sports direct(ly) refuse to be consumer nice

"We do our best to ensure all of our customers enjoy a happy shopping experience", is what it says on the Sports Direct website. Today I had a very less than happy shopping experience when going back to branch to ask for a replacement for a rucksack that had torn after just 9 months use.
"It's over 6-months old" and "I can see it's been used", said the manager who came down to examine the torn rucksack my teenager used for school. Of course it has been used. I didn't buy it to sit in a cupboard. But not able to stay together for even 9 months is too much to expect? Really? Entire babies are built in that.
"Can I get this in writing?", I asked. To be fair this manager did just that, even giving a phone number (head office?) when I said I would be going to BBC 3 counties about this. It took another request for him to add his own name too but he did.
What really gets me is, if Sports Direct think 6 months is the life expectancy of such products then why not make that clear at the point of sale. Tell me directly and openly, before I buy, that the £14.99 I am about to pay for the rucksack reduced from £29.99, is only expected to last up to 6 months. If I still choose to buy it and it fails even at 6 months the fair enough. But why choose to tell me this is really a £30 rucksack bargain, reduced by 50% to just £15, and then, when it fails, refuse to honour the quality they implied they sold me?
I'm taking this to JVS on BBC 3 counties radio. The monetary value on my individual item is not much but, spread across other such customers, the total injustice is probably huge.

Seriously 9 months of use daily and want a replacement. I bet you the person that took an empty cake box to a shop after a birthday party and ask for money back as its eaten but someone didnt like it. I was told the cake story by a friend who worked in morrisons where this really happened!

ihearyoutoo · 17/01/2020 07:21

Sports direct return policy is shocking. I bought ds a pair of trainers, he didn't like them, I tried to return for a refund to be told can only exchange that is their policy. Why did they not tell me this when I bought? Never go there now.

thekaiserswife · 17/01/2020 07:22

You bought a cheap backpack and broke it after 9 months....the BBC won't be interested.

YABU

Coatzillaclaus · 17/01/2020 07:22

Surely it’s within your rights to get an exchange as it’s faulty within a year?

Although, fwiw i’d never buy a school rucksack from SD - I’ve had a good look at them before and they’re just cheap and flimsy.

We really like Dakine rucksacks (Amazon have them). They are very hard wearing and last for ages.

But agree Sports Direct are totally lacking in customer services and I avoid them if at all possible.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/01/2020 07:23

You’re daft for believing the rrp. It was a £15 rucksack.

Kids at school do all sorts with their rucksacks, slide them down the corridors, etc. Can’t believe you had the brass neck to try for a refund never mind argue it. I’m cringing for you.

ChessieFL · 17/01/2020 07:24

Agree with Pineapple. It wasn’t a £30 quality rucksack. It was a £15 quality rucksack that they put a £30 RRP on to make you think you were getting a bargain when they sold it for £15. In shops like that the ‘reduced’ price is always the real price they intend to sell at.

Scarsthelot · 17/01/2020 07:24

Surely it’s within your rights to get an exchange as it’s faulty within a year?

Nope. At it ripped. Things dont just rip on their own.

Do you really believe you can have a bag for a year, then it gets damaged and you get your money back?

spongejack · 17/01/2020 07:25

It's irrelevant if you're right or wrong, SD are renowned for not replacing faulty goods. Their returns policy is dreadful.

TruffleShuffles · 17/01/2020 07:25

My school bag was annihilated by the end of the school year. It was kicked around, thrown around and and constantly over full. I don’t see how you can say it didn’t have heavy use? It would have been used almost daily and filled with presumably exercise books, p.e kit, maybe cooking stuff?

I have to say I’d be wondering how my child had treated it rather than threatening sports direct with consumer rights over something 9 months old.

RuggyPeg · 17/01/2020 07:25

If you bought a £60 one, chances are you'd get more than 6 months use out of it. Sports direct are an appalling company and no, they don't 'do' refunds......steer well clear in future.

fishonabicycle · 17/01/2020 07:27

I wouldn't expect heavy wear from a £15 rucksack. That is why I investigated online when I needed one and spent a bit more - it's lasted over a year now and is perfect still (fjallraven kanken, bought on offer).

fishonabicycle · 17/01/2020 07:28

And sports direct are a shit company. I practically had to follow the manager around the shop to get a refund on an item that was damaged when I bought it!

I'm not sure if I'd pick this hill to die on-

kids are hard on rucksacks.
I think getting the managers name and kicking up a fuss in the store and now going on the radio over a £15 rucksack that lasted 9 months is an extreme response to the situation.

I'd let it go if I were you

Lepetitpiggy · 17/01/2020 07:30

This is one of the funniest things I've woken up to for a while Smile

Pukkatea · 17/01/2020 07:31

Absolutely howling that you would go to the BBC because sports direct wouldn't replace a 9 months old backpack...you are being utterly ridiculous.

AdoreTheBeach · 17/01/2020 07:32

I can tell you a tale of two rucksacks both bought at same time, same shop, same model. One was used by DH once a week to hold his mobile phone, towel, water bottle and gym shoes. Still going strong a few years later. Looks pristine.

The other died after 8 months of almost daily use as a school bag for our then teen daughter. As kids do, it was regularly over stuffed, thrown about, used as both a pillow and seat when hanging about, used out in all weather.

You can certainly understand the shops policy. Take a good look at the rucksack and how it was treated/used. You’ll understand the shop/manager much better.

OhMeows · 17/01/2020 07:32

Things children do with school bags:

Carry multiple heavy text books causing the seams to split
Use them as goalposts
Lob them at each other aka bag fight
Chuck them in a pile on the floor on the wet playground
Drag them along the floor
Kick them around

A £30 reduced to £15 bag from sports direct
Isn't going to last more than a school year. 9 months isn't bad going.

izzybee55 · 17/01/2020 07:33

Going to the bbcBlushBlushBlush nah you must be joking. They'll all be having a right laugh about you in the staff room

Smileyaxolotl1 · 17/01/2020 07:35

Sorry yanbu and I am someone who does take things back and expect refunds.
I took a pair of shoes back to a different store as they had worn severely and got an exchange but that was after 3 months, I’m an adult who treats things with care and I was pleased I got the exchange and wouldn’t have kicked off if I hadn’t - would have just not shopped there again.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 17/01/2020 07:35

I meant YABU!

Oldishusernewname · 17/01/2020 07:37

YABVU

This can't be good for you, getting so worked up about a £15 rucksack that's lasted best part of a year that you go off on one at the manager threatening with the BBC and then ranting about it on here at 3am

What do you do if something really bad happens?

Massive overreaction, chill out for your own sake

dtc24 · 17/01/2020 07:39

I agree with oldishusernewname. It can't be healthy to be this angry about a bag.

cocomelon23 · 17/01/2020 07:40

Wow, I can't believe some people! £30 is cheap for a bag (let alone £15!). Very cheeky of you to try and return it after 9 months Shock

Apolloanddaphne · 17/01/2020 07:40

I don't think I could get worked up about a £15 bag lasting 9 months. I would reckon I got what I paid for.
