Steam oven: what do I use it for?

New kitchen has a steam oven part.

I love cooking but I’ve never used one. If you have one, what would you / do you use it for?

The clue, of course, is in the name. If there is no instruction manual present you can google the model number and it will be online. Manufacturers of these are also pretty good at developing recipes for the newbie to try. It's my own favourite way to cook fish so I would recommend that. These ovens are also easy to clean.

Baking bread?

picklemepopcorn · 18/01/2020 13:00

Bread. It gives sourdough in particular a better crust.
I'd guess fish, delicate things that want to stay moist.

Peridot1 · 18/01/2020 13:02

Ooh. Following with interest. We have one. Been in the house over 8 years and it’s still brand new.

Interested that you can bake sourdough in it.

Waffles80 · 18/01/2020 13:33

Thanks @picklemepopcorn that’s useful - it was that kind of hint / suggestion / personal recommendation I was after! I’ll try sourdough; and I’ve found a salmon, asparagus and dill recipe.

@mochamacro I did appreciate that the steam part meant it was good for steaming; I realise I ought to have specified I understood that, and was really after specific things people have made that are really much better done in a steam oven!

I too was bamboozled by mine but 2 years down the line:

Steam nearly all veg including frozen stuff
Fish is brill
Turkey at Christmas! I have a crown and blast in oven then 1.5hr steam then final blast in oven
Rice - best rice ever, always perfectly cooked
Reheating stuff if microwave is otherwise engaged
Pasta if hob is full or if I'm doing the veg in there anyway

However, the best feature without a doubt is the timer. Does yours have that?

I very regularly have something in the slow cooker and then use the timer to cook the pasta / rice.

There is nothing more smug than walking in the door with 2 starving kids post swimming and walking straight to the kitchen to plate up!!

Duvetdweller · 18/01/2020 14:15

All if the above (except sourdough - I’m going to try that). Also you can boil eggs in there (hard or soft), rice is always perfect. Chicken breast, stays really moist.

TotorosNeighbour · 18/01/2020 14:16

Crème caramel!

Waffles80 · 18/01/2020 16:03

The thing is, I steam all veg on the hob so how does it differ? Does it?

What do you put the rice in to cook it?

@FusionChefGeoff yes! It has a timer! It’s only small, a half oven and microwave. Would definitely get a turkey in it which is really exciting as I’m sick of it being dry!

Jacket potatoes - 100% steam at 180C gives really fluffy potatoes.
Roast Beef - not steamed but cooked at low temp with a bit of moisture with a meat thermometer.
Steamed rice with chicken done in one dish.
Steamed fish comes out perfect and not overcooked.
Sourdough or crusty bread is great. Also puff pastry.

Which steam ovens do you all have please? I’m looking to buy one but can’t find any reviews!
