I suffer from anxiety visiting the dentist. I am suffering from severe toothache. I went to dentist yesterday and she said I need my tooth out. She could of taken it out there and then but I said i wanted to be sedated. She understood and said she would refer me to dental hospital. She give me antibiotics for the infection in my gum but they dont seem to be working.. I'm in agony. I'm taking solpadine and ibroprohen but I'm worried I'm going to take too much. I cant stand the pain. What can I do for the pain?

If you can visit a pharmacy in the morning, (or phone ahead), and ask if they have Anbesol in stock, that might offer some relief. It's lidocaine (local anaesthetic), and it's available in either liquid, (apply with a cotton bud) or a bonjella type tube.

Clove oil

Anbesol is superb.

Once this is over though - your dentist anxiety has caused you days of excruciating pain that's completely unnecessary. You should probably do something about that. Your GP may be able to signpost you to services that can advise, counsel, CBT etc.

Firstly, painkillers won’t work if you have an infection.
Clove oil is foul, but works, as does anbesol (not to be confused with anusol)
Try a hot water bottle/cool compress on that side of the face/neck, whichever helps, one should.
Also, salt water rinse to help clear infection.

If you have an infection the dentist should have organised an urgent referral.
Ibuprofen will help swelling, not on an empty stomach and never more than prescribed.

Good luck!!

Tooth pain is the worse! Given the pain you are in could you reconsider your dentist removing it without sedation? I recently had a wisdom tooth removed with just the local anaesthetic and I honestly didn't feel a thing and the relief was instant - it's weighing up which of the two (anxiety vs pain) is the most unbearable. I found co-codimol was the only thing that helped relieve the pain. Good luck.

I know you right feliciabirthgiver. I'm thinking that way as I'm in agony now. I need to stop being a baby!!

Well the swelling got worse and I've had to have an abscess drained today. Dentist has give me another course of antibiotics. She cant take tooth out until infection is gone as the anesthetic wont work. I'm so fed upHmm.
