To drive at the speed limit

Mamboitaliano · 16/01/2020 22:39

OK I know in theory I'm not being unreasonable not to break the law - but why do I feel like I'm the only one then?

I drive to work along a dual carriageway. It's a clearly signposted 60mph road. The traffic in the left lane drives at 60. The traffic in the right lane drives at 70+ There's a roundabout where I have to turn off this road, taking the third exit (right), so I move into the right lane and drive at 60. Because it's the speed limit. But almost always, someone charges right up behind me and then drives intimidatingly close to the back of my car. I really really hate it. I feel like I'm being bullied each time, and I also feel very uncomfortable with having drivers so close to the back of my car. If I had to brake they'd go right into the back of me.

Am I just boring and nobody actually drives at the speed limit? Am I being unreasonable driving at the speed limit and annoying all the other drivers on their way to work?

YABU = You don't need to drive at 60.
YANBU = You should drive at the speed limit

Nah. I drive fast. I drive a fast car and I enjoy speed.

Me too. I have advanced and racing licences and a heavily modified car. I drive to the conditions - empty motorway at night I’ll go faster than the dual carriageway on the way to work in traffic. I don’t tailgate but I will flash lane hoggers to get out of the way.

Never been caught speeding in 25 years. Never had any points or fines.

Mischance · 18/01/2020 16:06

I find these sorts of threads really hard - I worked for a trauma service and I know what speeders do to the human body. And to their families. And to the speeders who have a lot to hold on their conscience for the rest of their lives.

Speed limits are there for a reason - just stick to them - it is not rocket science. To the 16% above........just do as you are f***g told.

Mischance · 18/01/2020 16:07

Boobiliboobiliboo - is there a vomit icon? Jesus - did you but know.......you are stupid and anti-social.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 18/01/2020 16:08

Speed is a factor in a tiny proportion of accidents.

Speed isn’t dangerous. Inappropriate speed is. But fast is not always inappropriate.

We could limit every road to 20mpg. There would still be fatalities.

cologne4711 · 18/01/2020 16:10

It's about time we banned heavily modified cars on roads. Why on earth is it allowed to eg put on a massive loud exhaust to annoy everyone? Fine on racetracks, not fine anywhere else.

cologne4711 · 18/01/2020 16:16

However plenty of people do 30/40 on 60 roads in good conditions and I think those people shouldn’t be driving

Agree. Had one of those today, so frustrating in good conditions. And no, they couldn't see anything I couldn't. No bikes, no holes in the road.

They were in a Nissan Micra and crawling along for no good reason except they were either elderly or on a mobile phone - or potentially both!

The problem with those situations is that you then get tail-gated - I'm not sure why, these idiots must be able to see that there is a slow-moving car in front of you but for some reason you get the blame for the lack of sensible progress.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 18/01/2020 16:16

What makes you think the exhaust is loud?

NeedAnExpert · 18/01/2020 16:17

They were in a Nissan Micra

Universally bought by shite drivers. See also Toyota Avensis.

cologne4711 · 18/01/2020 16:21

I agree with the PP who talked about the person who does something like overtake you, driving like a knob, and then a few minutes later you serenely cruise up behind them at a traffic light and think, 'Was it worth it then?

Even better if you come alongside them and can smile and wave :) I usually find they look straight ahead and don't look towards me at all.

To be fair it has happened to me too, I don't overtake dangerously, but I've pulled out to overtake someone on a dual carriageway and a few minutes later we've got to lights and they've caught me up.

cologne4711 · 18/01/2020 16:22

What makes you think the exhaust is loud

It's the most basic modification so the first I thought of. The funny thing is, if one goes up our high street all the men look admiring and all the women look irritated.

MimiLaRue · 18/01/2020 16:22

YES! Ive done this before and youre right- they try really hard not to look at you- its hilarious!

GiveHerHellFromUs · 18/01/2020 16:41

@cologne4711 the funniest ones are the super loud exhausts on shitty old Corsa's or Astra's and there's loads of noise but the car doesn't actually move. So pathetic.

lljkk · 18/01/2020 17:32

Oi, I nearly bought a Micra
People with big engines are the most likely tail-gating culprits ime.

PhoneLock · 18/01/2020 18:14

My car is modified, so is my husband's. They don't make any more noise than a standard car.

blueluce85 · 18/01/2020 18:38

@mamboitaliano would you please answer the question I have repeatedly seen above in lieu of a diagram /map as you cba.... How far from the roundabout, distancewise are you moving over?

I can't believe that you are moving over at a sensible time if you can still do 60 and others in excess of this.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 18/01/2020 19:04

It's the most basic modification so the first I thought of. The funny thing is, if one goes up our high street all the men look admiring and all the women look irritated.

Sorry to disappoint you. Kept the original exhaust for 13 years. When it had to be replaced I went for one with more power but about 11 decibels quieter. It’s not decatted, so perfectly legal on the roads.

People are usually surprised to see a woman driving it. And even more surprised when I leave them standing. Grin

QuestionableMouse · 18/01/2020 20:42

@ragged

There's a B road near me that I'll drive at 30 ish on. Gets used by horse riders and cyclists and doing 60 would be crazy.

Good grief. I think I've just met the only person outside the M25 that voted remain.
Hope the rest of the North is still talking to you.
Sadly, they all voted for Boris de Feckwit too so if I'm being made to jump off a cliff in a fortnight then, in the spirit of this thread, I'm doing it pedal to the metal Thelma & Louise like. Want a tow?

So you're dreaming about someone else getting a speeding ticket.
Interesting....hmm...🤔
Ok, I've got it. Someone in your life, a relative maybe....or a partner....is going too fast and needs to slow down!
Someone close to you with P.E. issues maybe? Don't worry, it's treatable.

TheTruthAboutLove · 18/01/2020 21:39

I tend to find along with the Micra’s and Note’s, the slowest drivers doing 30mph on a NSL road are the family cars. So Scenics, Picasso, Xsara and the like, the always always always go super slow on any given road. I can guarantee when behind one they will never drive within even 10mph of the limit.

lovelyupnorth · 19/01/2020 06:19

@ohdeardaddyibrokeitagain

This whole area voted remain where I live.

I’m good on a tow not sure the x4 would cope with my bus.

PhoneLock · 19/01/2020 10:00

Good grief. I think I've just met the only person outside the M25 that voted remain.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, three out of five people in Scotland voted to remain. That's a fair few people.

PhoneLock · 19/01/2020 10:02

Three out of every five people. Obvs.

Lizzie0869 · 19/01/2020 10:15

I live in Leeds, where the majority voted Remain as well. What a ridiculous comment. Hmm

Ginfordinner · 19/01/2020 10:36

70% of people in my area voted leave. DH and I are in the 30%.
