Milk man is now using a big dairy distributor so I've found a lovely little farm that also do door stop delivery in glass! Win!

They mainly do raw milk.. is raw milk any good? Or should I stay away from the ew that milk might kill us as my DH said

OP posts:
stripeypillowcase · 17/01/2020 05:59

stay away from raw milk. especially for children and immune compromised people.
despite testing tb is prevalent in cattle in the uk and there is a (admittedly small) risk of tbh and other food borne illnesses.

WhoToTell · 17/01/2020 06:01

I lived on a farm whilst very young and I remember having raw milk. But we would only drink it raw if it was from that morning. Personally there is no way I would drink raw milk that had been delivered - you have no idea how old the milk is or their hygiene standards. I t try honk your DH is correct here!

WhoToTell · 17/01/2020 06:02

Sorry - I think your DH is correct here! Also second the above poster, to much a risk for any kids, elderly, or immune compromised people

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 17/01/2020 06:10

A colleague almost died from contracting brucellosis from raw milk. Fucked her gut up permanently.

EveHen · 17/01/2020 06:16

Raw milk can defiantly kill you or cause serious illness. Why take the risk??

whiskeyandice · 17/01/2020 06:17

Sorry for my ignorance. What the hell is raw milk?!

NotBadConsidering · 17/01/2020 06:17

Raw milk kills children. There’s a risk of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) developing from E.Coli infection.

There’s bound to be someone come along and say “I drank raw milk as a kid and it never did me any harm!” but they were lucky overall the reality is we pasteurise milk for very good reasons. I’m sure the producer will say they take all precautions blah blah blah but why risk it? What’s the point?

PositiveVibez · 17/01/2020 06:20

Sorry for my ignorance. What the hell is raw milk?!

Straight from the cow. No pasteurisation process.

bgmama · 17/01/2020 06:25

Presumably the OP will boil or pasteurize it at home before consuming it, in which case it will be absolutely safe. OP, you can google instructions on how to do that. Where I live, it is quite common and it is delicious. Once you try it, you will never want to go back to store-bought milk.

Pluckedpencil · 17/01/2020 06:26

We get unpasteurised milk sometimes from the farm near here but it's only to be used when boiled for caffe latte ett

dottiedodah · 17/01/2020 06:28

This is not safe especially for young children. Pasteurisation was brought about to ensure safety and eradication of illnesses from cows milk .Please dont take the risk its just not worth it !

NewYoiker · 17/01/2020 06:33

Yeah okay maybe he might be right!

OP posts:
Leflic · 17/01/2020 06:33

I don’t drink milk unless it’s unpasteurised but I agree you have to know it providence. Although to be fair most herdsman wouldn’t let anyone sell on milk that had a risk. Cows get milked a couple of times a day so it’s easy to monitor or release a bad batch.

It’s actually much better for you than pasteurised milk. The fat doesn’t get destroyed and contains lots of good bacteria and nutrients lost in pasteurised milk.

LazyFace · 17/01/2020 06:34

I love raw milk, never had a problem with it.

Leflic · 17/01/2020 06:35

And environmentally it’s got to be better not having to travel miles in a tanker to be processed miles away.

Pegase · 17/01/2020 06:36

He's definitely right. Children in particular have become extremely ill from drinking unpasteurised milk. Why take the risk.

DonPablo · 17/01/2020 06:36

How far away from the farm do you live? Because raw milk is tightly controlled and should legally only be sold from the farm gate. There is an exception to this, and it hinges on your distance from the farm.

Watchagotcha · 17/01/2020 06:37

@NotBadConsidering

I’m that person ;-) I grew up on a dairy farm, my dad was head dairyman. So we all drank unpasteurised milk daily for years. Never caught anything from it AFAIK - except possibly an aversion to rice pudding (we didn’t have much money so my mum made a lot of milky dishes from free milk!).

I don’t know if I’d drink raw milk that was from a supplier. The pp is correct that pasteurising became widespread for very good public health reasons. We live in France now and eat a lot of unpasteurised cheeses though, which carry the same risk (the soft ones anyway) and I don’t think twice about doing that.

OP what are your objections to the big dairy supplier vs lovely little farm?

Fluteytooting · 17/01/2020 06:45

There’s a farm down the road from us that sells raw milk and we’ve been buying it for years. They’re very busy, and no one has ever fallen ill from it.

gaffamate · 17/01/2020 06:48

I looked into using raw milk as my daughter has cmpa and I'm convinced the increase in cmpa is related to pasteurisation and not getting the 'good bacteria' from raw milk. But i quickly came across lots of stories of people who has nearly died so decided it wasn't worth the risk. Oat milk it is!

Nomorewine77 · 17/01/2020 06:48

Hi I have an autoimmune condition and also take immunosuppressents, my eldest DS used to work on a farm and would bring back raw milk, I contracted a nasty vomiting and diarrhoea bug which lasted going on 10 days. DS also had the same but with milder symptoms. My consultant was very clear that under no circumstances ( for me anyway ) was I to drink any more of the stuff! He also said it wasn't a good idea for the very young or elderly to either. I can't remember which bacteria it was but he said it can be found in raw milk and can be incredibly dangerous, affecting the brain.

CountFosco · 17/01/2020 06:52

It’s actually much better for you than pasteurised milk.

As long as you don't mind the risk of TB.

happycamper11 · 17/01/2020 06:53

No I wouldn't - the annoying thing is there are health benefits and I bet it tasted delicious but only if you don't contract some horrible illness alongside. I'm sure it's still illegal to sell raw milk here in Scotland

dudsville · 17/01/2020 06:58

I'm surprised they are allowed to deliver it. FWIW, I did have raw milk as a child and it never did me any harm, but I lived on the farm and the milk was collected that morning.

1forAll74 · 17/01/2020 07:02

Many years ago, like the oldie days, My family,in fact everyone in the town, used to have their milk delivered,by horse and cart,by a man from his farm nearby. He came round the houses everyday, the milk was in big metal churns, and you had to go out in the street with your jugs, and get all the milk that you wanted.. It was how it was, and nobody seemed to have issue with it,or any health concerns.. But I never had any, as the very thought of drinking milk would make me heave and feel sick, So I have never drank milk all my life.
