Some worthless lowlife piece if shit has opened a Next Storecard in my name and of course spent up the limit at the same time.
First I know about it is today when the credit agreement arrives in the post.
Apparently all you need is a name, address and DOB to open a Next card - BUT you don't need any form of ID to prove it.

Would it be too much for Next to ask for a driving licence or a utility bill in order to confirm that the applicant is who they say they are, rather than just an evil lying thieving toerag?

Thats terrifying. Have you contacted them? They should really do a proper check like you say.

MissPoldark · 22/01/2020 16:21

But surely you have to give bank details and how would they have those?

Deelish75 · 22/01/2020 16:22

Where was the scorecard posted too? Or did they (lowlife scum) collect from a store?

Aworldofmyown · 22/01/2020 16:22

They usually insist on items being delivered to the house, that way they can make sure its the person who opened the account. Where were the goods sent??

They should surely set the card up first and verify the details before allowing it to be used too? Barmy if not!

PegasusReturns · 22/01/2020 16:25

I’ve always found Next’s approach to ID verification pretty rigorous. Sometimes frustratingly so

Aworldofmyown · 22/01/2020 16:27

You can't have a Next store card until you've used the online site for a period of time.

Ilikewinter · 22/01/2020 16:27

I feel your anger, I had 3 JD Williams accounts taken out in my name, all 3 had a different date of birth - all wrong, and they used my maiden name. We moved house and nearly 2 years later i got a letter from debt collectors (sent to my current address) demanding payment. I had to prove the date i moved house and eventually it was all written off. I got the impression its really common.

potter5 · 22/01/2020 16:27

OP is correct. I recently opened a Next account and didn't need to give much information. They do however send you a 'Next' card to use in store. Or you can shop online and collect from store which presumably is what the thieves did?

Is the money being refunded and the account being closed?

Undies1990 · 22/01/2020 16:27

What do Next have to say about the situation?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 22/01/2020 16:30

Nobody does, though. I've had someone open credit cards & catalogue accounts in my name, if they've got your personal info, it's all they need. It's a complete pain in the arse.

Cuddling57 · 22/01/2020 16:34

When you collect from next I've always been asked for ID. Maybe an insider job?

MintyMabel · 22/01/2020 16:41

I rarely shop in there but whenever I do they ask me if I want a card.

jomaIone · 22/01/2020 16:47

Is it a next store card or just an online account?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 22/01/2020 16:47

Yes I've spoken to Next and I've also created a police (action fraud) case.
The very helpful woman in the Next fraud team confirmed that no documentation was required or provided to open the account. Name, address and DOB is just needed for the credit card check.
I will not be out of pocket as it's fraud - and it's clearly commonplace within their organisation.
The credit limit on the card was £1500 - and Next confirmed it had been more or less maxed out immediately.

grandmasterstitch · 22/01/2020 16:49

I've never had to prove who I am when picking up in store. They ask for my surname and postcode and that's it

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 22/01/2020 16:51

I know you don't need ID to pick up from store, just to confirm the address on the account which the theives will know.

I once set up several accounts to take advantage of an offer, using friends/families addresses (with their permission) and Next didn't give a scoobies .

Thinkingabout1t · 22/01/2020 16:55

That puts me off shopping at Next. Presumably they raise their prices to cover the huge losses they must suffer from fraud, through their own fault.

sam221 · 22/01/2020 16:55

If this is a common occurance and no real ID is needed, I would say that Next is participante in the fraud. As they are allowing poor fraudulent practises knowingly boosting their sales figures. While a Bank is left out of pocket and a end victim who then has the hassle of notifying various credit agencies/banks of the fraud in their name.
Seriously disgusting business model and should be reported I guess to the FSA(I think).
What kind stupid company allows this type of piss poor account opening practises?

JeffreysWorkTrousers · 22/01/2020 16:58

In my local Next store you categorically have to show ID, I use my driving licence but my son can use his student ID (he's 16) as it has his photo on it and his surname matches mine.

Next told me they also accept bank cards as proof of who you are when you are collecting from store, hence why my teenage son can collect.

It is lax of any store not to ask for some form of ID for collection. Even worse that you can set up an account without needing ID of any kind.

No they dont , you can elect to have items delivered to store

pelirocco123 · 22/01/2020 17:03

maggiecate · 22/01/2020 17:05

The more difficult they make it for people to apply for cards the fewer they will get signed up - a certain amount will be built into each transaction for fraud, the same was as a certain amount is budgeted for shoplifting. It’s all added into the prices we pay in store in the end.
The stuff they ordered will no doubt be appearing on eBay as BNWT and someone will score themselves a bargain and either not be aware or not care how it ended up there.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 22/01/2020 17:07

I've just looked at the Next website and cut and pasted the following.

Once you have filled in the simple application, they will give an instant decision on whether you have passed the credit check or not. Good news if you have as you then get to shop straight away, and won't have to pay anything until you receive your first monthly statement.

In other words you don't even have to collect - you can use your newly opened account to pay for goods then and there in the shop.
