Liz Kershaw on Twitter

twitter.com/lizkershawdj/status/1219321284405944320?s=21

I am genuinely outraged. "My Grandmother boiled rags".... ergo, how can any women/girls be in 'period poverty now".

For fucks sake. The fact that there really are educated women In privileged positions spouting this crap is almost as fucking sad as the situation itself.

I don't want to sit and listen whilst women in the public eye do more harm than good.

I thought it was February the overdraft thing?

But yes, of course period poverty is a thing! If you have heavy periods it can also be the cost of medicine (especially if you pay prescription charges), extra laundry or even missing work.

@jimmyhill

I dont listen to R1 but YANBU at all.

Liz Kershaw hasn't been on Radio 1 since 1992, Rip Van Winkle*

Oops! Should have read the OP.properly.Grin

Freyanna · 21/01/2020 23:22

I think she is a silly fool.

My periods started when I was 12, I was living alone with my dad who thought periods were disgusting.

I had no female relatives to call on and was so embarrassed to be having periods.

I made pads from towels and they did leak.

I don't want another girl to go through what I did.

ThisIsSharonVanEtten · 21/01/2020 23:25

As Freyana said I’d want no other girl to go through what I went through. Liz kershaw should be ashamed of herself. Angry

bd67thSaysReinstateLangCleg · 21/01/2020 23:30

Women boiled rags. They also didn't work outside the home the way we do now. What do you do with a blood-soaked rag when you have to change your sanpro in the middle of the work day? Or the school day?

Clevererthanyou · 21/01/2020 23:37

Freyanna - I feel for you, really. I started at 15 and my mum spent the child benefit in fags and vodka so I used sport socks that I had to hand wash with soap (no washing machine) and that was 2004. That shit stays with you but oh sanitary protection is so inexpensive what’s the big deal ...

DollyDoneMore · 21/01/2020 23:48

The Katy Hopkins of music radio. Awful woman.

Freyanna · 21/01/2020 23:54

Clevererthanyou I feel for you too.

This is the bit Liz Kershaw isn't getting, where are children supposed to access sanitary protectionif there parent/guardian wont get it for them?

I had no money.

I can still remember the shame of a classmate pointing out my period had started, but I was using a rag at the time.

HeIenaDove · 22/01/2020 01:49

Is she single? Just curious as Laurence Fox wont date young "woke" women under 35.

Come on Cupid get busy in time for Valentines Day.

Cryingoverspilttea · 22/01/2020 02:23

Really, no one gets that her dismay is that girls are still in this situation, two generations later?? Not in any way that the girls are to blame.

Learn to fucking read, OP. Honestly.

bd67thSaysReinstateLangCleg · 22/01/2020 02:31

where are children girls supposed to access sanitary protection if there parent/guardian wont get it for them?

This. That's why Red Box and similar in schools are important.

Pardonwhat · 22/01/2020 07:35

Cryingoverspilttea

What? I think you might need to ‘learn to fucking read’ Grin

cologne4711 · 22/01/2020 08:05

Just been on Twitter to comment. Quite stunned by some of the replies too - oh they're just buying too many fags so can't buy tampax for their daughters. Sigh.

BrainFart · 22/01/2020 08:44

Sad thing is, if men had periods, we wouldn't be having this debate, because sanitary protection would have been free for years already.

As a man I don't agree with this, but also recognise I don't understand the issue for women beyond the most obvious points. Is there a movement / parliamentary bill to make female sanitary products available for free on the NHS ? What is the estimated cost ? I would guess that there must be 10-15 million women in the UK using them every month...

Palegreenstars · 22/01/2020 08:52

I don’t really understand why she’s on R6. Her show is appalling and the way she talks to people who call in is so cringe.

She just wants more followers like Lawrence Fox though - I doubt she cares about this issue either way.

RevIMJolly · 22/01/2020 09:03

Wasn’t she accused of sexually harassing someone and leaving abusive messages for a man who later took his own life?

She sounds delightful.

I think she was officially cleared but maybe that’s why the BBC can’t get rid?

bbcessex · 22/01/2020 09:05

I think you mean 'learn to interpret', @Cryingoverspilttea .. and I have interpreted her meaning perfectly.

Are you part of her PR team, now trying to pretend she meant otherwise?

OP posts:
PuppyClub · 22/01/2020 09:25

I actually use rags and fluffy socks as it's better for the environment, and I just chuck them in the washing machine (yes I know I'm "lucky" to have a washing machine).

However, I do think sometimes people can plead poverty whilst making non cost effective food choices and smoking.

Wingedserpentfliesbynight · 22/01/2020 09:28

On subjects like these I don’t listen to randoms one the radio, I listen to the people in charities who are dealing with the issue and tend to believe them.
Just because I don’t experience period op worry doesn’t mean that someone else doesn’t.
Boiling rags, honestly. What is she on about.

kierenthecommunity · 22/01/2020 09:34

She’s got form for being a bit of a cunt hasn’t she? I’m sure she’s been known for saying similar crap before.

Who the hell is Nick Pye? Love this gem

‘By being a proper woman!’

Always great to hear a man telling women how to conduct themselves 🙄

OhMsBeliever · 22/01/2020 09:40

I got through about 3 packets of pads during my period. I've never been able to use tampons. Bodyform are the only ones that don't irritate me. Not everywhere stocks the heavy flow packets, so I usually have to go to town to get them. I also buy the rapid relief ibuprofen lysine. If I'm lucky Wilkinson's will have it in stock for around £1.50, otherwise it's over £3 elsewhere.

I don't smoke, rarely drink, don't have make up etc etc. I'd struggle if I had teenage girls for sure (all mine are boys)

I had a parent who prioritised cigarettes over everything, so I'm sure there are parents out there that do that. It's awful. I had to use tissues a few times as a teenager, or ask the school nurse back then for pad, she always had a supply in her room. Do schools actually have nurses still?

Haworthia · 22/01/2020 09:52

@PuppyClub You know you can buy washable pads? I’ve used them for 15+ years and they’re a lot more secure (you can buy them with poppers that hold the wings in place) than socks I’m sure Smile

IntermittentParps · 22/01/2020 09:53

Liz Kershaw has always been a cunt. I love 6Music but they have a serious blind spot about her; apart from her dinosaur views, she's a shite DJ. I don't know why they keep her on.

Camomila · 22/01/2020 09:53

I think some big secondarys still do - DBro was thinking of applying to be one at a local school (private though)
