to be really upset about SW?

St0pTryingT0MakeFetchHappen · 22/01/2020 20:13

Total first world problem, but I've been really consistent with my diet and have followed SW religiously. Yet, tonight I have haulled arse to the group, with my screaming 10 week old, and have put on 1.5lbs. I'm really pissed off, I hate my post-partum body. I've been out walking and as active as possible with a baby strapped to me for most of every day. I've been really "good", and I've still gained weight.

AIBU to ditch SW?

as someone losing weight, i failed on SW but now on keto and have lost a stone. and i dont have to pay per week to do it either

measles64 · 22/01/2020 21:19

Way too much carb in the way of pasta. The only way I lost weight was to follow healthy eating and keep the carbs down. Walked miles with babies and toddlers so was very fit. Muscle is denser than fat so your clothes may well be feeling looser.

RozHuntleysStump · 22/01/2020 21:19

Low carb is the way!

BringOnTheBotox · 22/01/2020 21:20

I lost a lot of weight on SW and have kept it off for years as it made me totally re-educate myself on eating and I overhauled my eating habits for good.

With that being said though, I am convinced that not every diet suits every person; for example I know someone who lost loads of weight with Weight Watchers and has kept it off for years, but I also know someone who did Weight Watchers religiously for 6 weeks and didn't lose a pound.

Also as others have said, if you're BF then it will be harder to lose any excess weight as the body holds onto fat stores.

St0pTryingT0MakeFetchHappen · 22/01/2020 21:23

@MumW we go to baby yoga! Love it

TryingToBeBold · 22/01/2020 21:25

Eat less, move more.
But your need to sustain yourself because you are BF
Spend that weekly SW money on an exercise class. Clubbercise is normally £5 a class

pastabest · 22/01/2020 21:28

How much do you think each boob weighs at the moment? More than they did pre-pregnancy by any chance?

Try and remember your body is feeding a whole other person. You can't be a skinny no sugar latte at the moment you need to be a indulgent hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows.

Annebronte · 22/01/2020 21:29

If your clothes feel looser, that is a much better indicator than your weight, which will fluctuate. Just keep walking and eat reasonably healthily. SW just sounds demoralising!

beelzeboob · 22/01/2020 21:30

Op you’re putting to much emphasis on weight rather than fat.
You want FAT loss. You said your clothes feel looser - this means you’ve likely lost fat.

There’s a whole load of reasons you weigh 1.5lb more - you had boobs full of milk? You had a big cup of tea? You hadn’t had a poo yet?

The best measuring stick is how you look and how your clothes feel, not how much you weigh

St0pTryingT0MakeFetchHappen · 22/01/2020 21:36

@pastabest I did consider weighing them like Rachel in Green Wing...

@TryingToBeBold I'm looking for classes where I can wear the baby - have signed up for one. Baby has firm opinions about never being put down!

10 weeks pp? I’m still trying to lose the baby weight from 3rd (and last) dc. He will be 18 next week!

Aria999 · 22/01/2020 21:48

Surprised pp are saying it's hard to lose weight while bf, for me the opposite. I had put it down to pumping ~500 of my calories/ day into another person... just shows everyone's body is different.

I never had much luck with organised diets except for weight watchers before they changed the points system. Weight watchers is really just heavily disguised calorie counting though. (The previous system also limited saturated fats).

As other pp have said, give yourself a bit of time, try to eat healthily and be active, if you need snacks to get you through bf then try and have nuts or fruit instead of cakes and chocolate. I drank a lot of semi skimmed milk to help with bf munchies.

Good luck above all be nice to yourself. This too will pass.

ChicCroissant · 22/01/2020 21:49

If that was the first/second week you've been then I do think YABU to expect a big weight loss at this stage of life with a newborn. Is that kind of reaction (deciding to leave) typical for you, because not all weeks are going to be a weight loss no matter what plan you follow. It's not a realistic image to have of weight loss, it will vary especially at this stage of life.

I've got a friend who does this, sings the praises of whatever plan is doing well but the first week when there is no weight loss it's all drama-wailing about failure and quitting when it's just one week and things are going well in the long-term. But she's so focused on the short-term that she loses sight of the overall goal and what she's achieved already. Now that might not be you, I hope it isn't - but the instant quitting rings a bell! Be kind to yourself and enjoy your newborn.

