Smart meters

ioioitsoff · 21/01/2020 13:40

I posted this in property but got no replies, sorry it's dull.

Wibu to get a smart meter? What are the pros and cons and will they need to come in my house to do it? The meters are outside.

@pigsDOfly enjoy, I got mine from amazon and love plugging it a tight and happily shuffling on the sofa with my nice warm blanket. I sound about 96 lol.

@TigerOnATrain
From a high level perspective the accurate data they provide is useful for numerous issues for consumers... a reading every hour/ 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week would be massively inconvenient for you to take.. however one dial into the meter to retrieve this is painless for the consumer.

Please be mindful some people cannot access or read their meters (for which these are great) although there are some people who have provided readings wrong for many years (think dial meters etc)

I doubt they will get sacked off as industry wise there is such a benefit (which I won't bore you with but think loss prevention, safety/tampering, data for power generation)

KeepCookingWithGas · 22/01/2020 08:03

The current generation will end up in the landfill though..or circling the globe looking for a " recycler. "

Slightly depressing.

Why is everyone here so suspicious?

I love my smart meter. Yes, a man had to come into my house to set it up, he was here for all of twenty minutes.
I know how much I've spent on energy each day, I never have to send readings to the energy company because it's all automatic. My electricity direct debit has been reduced twice since we got it because they have much more accurate information about my usage.

DickKerrLadies · 22/01/2020 09:22

Why is everyone here so suspicious?

It's that saying that if someone is giving you something for free, you're not the customer - you're the product.

pigsDOfly · 22/01/2020 12:12

@Likethebattle Thanks.

I'm thinking I might go down the amazon route as the one I saw on the Dunhelm website did look a bit old personsih.

I'm guessing I'm probably nearer 96 than you are Grin but it's horrible being cold at any age.

mencken · 22/01/2020 12:27

It's not suspicion, it is fact.

and the smart meter is NOT the 'stupid little box'. It is the actual meter connected to your incoming supply.

Drabarni · 22/01/2020 13:23

herts

You haven't been contacted yet, the place I worked still have a full team calling for readings, and they're advertising for staff.
just because it can be read automatically doesn't mean they won't call, unless they state they won't.
If your company has outsourced metre readings, you'll be called.

Drizzzle · 23/01/2020 14:18

And I can't see why they should be able to know exactly how much I am using at any given time. It's an invasion of privacy. Also don't want them to ve able to turn my supply off.

Topseyt · 23/01/2020 14:33

We got ours late last year, so it is a SMET2. We like it.

No need for meter readers now, and I actually do like the little display screen that is inside the house. I've always been very aware of which appliances use a lot of electricity and which don't. I have always been as careful as possible. I still like it.

I get that the original smart meters couldn't be easily transferred to a different supplier, so we waited for the newer ones to come out.

Classof66 · 23/01/2020 16:24

It is a conspiracy. When the great majority of the population have one, energy will be priced differently at different times of the day.Notice how the advertising has changed.I will not have one until forced to either legally or by price (of contract, some are restricted to smart meter users only)

Mintjulia · 23/01/2020 16:41

I track my usage with the existing meter and have managed to reduce the power used, (and gas used), each year for the last 4 by making little changes, adding thermal linings to curtains etc.

I don’t need a smart meter to track what I use, and I’m not wasting my annual leave to benefit SSE.

Lazypuppy · 23/01/2020 16:59

I live mine as i never have to give meter readings now

junecat · 23/01/2020 18:00

4 times my supplier has insisted we have a smart meter, 4 times an engineer has been out and said it won't work as we are rural and have no signal. The last 3 times we have told them it won't work, they say it will and send an engineer who says it won't work. We had the same engineer twice who said you have to tell them an engineer has already been and it can't be installed. We do but they still keep sending people every few months anyway. Waste of everyone's time and money.
