To ask if weekend cleaning business is worth it?

I'm really skint, no money at all and I can't do anything Monday-Friday while DS is in nursery, with transport and the time it takes to get back is just not worth it. I've wanted to start this business for a long time. But I have to wait until DS is in school, AIBU to start the cleaning business slowly at the weekends when DS is with his dad and do it full time when he starts school in September? Part of me thinks it won't work as everyone has their cleaning done during the week?

nothing to lose!

forestdweller11 · 21/01/2020 20:41

If you target holiday lets, airnbs etc could work.

TrickyKid · 21/01/2020 20:46

Definitely worth trying. PLI is only about £60 a year so you've not really got anything to lose if it doesn't take off. People always seem to be looking for cleaners.

KenDoddsDogsDadsDead · 21/01/2020 20:51

If you target holiday lets, airnbs etc could work.

Maybe also small offices that are empty at weekends. If you're somewhere like London there are people who stay in a flat during the week and decamp at the weekend; they might well like someone to clean it when they're not there.

Cuddling57 · 21/01/2020 21:00

Sounds like a great idea.
If it's your own business will you need public liability insurance? Complete a self assessment tax return, pay ni etc?

Lionsleepstonight · 21/01/2020 21:01

Id love it. I have a couple of dogs who i couldnt trust with a cleaner if i was out at work when she came. Id love it if a cleaner came while i was out walking them.

Whynosnowyet · 21/01/2020 21:02

Are you near a marina op? Cleaner here and I clean boats!!.

lalafafa · 21/01/2020 21:03

I think you'd do a roaring trade Sunday morning after parties.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 21/01/2020 21:05

It's a good idea to get you started. There are lots of people who work shifts or prefer to be at home when a cleaner is there. Also you could offer dog walking and cat feeding or just 'pop ins' for when folks are out all day or away at the weekend. These are all things that I use.
Good luck.

youwouldthink · 21/01/2020 21:06

Also small offices that are closed over the weekend. We have cleaners come in either Saturday or Sunday each week whenever works for them. It's two sisters and I think they have three or four offices by ours

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/01/2020 21:09

I'd love a Sunday afternoon cleaner. We usually go out for a nice walk after lunch and it would be marvellous to come back to a clean home ready for the week ahead.

Especially if you did bed sheet changing too.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/01/2020 21:11

Alternatively, could you become a chamber maid in a local hotel Saturdays and Sundays (they'd be crying out for people to volunteer the weekends)? It's regular income and would act as a great reference for setting up an in home cleaning service come September.

PhoebeMayfair · 21/01/2020 21:14

Thanks for replying. I'm going to put an ad up on gumtree/Facebook and I'll take it from there.

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz any chance you're in North/East London? 🤣

Ah man if only you hadn't put London on the end (we are NE).

Northernsoullover · 21/01/2020 21:17

Offer your services for domestic cleaning on weekends too. Some of my clients prefer to be home when I clean. I have a few elderly clients who would be happy if I worked weekends.

PhonicTheHedgehog · 21/01/2020 21:20

I know someone who would be interested. They like their flat cleaned on a Sunday. They can’t be the only ones.

Secondsop · 21/01/2020 21:22

Go for it! I actually love the idea of Sunday afternoon/evening help - to clean, get the house ready for the upcoming week, get all the school uniforms washed and ready, water bottles washed for school, fridge cull performed, beds changed... we could then relax or go out for a meal during it. And places that have Monday bin collections might be crying out for a Sunday cleaner who will do the bins as well.

Somebodystired · 21/01/2020 21:22

I'd love a weekend cleaner, someone to either come in Saturday morning so it's all clean for the weekend, or a Sunday so it's all clean for the week ahead!

Whynosnowyet · 21/01/2020 21:27

Look on air B&B and message some hosts. I clean for 2 hosts..
Great money!

PhoebeMayfair · 21/01/2020 21:39

Gosh this gives me hope! I genuinely thought people would be home at weekends and wouldn't like to have a cleaner in the house.

@Whynosnowyet how did you clean for hostels? Where do you find them? I've never really thought about cleaning for office/ holiday lets as I assumed they would just use a bigger company?

OP posts:
Wynston · 21/01/2020 22:03

I turn down Saturday changover cleans nearly every week.....there is a high demand for cleaners to clean holiday lets.
You could approach the people that manage the properties.

PineappleDanish · 21/01/2020 22:07

I can see how it would work for holiday lets or offices.

But I want my cleaning done at home when the house is empty, not at weekends.

Whynosnowyet · 22/01/2020 10:28

I clean 2 boats for air B&B.. And a 10 bedroom B&B where I live as well as quite a few houses during the week!! Get an ad on Care.com with a profile. People can message you or you them. There is a free option or a £10 a month option. I have had jobs off both options. Week ends can be busy if I choose!
Get onto it op. Gumtree also @£5 an ad for your services!!

Smallinthesmoke · 22/01/2020 10:35

My cleaner comes on a Saturday. It's not unheard of.
Try it Smile

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 22/01/2020 10:38

I'd have no problems with someone coming to clean my home at the weekend! I dont get out much due to disability, so the chosen day makes no difference for me. I think it's a great idea, OP.