FVFrog · 22/01/2020 21:54

Goodness, please give yourself a break @St0pTryingT0MakeFetchHappen! As others have said you are very newly postpartum and breastfeeding and caring for a very young baby. It sounds as if exercise was important to you before pregnancy so I would focus your energies in getting out for walks, eating healthy and if you’ve been cleared for exercise at your 6 week check, find a post natal Pilates class or similar. I totally understand wanting to feel more like yourself and get back some control over your body but you really need good balanced nutrition. But honestly if my boobs were anything to go by they would easily have weighed several pounds each! And if you’re clothes are looser you’re probably losing fat anyway. Step away from the scales!

Nuttyaboutnutella · 22/01/2020 21:55

Jesus wept, can posters not suggest or advocate a keto or low carb diet to a woman who's 10 weeks post partum and breastfeeding. FFS!

Birdshitbridgegotme · 22/01/2020 21:59

It might sound silly but maybe u have gained muscle and that's why you're heavier but your clothes are looser. muscle weighs more but is smaller than fat. also sometimes weight loss shows the week after. I'm currently doing ww and last week I was at the gym almost every day and only lost half a lb. But this week i lost 4lb so just goes to show. My leader also says 10 days is more when you will see what you're losing. But cause we weigh every 7 u shouldn't expect massive amounts

St0pTryingT0MakeFetchHappen · 22/01/2020 22:00

@ChicCroissant week 1 lost 4lbs, week 2 lost 3.5lbs, week 3 gained 1.5lbs. All following A W to the letter. Did WW post DS1 and lost all baby weight over ~ 4 months. pre-pregnancy I was doing 1/2 marathons. Not a quitter but felt v upset to have put in the work and have it fail this early. Especially since going for v long runs/lifting big weights are out at the moment. I read on here that the most of weight loss is diet; just felt cheated that diet stopped working!

"SW to the letter" even.

You've just given birth. Your body took 9 months to grow your baby, it will take a similar time to recover from pregnancy and child birth.

Please don't actively diet whilst recovering from giving birth and breast feeding. Aim for a healthy balanced diet, not too high in sugar or fat. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and get outdoors as regularly as possible to take your baby for a walk. Daily if possible. I'm sure you will start to see good results without the stress if dieting and measuring every lb on and off.

ChicCroissant · 22/01/2020 22:09

It hasn't stopped or failed though, it's just one week. Especially when you are post-partum, that's a bit of a worrying attitude. Two out of three weeks have been successful.

Elle7rose · 22/01/2020 22:11

It's likely to be, one of:

  1. Fluid retention (very likely given that your hormones will be in flux)
  • Even when not pregnant my weight can be 3lbs heavier at the end of the day that at the start, 3lbs heavier during ovulation (regardless of the time of day) and 5lbs heavier during PMS because of fluid retention. I also find that I consistently weigh 2-3lbs heavier the morning after eating pasta for dinner and it miraculously disappears half way through the day, which again is fluid retention.
Breastfeeding probably causes fluid retention. Also bear in mind that if you drink immediately before weigh-in then that makes a difference to your weight (hop on the home bathroom-scales before and after drinking and you'll find this!)
  1. Too many calories from 'Free Foods' (e.g. fruit)
  1. The weight of your clothes- no joke- this makes a huge difference

Just keep going with it because it will drop off over time.

AwesomeMixTapeVol1 · 22/01/2020 22:11

You said your clothes are looser. Who cares about the numbers if you feel better and things fit better. You're doing great and if you eat good stuff and move some then you're going to be fine. As far as I recall when my LO was 10 weeks old I was walking a lot but also inhaling tea and crisps!

littlejalapeno · 22/01/2020 22:16

10 weeks! Please give yourself a break. You will slim down but it will take time and right now shouldn’t be a priority. Ignore all the celebrities who snap back, it’s all photoshop and their careers depend on it. Breastfeeding can make you feel really emotional so when you say your disappointed in how you currently look please factor that in. Also your clothes will be looser because you are slimming down physically and gaining muscle from lifting and carrying your baby and as your body naturally readjusts post birth. Please give it time to do this- Don’t rush it! And Please nourish yourself, as they say to feed the baby you must feed the mum.

IdblowJonSnow · 22/01/2020 22:22

10 weeks is a bit early? Your body is still settling down.
SW is odd. I've done it twice successfully. Last time I went nothing happened.
But why not stick with it for a few more weeks and see what happens.
