To not want to join the WI?

LemonMousse · 22/01/2020 23:34

It's not that I don't want to join the local WI - it's just that the chair shares shite stuff on Facebook that annoys me.
I know her from village events - she seems nice enough in RL but she added me on Facebook a few months ago and her posts are so right wing.
I mean Islamphobic, Big Ben should bong for Brexit, hates Megan 'taking Harry away', climate change is a load of bollocks, vegans are the spawn of the devil (you get the idea)
I actually feel quite sad that she keeps telling me to join and I'd like to but I can't bring myself to because of this!
In RL she's actually very nice. Friendly, kind, does a lot for our village. But...

Well, block her on Facebook - or whatever it is you do on Facebook, I wouldn't have a clue, can't see the attraction of it. And if you'd like to join the WI - again, I can't see the attraction - just do it. As you say, she's pleasant enough and her views are probably not unusual in village life.
If you're vegan, just bring your own snacks. And make your own jam.

I'd be contacting the head office or whatever and reporting those posts. The WI have a constitution and I bet those posts go against it.

It makes me angry that more organisations don't have proper social media guidelines for their groups.

NotMeNoNo · 22/01/2020 23:43

Join another WI, there's no obligation to go to the local one. Is she sharing this stuff under the WI page/news?

BillHadersNewWife · 22/01/2020 23:45

Actually I've just checked and their constitution mentions nothing in their communication section. On their social media guidelines it only talks about asking permission before sharing photos of members.

SO shortsighted. I had to help an artists' shared work-space recently as some of the artists were sharing content which didn't match the gallery's image.

I came up with a set of guidelines for artists to illustrate clearly what was ok to share and what wasn't. People are spectacularly stupid about things like this.

Maybe I should contact the WI and have a chat!

BillHadersNewWife · 22/01/2020 23:46

Not I suppose OP wants to join the one in her own community. That makes sense...it's how people forge friendships locally. No use if the next one is 5 miles away is it!

YummyChipCurryDip · 22/01/2020 23:48

I've been to 3 WI meetings in my village - spread over the 40 years I've lived here. So I've tried. I just don't share much in common with enough of them to make it attractive. Mind you, I've been welcomed 3 times as a 'newcomer to the village' I've lived here longer than any of them. It's a ribbon development with no pavements so you rarely bump into anyone and the people I have befriended don't do WI. It's not for everybody.

Nanny0gg · 22/01/2020 23:56

If they're her personal posts she can post what she likes. The WI is a voluntary organisation, it has no control over its members except when they are operating under the WI banner.

The WI is not for everyone, although there are so many different WIs now that certainly if you're in a big town or city you can pretty much find one that suits you.

But it's not obligatory to join. It has absolutely enhanced my life and I have met many women I wouldn't have met without it and made some very good friends. But if you don't like it/it doesn't interest you then don't worry about it.

BackforGood · 23/01/2020 00:02

What NannyOgg said - I read it that this lady is posting things on her own personal FB Feed that the OP doesn't like.
Simple answer - unfriend her on FB

Then, completely separately, if you want to join the WI then do so. If you don't, then don't.
If she starts saying things that you think are offensive face to face, then challenge her.
If she says things from the Chair / when representing the WI, then ask if that is the view of the WI, and take it from there.

However, what an individual posts on their feed is not connected to if you would like WI or not.

PickAChew · 23/01/2020 00:05

I think my mum might have given up trying to persuade me to join.

Stefoscope · 23/01/2020 00:19

Meh, I wouldn't automatically assume one person speaks for the other's POV and cut my nose off to spite my face. The WI is not a particularly political endeavour from my limited experience of it in rural North Yorkshire. It's more geared towards activities such as fundraising fundraising towards organisations like Macmillans and helping widowers feel less isolated.

NotMeNoNo · 23/01/2020 22:14

BillHadersNewWife, I thought the OP was saying she might join the local WI if it were not for the President who she doesn't get on with. It's great to be part of a community group if it's the right group for you. I was a WI secretary in our village, it was a real icebreaker for residents but we also had quite a few members from further afield who liked our style and programme.

LemonMousse · 23/01/2020 22:22

Thanks everyone. I'm being ridiculous aren't I?
If she turns out to be as bad in RL I don't have to go back Smile
