Facebook - private “likes” trial

Saw another post about FB on here and it got me thinking. Saw an article recently and apparently FB is running some limited trials where “likes” on your post are private - that is only YOU can see the total number of likes a specific post you make receives. Under this system, your friends would only see comments and perhaps a message that “random person X likes this post”, rather than a specific number of likes. That’s only visible to you.

This is not a new concept. I don’t use Instagram but have heard it’s more similar to this. Similarly the Chinese social media app giant Weixin (in English known as WeChat, and a company which FB has been known to look to for new ideas) also functions like this, ie: I see my total likes, whereas my friends only see likes my post received from mutual friends. The total number is only visible to the OP.

Apparently, FB is considering it as a way to relieve pressure and competitiveness on school kids, as well as putting the emphasis more on free communication without worrying about what post will get 50 likes and what doesn’t. There would likely be opposition to the idea from those who use FB for business/promotion and trend setters/“influencers”

Personally, I think it’s a great idea. Nobody likes putting a good honest rant out there and then getting zero or little feedback, public to all, as it can make you feel like a plonker. Similarly, it would take out the competitive edge away from young people which can only be a good thing and would help ease social media created anxiety. The fact that WeChat has 1 billion users happily using such a system suggests that commercially it would be fine as well (after people get used to the idea). It would lead to better more open sharing rather than posts being limited to what might appeal to a broad and disparate mass of people (usually baby photos, holidays, and motivational screenshots!). I’ve always hated this aspect of FB, i don’t want my post to be publicly rated via “Likes”, but if it has to be then it should be private.

the whole business of likes is data collection. Its dangerous

ChasingRainbows19 · 20/01/2020 15:30

Instagram already does this now I can see who and how many but other just see 'Leanne and others like this' on the actual post

Lovemornings · 21/01/2020 06:17

I think it’s a great idea for all the reasons you mentioned. WeChat is a different beast though and not worth the comparison - it is strictly controlled in China and people use it because there is no social media alternative. Currently it is being used to drive ‘citizenship scores’ for which the government monitors users’ social media contacts, messages etc and combines it with other data held on each person (eg level of debt; bear in mind that Income Tax forms etc have to be completed via WeChat, and anyway the Chinese govt has access to all Wechat data). This data is then used to publicly shame people (eg re public debt maps) and I remember hearing the plan is even to use these so-called citizenship scores to allow access to privileges, such as international travel. Users can get in trouble for posting negative messages or for hosting a group chat where someone else is negative. So please let’s not use Wechat as a shining example of when social media works (although If you don’t mind these intrusions and are happy to censor what you upload, wechat is in fact brilliantly functional and many of the things you can do with it - order taxis, pay phone bills, lots of location-based services - are great).

slookiroo · 21/01/2020 06:23

I can see how many likes other people's posts have on Instagram.

Redglitter · 21/01/2020 06:25

Yeah me too I can see the numbers of likes on an Instagram post

Cyberlibre · 21/01/2020 06:33

Yes me too with Instagram. I remember they were going to do a trial but it was only a select few and I didn't hear how it went.

BlimeyCalmDown · 21/01/2020 06:44

I like my likes Grin I'd prefer if it was opt in.

ChasingRainbows19 · 21/01/2020 07:13

I must be in the trial on Instagram Hmm cos I still can't see numbers of likes on.... just ' liked by lucy1234 and thousands of others or 'and others' if someone with fewer followers...

Facebook - private “likes” trial

I don't believe fb & instagram are doing it solely to protect mental health. If that was true why not hide the number of followers? I think it's more a case of "hiding" declining engagement. Also they probably want more content from users to encourage engagement, removing likes probably encourages this as there is less pressure to post just what's popular. Plus if users do feel more happy using these platforms they are more likely to stay & post more instead of going to others.

heartsonacake · 21/01/2020 07:27

ChasingRainbows19 and anyone else who says they can just see “X liked this and thousands of others”, if you click on thousands of others it will give you a list of everyone else who liked it too.

Likes aren’t private on Instagram.

I don’t think hiding likes is a good idea, or at the very least it should be opt-in. If anyone is struggling so much they have trouble with likes on social media, they have bigger problems they need to fix and hiding one will not help, it will only prolong.

Lampan · 21/01/2020 07:29

Hmm. I too am sceptical about the mental health explanation... if they are hiding the number of likes you then why differentiate between ‘lucy1234 and others’ and ‘lucy1234 and thousands of others’?
If a post has thousands of likes does anyone actually care about the exact number?

parsnippoop · 21/01/2020 07:31

Facebook is declining particularly in the key younger demographic. I'm still bitter they bought instagram & messed up the algorithms.

parsnippoop · 21/01/2020 07:34

Ads are coming to whatsapp this yr I believe so fb will probably end up ruining that.

letmeinthroughyourwindow · 21/01/2020 07:39

I can't see likes on other people's posts on Instagram. It shows if mutual friends have liked it 'and others'. Clicking on 'and others' doesn't reveal anything extra. I didn't realise that it wasn't like that for everybody. A good idea I think.

Legoandloldolls · 21/01/2020 07:41

I dont Fb can be good for anyone mental health. I never post on there anymore and each time I go on there I'm just hiding political rants.

Also over the years it feels like a lot of real life interaction has stopped with extended family. Like it's a substitute for proper contact.

It's a good thing to hide likes but I still find FB a bit toxic overall so completely avoid it

lowlandLucky · 21/01/2020 07:48

Does anyone really care how many "likes" they get on FB, does it impact on anyones life if nobody "likes" the photo of your dinner ? Surely we are all over the age 7 ?

WeHaveSnowdrops · 21/01/2020 08:01

I don't notice Likes. Mine or anyone else's.

ChasingRainbows19 · 21/01/2020 08:33

Mines been this way for a while I didn't notice at first as I just like looking at the photos/vids not interested in the 'likes' amount etc. I didn't know it listed them too, but to be honest I never actually click on the likes to see how many they have or who has liked it. Most people wouldn't.

However some people when browsing past would notice lucy1234 post with 14631 likes. Though I'm not convinced it's for user MH. It still says 'thousands of others' so obvious it's a popular picture in that case for example.

Seeing as it's all owned but the same company Im not surprised it will go over to Facebook to. I do 'like' some of my friends posts but I'm not a collector of likes myself as I rarely post and I have small amount of friends that see my posts. People do seem to use them as validation though.

midnightmisssuki · 21/01/2020 08:39

I think they should just get rid of all the likes - there is damage to some youngsters/vulnerable adults mental health either which way you look at it.

recrudescence · 21/01/2020 09:30

I’d be a bit sad because in 2019 one of my posts got 14 likes, 2 hearts and a grin and I was looking to beat that record in 2020.

AutumnRose1 · 21/01/2020 11:35

“ I don't believe fb & instagram are doing it solely to protect mental health.”

The data will have a higher price because fewer people will have access. There are tutorials about data mining, the tech giants don’t want it losing value because a small start up can just analyse it themselves.
