AIBU Sick Leave

Hi All,

Sorry if there have been recent similar threads. I just don’t know whether to take the afternoon off. I have a virus - bit worse than a cold, my eyes are all horrible and mucousy, I have a headache, feel generally under the weather and have a sore throat and blocked up. Thing is I work from home and don’t want to take the time off. But all morning I’ve been feeling very unproductive, tired and haven’t been able to get much done. It was the same yesterday. Just not sure if I’d BU by taking the afternoon off as I don’t feel bad enough to need to lie in bed (although I’d probably just lie down anyway and watch a film or something). Plus my eyes are hurting and staring at my laptop screen isn’t helping. Has anyone got any advice? Thanks

You’re sick. How would you be unreasonable to take sick leave to recover?

Take the day off, and tomorrow if necessary. There's no point trying to work if you're not productive. I've worked at home in the past when I've been unwell, but even I have to say at times I need to listen to my body and give in to it. At most I've logged on for a skype meeting and then logged straight off again and returned to bed - even when I did that colleagues weren't expecting me.

Thanks all. I just find it difficult to know if it’s okay when I’m not ill enough to be asleep in bed. Anyway, now I’m in bed getting some rest so thanks.

I think you should take the time off, but often find it hard to myself, having been self employed.

There's a reason workers before you fought hard to ensure we had the right to take sick leave! Of course it's entirely reasonable to give yourself time to recover from illness.

If you get it paid take it. I don’t and have struggled into work and it’s taking ages to shift as a result. But no sick pay and I can’t afford to not have the money. Area manager has got arsey about me being there - and was told what so you expect if you don’t pay sick pay? Min wage job.

You don't have to be bed bound to take time off sick....
