancies having a go).

Lilyamna · 24/01/2020 01:06

No 7 extra length mascara 👌

BetsyBigNose · 24/01/2020 01:47

I swear by 2000 calorie mascara by Max Factor. 1 coat for day to day wear, 3 coats for a really dramatic, night-time look. Less than a tenner too!

BusterGonad · 24/01/2020 02:06

I wouldn't bother with ELDW if you're not used to make up, it's hard to work with and very drying. I have it and use it for red patches only, never all over as I'd look like I'm 100 years old and flaky.
Eyelash curlers I belibe Shu Uemura are the best.
Foundation really depends on your skin type but if your skin is dry go for one that's illumating, if oily try a matt one. Laura Mercier Candle light glow (something like that) is nice, it's light and goes on my dry skin well. L'oreal True Match is thicker, gives a soft matt look, works well with most skin types, it has a slight shimmer but to be honest it looks good, many many shades so go to a counter with staff that can help. Primers are good but not essential. Get a good skin care regime then you probably won't need a primer.
I like high Street mascara by Rimmel, L'Oréal, Max Factor I hardly ever spend more than £10.

BusterGonad · 24/01/2020 02:07

Sorry, yiu are used to make up BUT I don't think ELDW is for yiu if you don't want a heavy look.

BusterGonad · 24/01/2020 02:08

I'm not sure why you came out yiu twice there! 😂

Grumpasaurus · 24/01/2020 02:19

I agree, ELDW tends to be drying and have a heavier look.

I am loving my Clarins foundation at the moment- added bonus it smells like watermelon and last for ages. I also have a MAC one (watertight?) which is good.

I use Facetheory products for skincare- this has been transformative for me.

Thestrangestthing · 24/01/2020 08:25

@CapnSquirrel where can you buy Charlotte Tilbury? I need to go and try before I buy lol.

angieloumc · 24/01/2020 09:59

Urban Decay Stay Naked foundation is amazing, lots of different shades and with also neutral, cool tone, warm undertones etc.
Mascara again Urban Decay or Benefit is good.
Eyelash curler, best for me is Tweezerman.

readingismycardio · 24/01/2020 10:09

OP, minimum skincare is:
cleanse
Toner
SPF

pm:
Cleanser
Toner
Insert any acids for specific skin problems
Moisturise

Re sun spots: i use both azelaic (the ordinary) and vitamin c (paula's choice)

Hyaluronic is amazing for dry skin- my favourite is paula's choice

readingismycardio · 24/01/2020 10:10

Make-up:
Another vote for UD stay naked
Mascara - guerlain - they have it in waterproof too

userabcname · 24/01/2020 10:12

Rimmel Lasting Radiance is my favourite foundation (used to be called Wake Me Up). It's light and buildable. I also like the Max factor Facefinity powder foundation. I have tried many different foundations, from cheap as chips to much more expensive and these two are my firm favourites.

No 7 do a good mascara called Lash Extender. I also like Benefit Roller Lash.

whatsthebestname · 24/01/2020 10:31

Chanel Les Beiges gets my vote. Great foundation and not too heavy.

ghostyslovesheets · 24/01/2020 10:37

I don't wear make up regularly as I find it cloying on my skin but I recently - thanks to teenage daughter) found the following bits that I really like and feel nice on my skin:

Maybelline (I think) anti age eraser concealer
Maybelline dream satin liquid foundation
Revolution Conceal and Fix mattifying primer
Makeup Obsession Dewy Fix

I'm 50 this year and find a lot of make up sits in my lines! This stuff doesn't and it feels light

ILikeyourHairyHands · 24/01/2020 19:33

I'd go to a Space NK if you've got one near, the consultants aren't tied to any particular brand so will show you a range of products that are best for your needs.

They also have a brilliant loyalty scheme that accrues points pretty quickly.
