To keep the parcel?

Myself and my flatmate moved home over Christmas leaving our flat empty. Last week when I came back there was a note from our neighbours saying a parcel had been delivered and left on our doorstep so they took it in after several days as they figured we had gone home.

Neither myself or my flatmate had ordered anything so we didn't know what it was. Several times over the course of the week we went across to go and collect it but must've keep missing neighbours. Last night they were in and handed us a parcel which had the name of the previous tenant of our flat (we rent).

It was an amazon parcel delivered by Hermes with no return address so we opened it up to see if there was a returns label inside. There wasn't. Inside is a beauty product which I use so I know it's about £30.

Now is the awkward bit. I know the previous tenant no longer lives in the uk and as there's no returns address it'll just be destroyed if we give it back to a courier. It's already been with our neighbours for at least a week, no ones come looking for it and no one was even in the flat to receive the parcel. Aibu to keep it??

I'd keep it dont care if I get judged for this

SoupDragon · 17/01/2020 13:19

Of you contact Amazon they tell you to keep it and your conscience will be clear.

SoupDragon · 17/01/2020 13:19

If. Not of.

TheFaerieQueene · 17/01/2020 13:19

I’d donate it to a woman’s refuge.

zoobincan · 17/01/2020 13:20

Send it back

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 17/01/2020 13:20

Contact Amazon. They'll almost definitely tell you to keep it but it'll give you permission to do so.

frazzledasarock · 17/01/2020 13:21

Does it say what company sent it?

catlady3 · 17/01/2020 13:21

Get in touch with amazon, if you can actually find a way to contact them about an order that isn't yours, that is! My guess is trying to do the right thing here is going to be a huge hassle, but I'd at least try.

frazzledasarock · 17/01/2020 13:22

Ah amazon contact them and let them know. They will likely tell you to keep it.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 17/01/2020 13:23

Id stick it back in the post as a 'return to sender'

antisupermum · 17/01/2020 13:23

Keep it.

SoupDragon · 17/01/2020 13:24

if you can actually find a way to contact them about an order that isn't yours, that is!

You can probably just start an online chat and say "I've received a parcel for a previous resident who no longer lives in the U.K."

Straycatstrut · 17/01/2020 13:56

Previous tenant will have realised the error and may even be refunded from Amazon (I doubt it though as it was her mistake) but she'll have written it off by now. I've done this before - had something sent to my old address 100 miles away, and it was signed for by the new tenants (worth less than £30) obviously it'd cost far more to go and collect it so didn't bother. My own fault.

I'd keep it.

Kamma89 · 17/01/2020 14:00

If you hadn't opened it I would have contacted amazon & they almost certainly would have said keep or donate (they tell me to donate when they've sent double or incorrect etc). However, you've opened it now (which you really shouldn't have done) under these unique circumstances I'd now just keep & use.

bananafritters · 17/01/2020 14:00

Oops accidental drip feed, I've just checked the box again and it doesn't actually say amazon on it I just assumed because that's where I've bought it from in the past. All it says is Hermes and multiple different retailers stock it

OP posts:
bananafritters · 17/01/2020 14:02

Makes sense really as we opened it to check if there was a returns label and we would've have done that if it said amazon on the box.

SouthWestmom · 17/01/2020 14:07

What was on the outside packaging?

bananafritters · 17/01/2020 14:11

@Noeuf it just has a printed label with name & address with the Hermes courier info and a barcode. Plain box otherwise.

SouthWestmom · 17/01/2020 14:55

How odd. All my make up stuff comes with a return or delivery slip. Unless Amazon but then the box is branded.

SoupDragon · 17/01/2020 15:20

Hermes aren't going to come and collect it and you've tried to find out where it came from so I don't see what else you can do really.

Redglitter · 17/01/2020 15:24

I'd keep it. Hermes are notoriously bad for customer services. I've seen people commenting loads of times that they cant get through or cant get anywhere with them. I cant imagine theyll be in the least bit interested
