Just witnessed on Twitter, a man made a “joke” comment to a footballer about the death of his wife.

People are now posting the mans business, hence many new 1 star google and Facebook reviews and posting his phone number. Saying they should smash his warehouse up, posting his photo and insulting his looks etc

I obviously don’t agree with any joke like it and definitely do not find it funny. I also don’t agree with mob mentality ... and I think sometimes the mob become the very thing they are abusing the other person for.

How would you feel it it was you whose spouse had died and someone made fun?

Highonpotandused · 21/01/2020 17:05

"Karma" is not a thing. This sounds like revenge / vigilantism.

GenderfreeJoe · 21/01/2020 17:07

What was the joke? Although seems to be the way of the world these days. Don't like some ones thoughts? Destroy them, dox them, make them suffer. Ultimately the baying mob mentality makes them far far worse.

ChrisPrattsFace · 21/01/2020 17:07

Also another good reason not to post your life on the internet/social media.

Did I say I condone it?

I can not agree with a joke and mob mentality. They are not mutually exclusive.

Well actually from the update it’s not even his company ... so chances are he will lose his job.

It's the premise of the book 'So you've been publicly shamed' by Jon Ronson, which is a fascinating but quite scary look at the social media mob mentality.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 21/01/2020 17:14

Well it’s not karma it’s vigilantism. Not the same thing.

Yes that comment was made before you posted ....

A similar thing happened to someone who made a Hillsborough joke. I can't say that I'm bothered.

However, the sensible side of me knows that vigilante payback is dangerous and can often target the wrong person.

So it isn't good for society, in general.

Confused

Are you new to MN? People are allowed to post even if it’s already been said. Snippy much?

Cheeseandwin5 · 21/01/2020 17:28

I sort of get the idea of a consequence for an (unpleasant action), but the problem I have with this is how do we know that the 'culprit' actually made the comment or that the meaning has been accidentally or maliciously changed.
I think its so easy for these things too snowball and if he is found to be innocent the damage would have already be done.

Mistystar99 · 21/01/2020 19:32

Hard cheese I guess.... no sympathy from me for this troll...!
