There are no DM readers here.

I realise that.

However, I regularly sully my poor, defenseless eyeballs by getting stuck into a free DM. Usually in a Waitrose cafe*.

I like the gossip. I like criticising the right-wing bias. I like, very occasionally, the writing (Craig Brown mostly).

I wouldn't dream of buying it.
I buy the Times and the Guardian and add in the Sunday Telegraph. Totally based on good cryptic crosswords and quizzes.

I think the DM is a rag and I wouldn't pay for it on principle (and the crossword is rubbish).

But - like the occasional Gregg's chicken bake, trashy television, blue waterline eyeliner - it is strangely addictive.

And, for all that nobody here reads it, it's often quoted.

I suppose my AIBU is:

Am I wrong to read the DM without buying it, even though I realise it's an awful right-wing rag that is, occasionally, funny and to believe it's read by more Mumsnetters than would own up to it?

I read it every day online. Not the sleb shite though, just the news.
I don't give a monkeys what anyone thinks.

RunForBurritos · 19/01/2020 18:15

Good for you shake it up. I wouldn't read it as I said but I don't get this thread. What difference does it make whether it's free or not? If OP enjoys reading it then she enjoys reading it. And?

lisag1969 · 19/01/2020 18:19

I read mail on line. As you said it's free x

TheSquitz · 19/01/2020 18:35

I read it in Costa and take the code on the back to boost my Nectar points. I usually biy the Mail on Sunday for the You magazine inside.

irregularegular · 19/01/2020 18:40

Some of it can be entertaining.

I think it is worth reading so that you know what tosh a large proportion of the population are being influenced by.

I work at an Oxbridge College. The common room used to receive all the broadsheets but no tabloids. A few years ago we voted to subscribe to the tabloids too. Reading them gives useful information about popular opinions. They aren't read much though. The fights are always over copies of the Guardian and FT.

TorkTorkBam · 19/01/2020 18:48

It is one of the most read newspapers in the UK, I think you would be ignorant to ignore it.

I read it online in work during my lunch hour, it's satisfyingly trashy takes my mind off how appalling my job is for an hour 😂

justforthisnow · 19/01/2020 18:53

I read it to keep an eye on the racist fuckers and how they're thinking (or not, in most cases). I draw the line at downloading the app, which for some reason feels like crossing a line, no, I don't know why.

justforthisnow · 19/01/2020 18:56

I may add a friend of mine worked for a red top and some of them (not the DM) are more scrupulous than the broadsheets in how they research, write and report on news. Apparently it's more difficult to write a redtop article as it needs to be concise, accurate, and also appeal to the target market, who want a snappy read. A hard task by all accounts.
Digressing from the thread, soz.

That’s why many years ago (I’ve no idea if still the case) writers for The Sun earner between three and five times more than writers for The Guardian.

I have the app and read it because its easy to navigate and use plus the spelling mistakes and comment section are funny but you can't believe anything they write or take it seriously

justforthisnow · 19/01/2020 19:02

There was a time when it was a respected paper, believe it or not. A couple of centuries ago.

cloudyrain · 19/01/2020 19:03

It is where I keep up with all the zeleb gossip and I scan through most days.
If I feel the need to raise my blood pressure I read the 'news' articles and the associated comments, but mostly I just scan through the headlines just so I know who is allegedly bonking who.

Feelingabitashamed · 19/01/2020 20:17

I like to read a range of viewpoints, especially when reading around a particular story to get a good understanding of it from angles I hadn't thought of, also what the response and reaction is likely to be. A lot of people do agree with the Mail's point of view and comment accordingly and it is important to know what these widespread ideas are (I don't really know any mail readers).

I too would never pay for it but I think with the very progressive views I see on social media it is easy to feel part of a liberal echo chamber and forget that very nationalistic and conservative views still exist (Jan Moir etc). It would be a mistake to do so.

Feelingabitashamed · 19/01/2020 20:18

Plus they do the best sadface stories of any of the nationals!

Etinox · 19/01/2020 20:47

Absolutely not.
Somebody might see you.
Most humiliating moment of my life was sitting in Business Class, upgraded but still feeling pretty full of myself, handsome man sat next to me, friendly smiles and small talk and he literally froze and put the screen up when he saw the I was reading the Mail.

Tbh if he was that much of a po-faced small-minded guardian only reader then it wasn't any loss I don't think.

Etinox · 19/01/2020 21:04
Blush I think I’m a po faced Guardian reader It was 10 years ago. I was, and am, happily married. Still wouldn’t read The Mail in public Wink
Teateaandmoretea · 19/01/2020 21:12

Possibly not but reading different views develops critical thinking imo 😊.

tisonlymeagain · 19/01/2020 21:17

Oh I bloody love the Mail app for sone entertainment. I like the sleb gossip but also the crazy outlandish headlines. I often just skip to the comments - they're my fav part!
