To buy a new matress?

I have a bad back that I take very strong painkillers for. If I do too much in one day it can result in a trip to a&e. My back has been getting worse and worse over the last 6 months, leaving me unable to move on some days and taking more medication than I'd like.

I've noticed that if I'm able to sleep the whole night on my side, then my back isn't anywhere near as bad. But I have a condition that makes my hip dislocate easily, so sleeping on my side isn't ideal.

I figure that if sleeping on my side is better for my back than sleeping on my back, the mattress must need replacing. DH thinks I should just be sleeping on my side.

AIBU to want to buy a new mattress anyway? The one we have is 4 yrs old and there are visible dips in the place I sleep. It cost £600 and is supposed to last 7 yrs. but I'm disabled and do spend longer in bed than the average person. Didn't want to drop feed that!!

Turn the mattress.

Sorry, should have said, we've been turning the mattress religiously every 6 months. I got DH to turn and rotate as well to see if I can sleep on a bit of the mattress I've not tried before, but I've had all the sides now. I'm still in lots of pain either way round.

You could buy a decent mattress topper instead.

whatnow40 · 22/01/2020 10:42

I thought about a mattress topper but we struggle with sheets at the moment. Our current mattress is really deep and we have to buy the extra deep fitted sheets. If we got a mattress topper then we'd have to get all new sheets again in an even deeper size. I think?

Not necessarily. You could just get a single topper for your side.

That's a good idea, I might try that.
