Where to keep the bloody bikes?

Thosedarnbikes · 21/01/2020 12:25

If your OHs (or you!) cycle, where do they keep their sodding bikes?? Having a battle about whether the garage is secure enough. Surely you don’t all live amongst bikes in your house?!

Any tips for highly secure storage methods I could convince DH with??

AIBU to not want to share my house with a selection of bikes?

Cycloc wall hangers - then pretend they are works of art.

MAFIL · 21/01/2020 14:08

steppemum why would I want to go to all that trouble and expense when I have a secure house already? Its an unnecessary inconvenience and a waste of money that could be spent better.
Besides which, I only buy beautiful bikes so I like looking at them, and I wouldn't want them getting dusty and oily in the garage when DH is working in there.

CilantroChili · 21/01/2020 14:10

I have a Brompton. It sleeps inside, in the hallway and doesn’t take up any space
Ds’ bike is locked to the wall outside front door and is covered

ecuse · 21/01/2020 15:10

Our new Asgard bike shed is arriving tomorrow and I cannot tell you how happy I will be to have them out of the hallway....

Rowgtfc72 · 21/01/2020 15:40

During the week it lives in the kitchen as I have a 5am start. Over the weekend it lives in the garage, we have a wall mounted anchor point and two locks.

Waveysnail · 21/01/2020 15:42

Garage. They are on a hanging rack with massive gold standard chain through them with fixings drilled into the wall and floor

Nacknick · 21/01/2020 15:43

His bikes are in the house.
Mine and the boy's are in the garage

Hmm
JollyAndBright · 21/01/2020 15:46

Ours live in the garage with DPs motorbikes.

Lunafortheloveogod · 21/01/2020 15:47

Surely to buggery you fit something so it’s locked to the wall of the garage? Stick a ring door bell in the garage if you must have the alert onto his phone.. if anyone’s touching his preciouses he can go n protect them.

Who the fuck has the space for 8 bikes in a house! Do they eat their dinner on the bloody things.

CheshireDing · 21/01/2020 15:54

I can’t believe how many people have them in the house ! I would HATE that (not withstanding absolutely no outside space/garage/shed/bike shed to put them in)

Surely a good padlock in the garage is adequate OP ? 🤷‍♀️

Ours are in the tiny shed padlocked to a metal shelving system and the adult ones on the outside side wall of the house, padlocked.

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 21/01/2020 15:55

Mine and dh most expensive bikes are in the asgard bike shed.
The rest are in the garage. We are having the garage rebuilt along with an extension so will be building a more secure garage.
There are wall hooks for bikes so he could hang them in the hall?
Brick up the main garage door? Install a better garage door.
Massive ground anchor and chain.
However my friend had his standard garage door leveled up from the bottom and bolt cutters dealt with the chain.
Make sure dh has any cycling apps set to private so strangers can't see where his bike lives. Be careful not to be followed home and don't leave the bikes on display eg with the garage door open, etc.

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 21/01/2020 15:56

*levered up

ACupOfTeaSolvesEverything · 21/01/2020 15:58

3 bikes in the hallway of my tiny house. Does my f*cking head in.

GG20 · 21/01/2020 15:59

I live in a flat - the bikes (mine!) and associated stuff (turbo trainer, tools etc.) live in the bike room. Grin (It's only a small box room.)

motortroll · 21/01/2020 16:00

Locked garage and specific bike insurance!

motortroll · 21/01/2020 16:00

Used to be in the shed at old house with double padlock but more secure now!

motortroll · 21/01/2020 16:01

I have 6 guitars in my lounge and a snowboard in my bedroom, sailing kit under the bed... there's definitely no room for the bikes!!

LochJessMonster · 21/01/2020 16:02

Never would imagine keeping a bike in the house!
Secure your shed/garage!

Echobelly · 21/01/2020 16:02

I think you're bloody lucky to have a garage but I do know they're not always that secure. We have a bike box in our front garden, seems to be pretty safe. In our flat previous to this house DHs bike went on a wall rack. It was heaven to get bikes out I'd the house when we got the box!

inwood · 21/01/2020 16:03

Unfortunately one on the wall in the hall, HD's ££££ one. The rest are in a lockable cubby thing outside. Mine got nicked from the shed so not doing that again.

FoamingAtTheUterus · 21/01/2020 16:04

Mine live in the house....... Having had a few grands worth of bikes nicked years ago I'm not chancing it. It's not a massive issue, we bring them in at night and dp sticks mine outside when he goes to work at 6am.

We know people who had garages like fort Knox, bikes bolted to walls etc and.the fuckers still took them. Hell, my dp once forgot his second lock so his rear wheel wasn't secured. Some twat stole his wheel which alone was worth a few hundred pounds and stuck his manky old one on
It........in that incident dp really was lucky. As it was dark when he came out of work (( working to pay for stuff for thieving bastards to steal )) he then cycled home at speed along busy A roads for 10 miles . It was only the next day he noticed he'd been riding a death trap.

Some people really are shameless. 😳

lljkk · 21/01/2020 16:18

Expensive bikes are beautiful.

Why not have them on display indoors?

The expensive bikes live indoors, but tucked away.
No regular house insurance would cover their full value, anyway.
The basic bikes (< £1k cost or so) live in garage.
Current garage count may be 11.

bathorshower · 21/01/2020 16:30

Ours are in the garage. We did keep them in the house when we lived in a terrace with which opened straight onto the street, and with no rear access. But we had to have plastic sheeting down as the bikes dripped - water, mud and oil depending on the last ride. Do others not have that issue?

Sympathies for the pp whose partner had the rear wheel 'subbed' - we used to lock the (not terribly nice) bikes outside the front. The locks were excellent, so passers by would steal parts instead. Parts which they needed tools to remove. The front brake mechanism was a low point....

ioioitsoff · 21/01/2020 16:40
  • Never would imagine keeping a bike in the house! Secure your shed/garage!*

Our garage was converted to a room by the previous owners who also built a high wall round the garden so there is no rear access, thankfully we have a older house with a big entrance hall that is another room really so we have the bike on one side and book shelves on the other.

BikeRunSki · 21/01/2020 18:39

We did this, but then we had no where for all the books.
