Worried about my 15 month old’s speech

SpongeCake23 · 20/01/2020 08:37

My 15 month old DS is very active and has been walking well since about 11 months. He understands instructions and if I say for example “Can you get me the...” he will do it. He knows what a lot of words mean and is starting to point lots of things out in books if I ask him to, e.g. “Can you point to the cat?” Or “Can you point to the ladybird?” Etc.
However the only word he says very clearly is “Daddy”. He occasionally says “Mumumum” and sometimes it sounds like he says “Dat” for cat and “Gog” for dog, but it’s not consistent. The word he says the most is “Daddy”.
He also shakes his head for no.
He makes lots of noises and babbles a lot, in what he probably thinks is talking.
Does this sound normal?

He's very young. Sounds normal to me.

SockQueen · 20/01/2020 08:42

Completely normal. He understands and is communicating with you, more words will come soon.

DS1 only had 3 words at that age (daddy, apple, achoo). Within 3 months I'd lost count of his vocabulary. There's a very wide range of normal in speech development, and your DS sounds well within that.

Tattooedmama · 20/01/2020 08:42

My little one is 2 years 1 month old and hes still not talking, he can say cat and juice but everything else he will point or take me by the hand to show me. He does understand most of what i say, still frustrating for me and him when hes tantruming because he cant say what he wants.
I am worried too like you but my HV told me he cant be referred to speach therapy till she sees him for his 2 year check

IvinghoeBeacon · 20/01/2020 08:45

At 15mo I would not be worried at all

Ewanismydreamsheep · 20/01/2020 08:46

He sounds the same as my almost 15 month old. He says Daddy and sometimes mummy. He may have said cheese a few times the other day but hasn’t said it again. I’m not too worried because he understands instructions and babbles so I’m sure he’ll get there eventually! I also know his friends seem to be around the same level as him

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 20/01/2020 08:47

@Tattooedmama that's not true, if you want a referral and your hv isn't being helpful you can also go through your gp. My ds has been seen by SALT since before he was 2 years.

Postmanbear · 20/01/2020 08:48

I have a 15 month old DS and he only says Ka, Da and Ma. He understands instructions so I’m not worried. His older brother was a late talker but then exploded at about 2.5 years old. I think they only need 15 words by the time they are 2 or something.

Excited101 · 20/01/2020 08:49

If you’d said he was 2.5 I might have been a bit worried but at 15 months he’s doing really well!!

SVRT19674 · 20/01/2020 08:51

My 18 month old is like that. Totally normal.

ColaFreezePop · 20/01/2020 08:55

It's normal. Toddlers either seem to be walkers or talkers.

Boys often seem to be walkers rather than talkers, but as long as they can follow instructions and say simple words then I wouldn't worry.

(I remember freaking a sibling out over her son compared to another sibling's son as they were a month apart in age.)

formerbabe · 20/01/2020 08:56

I've never known a 15 month old to be talking. I wouldn't be worried yet and one of my dc has a severe speech disorder.

IvinghoeBeacon · 20/01/2020 08:58

Haha my son took a while to both walk and talk - all completely within normal limits but not especially advanced at either!

ChocolateCoins19 · 20/01/2020 09:06

All kids are difference. My. Ds didn't walk till 18m..talk till nr 3.
But had great understanding

Dd walked before 10m. Is now nr 2 and has a voxab of prob 200 plus words. And knows how to count, recognises and tells us shapes.
My nephew who is exact same age. Says a few words but has great understanding. Walked at 10m.

I'm. Due this week and I always wonder if hell be more like ds or dd.
Honest don't worry about it. He will talk in his own time.

userabcname · 20/01/2020 09:06

Sounds very similar to my son. His speech really took off after his second birthday. He's 2 and a half now and can speak in 4 or 5 word sentences. I definitely hear kids of the same age or younger talking better than he does but the health visitor seems happy with him and he understands pretty much everything.

BlackeyedSusan · 20/01/2020 09:07

Don't worry yet, but do take notes of what he knows. Is it still fifty words by 24 months?

DD was no where near to this with just over a month to go... By 24 months had several times 50 words.

Ds was a late developer. SaLT, but by KS2 was above average.

dairyfairies · 20/01/2020 09:18

at 15 months, most children don't talk at all.

I have a child with severe learning/communication needs. At that age, nobody will look at spoken words. It is important that the DC communicates (gestures, pointing) and that the child can understand instructions. My then 15 months on did not talk but at the same time understood nothing. Lack of understanding was a concern - the lack of talking none at all.

Sosososotired · 20/01/2020 10:48

2 of my dcs didn’t speak until closer to 18 months. Both were fluent and clear speakers by 2.5. Your DS is still very little, and has a good understanding so I’d expect it won’t be long before he says more. But if concerned speak to HV.

Damntheman · 20/01/2020 13:02

Sounds normal to me OP don't worry :) Both of mine were nearer three before they were conversational with proper sentences.

ForInstance · 20/01/2020 13:08

No cause for concern at all OP. (I’m a qualified speech and language therapist. I also have a 14 month old who is doing about the same as yours on language, but not quite as well on waking by the sound of it, and I’m not worried about him either Smile). HTH

ForInstance · 20/01/2020 13:08

^ walking, I meant to say

Shayisgreat · 20/01/2020 13:11

Gosh I'm glad to see this thread because my 15 month old is very similar to yours OP and I was starting to get worried about him! Might wait til he's 18 months to get worried now!

firstimemamma · 20/01/2020 13:12

Your child says about the same amount as my 17 month old - possibly more - and I'm not remotely worried. Relax. Smile

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 20/01/2020 13:14

Completely normal and children who are a bit slower on their first words often catch up rapidly with earlier starters. My daughter said her first word at 10 1/2 months and was talking in simple sentences at 18 months. My son said his first word at 16 months and was talking in simple sentences at 18 months.

Your son's development is well within normal bounds.

Mamabear144 · 20/01/2020 13:16

Completely normal, he's still so young, some have words at that age, some don't. He understands you which is the main thing, he'll talk when hes ready x

ActualHornist · 20/01/2020 13:16

He’s only just over a year old.
