Car seats on holiday

We're off on holiday with a 6month old and a 4 year old.
Wondering what best plan is for car seats. To rent or to take ours. Seems like a lot of money for something that might be dodgy but also dont want to risk our good ones in the plane hold..
What do you do?

When DS was a baby we took his infant seat and wrapped it up very carefully in bubble wrap and a cardboard box marked fragile.

Now DS is older we have a seat which is specifically for travelling (a Britax Two Way Elite, 9-25kg so lasts a long time, and it's reasonably light and compact) and take it in a padded car seat bag with backpack straps.

I think there are some travel booster seats which are suitable for 4 year olds...

With our children (4 and 7) we use a booster seat without a back ( it fits in our hand luggage)

  • when they were younger like the 6 month old we took our own car seat wrapped up and sealed in a black plastic bag.

Take them with you. Have bin liners, bubble wrap and tape at the ready. (Put the tape in the hike, not your hand luggage.)

Hold (not hike) Blush

welshweasel · 21/01/2020 20:34

I’d take them with you. I’ve seen some really horrific car seats being handed out with hire cars. At the very least I’d take an infant carrier for the youngest (if you don’t want to risk yours getting damaged you could buy a joie juva for £40) and a bubblebum or similar for the 4 year old.

We take a cheap car seat (they are put in the hold for free), we have more expensive ones for home but the cheap new one is far superior to the car rental companies cheap, old and battered ones (we've seen some that are truly awful)

Hollie089 · 21/01/2020 20:37

Oh, and for the 4 year old a Nania Befix SP is perfect, £35 and well rated for safety by Which!

SmallPinkBear · 21/01/2020 20:38

I would get a trunki booster for the 4 year old and take the babies car seat

Comeonbabyyay · 21/01/2020 20:39

We rented and it was so bad that we bought one just for the holidays
I did complain to the rental company and they paid for the seat I bought though

It was a piece of crAp

I have two fairly light but good quality high back boosters that I use on holiday or if I need to get taxi's. They go in the hold when flying. I wouldn't put my kids in anything less in this country so don't compromise abroad. It is a bit of a ball ache but I wouldn't forgive myself if anything happened and I had compromised on car seats because of the faff.

Thanks. I think I'll buy some to take. Not worth the risk.
Thanks for the recommendations! Ill look into all of those.

Will get bubble wrapped up.
