To not want to buy blackberries in the supermarket as I think of them as 'free'

When I was a kid we often picked them, they just seemed to be everywhere. I don't see them where I live now, and I do like them, but feel like it's a rip off to buy them, and they always seem expensive. Anyone else? AIBU

Would be like eating mince pies in summer or strawberries and cream in winter!

ColdWinterChild · 23/01/2020 19:44

Totally agree! Luckily I am still working my way through the massive stash in the freezer. Had a really good year round here

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 23/01/2020 19:44

I agree, but it is the wrong time of year for them, so if you want them now, then you will have to pay.

Not if you picked them in the summer and froze them Wink

Cinammoncake · 23/01/2020 19:44

Weirdly I feel like this about stamps

Grin Grin love this

Good point Ponoka7 about my dcs missing out. Love that your dad thought mangoes should be free.

still think ‘how much??’ When I see a tiny punnet of berries or rhubarb selling for £££.
Agree Lordfrontpaw I do actually do the same with rhubarb, seems wrong (and way too expensive) to buy it

It's a fair point about eating seasonally anyway of course. I'm not even sure what fruits are currently seasonal in the UK? Blush

Also, I can't see the poll results myself now Confused so please can someone tell me

Morrisons once labelled them as ‘exotic fruits.’ Grin that's brilliant

Am well jel of those of you who've got them in the freezer. Am going to have to scout the country this autumn and try to find some...

There are thousands round here (obvs in season), but only about 1 in 6 are actually nice. I buy mine (begrudgingly).
Maybe I look upon my childhood as remembering they were nicer than the are in the wild!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/01/2020 19:48

We have loads by us and we grow raspberries. I made raspberry and blackberry sorbet and jam this year.

LaurieMarlow · 23/01/2020 19:49

You have a point in September. And fuck knows why anyone buys them then.

The rest of the year not so much.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 23/01/2020 19:50

Last time I was at my parents, mum made an apple and exotic fruit crumble. The blackberries were labelled Sept 2018. Very delicious, it was too.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 23/01/2020 19:51

I missed the line that said the blackberries came from the depths of their freezer.

rosy71 · 23/01/2020 19:53

I would never buy blackberries. I always think it's really weird seeing them in the supermarket. I w don't buy fruit out of season either.

Rhubarb grows in my parents' garden. We used to have lots of rhubarb pie. I haven't eaten it for years - was never very keen on it. I've never noticed it for sale anywhere but the idea of buying it is strange.

Cinammoncake · 23/01/2020 19:54

That's interesting I'mSOok I do remember them being flavourful and delicious, quite sharp but that was part of the appeal

Buy or don't buy whatever you want, what's unreasonable about it?

spongejack · 23/01/2020 19:57

@Lockheart lighten up, it's just a lighthearted thread really....

It was clear from the title what is was about, so just scroll on by! 🙄

FruityWidow · 23/01/2020 19:58

Theres 4kg in my freezer. Didn't pay a penny for them.

OrangeSamphire · 23/01/2020 20:01

I can’t imagine buying blackberries!

I pick them on every dog walk between early August and the end of September when the hedgerows are packed full of them here. I freeze them and we then have them for another few months. The. The blackberry jam... and then it’s almost blackberry season again 😂

LaurieMarlow · 23/01/2020 20:02

I’d love to have a huge freezer where I can stash kilos of blackberries, but unfortunately I dont.

Embarrassingbodies20 · 23/01/2020 20:03

I never buy them because they're so expensive and they're never fully ripe.

AwdBovril · 23/01/2020 20:04

I completely agrwith the OP. Logically, I know it's silly, especially out of season. In season it would be silly to buy them if you can pick your own though.

GnomeDePlume · 23/01/2020 20:07

Always amazes me when I see people buying blackberries in the supermarket in September. They could go out into the carpark and pick them for free!

Agree that people should be looking at eating far more seasonally. Fewer food miles, lower cost, variety through the year. Plus seasonal fruit and vegetables taste better. The longer the journey the more likely the produce is to have been grown and harvested to survive the journey and look good on the supermarket shelf , not necessarily to taste nice.

We are fortunate to have an allotment so grow a lot. Last year I put a lot more effort into preserving so we have jars and jars of ketchups, sauces, jellies etc.

spongejack · 23/01/2020 20:09

@FruityWidow do they freeze well? What do you use them for after freezing?

GrumpyHoonMain · 23/01/2020 20:11

I feel this way about apples, pears, plums, walnuts, and cherries too as we can pick kilos of the stuff locally.

FruityWidow · 23/01/2020 20:14

@spongejack they turn to mush when you defrost them so they're thrown into jam, compote, crumbles, pies etc. The fresh ones are picked and put straight into whiskey for a few months.

Curiousdad18 · 23/01/2020 20:16

I wouldn't buy them or pick them.

DM used to make us pick them for bloody hours on the our farm.

scrambledeggs01 · 23/01/2020 20:16

Yep I agree so when they are in season I go pick them with the children and freeze them. In fact over Christmas we put some of the frozen blackberries in my gin
