To take my business elsewhere when Co-OP allow charities to harass you at the door?

I wouldn't mind so much if they were outside the shop but they're set up by the door and you can't leave without walking past them and being asked to stop and presumably give money. I didn't go elsewhere but I was tempted to. I generally like co-OP, they support fair trade and community projects through their reward system but this annoys me, its like we're sitting ducks waiting to be pounced on.

My local Tesco Express does this as well. I hate it. I no longer shop in W H Smith because of it. Going shopping in the city centre is an obstacle course of avoiding chuggers, beggars, Sky reps, charities in shop doorways. It's deeply unpleasant. And they wonder why the High Street is dying?

If you want to go somewhere else then go somewhere else.

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 21/01/2020 18:28

They aren't going to stop on account of one or two customers objecting to collectors harrassment, because it's for "a good cause" Hmm. Fwiw I agree with you, but not everyone will publicly agree in fear of being shamed for being unsympathetic.

Just vote with your feet, OP.

Go wherever you want, they won't care!

Also have this at our local Co-Op but I’m a bit of a softy! I ended up signing up to a ‘Save The Animals’ monthly draw. Hmm Came to my senses and cancelled the direct debit and had almost daily calls from them trying to change my mind. Just go elsewhere now! Grin

If it makes any difference it's a fairly small, quiet Co-OP. I think there was two staff there, me and one other customer and the two guys in suits at the door. It would have felt less intimidating if it was a busy Saturday at a big supermarket with lots of people rushing in and out. It also makes me wonder how cost effective it is for the charity to employ two people in this role in a place which doesn't get much foot fall.

Shop where you want for whatever reason you want, why exactly do you think that's unreasonable?

Quizeerascal · 21/01/2020 19:09

The 'take my business elsewhere' was a little tongue in cheekGrin I just wanted to see if it bothered other people too or if I was being a bit grumpy Wink

Or, you know, walk straight past the chuggers with a 'no thanks'. It's hardly complicated, there's no barrier and checkpoint system.

If that makes you feel guilty, that's on you - you should work out why and sort it out.

I don't think YABU and I don't see the harm in emailing them saying it puts you off. Sure, it probably won't do anything but it might, so why not.
