Harefield hospital, sex not gender

HeidiHoNeighbour · 16/01/2020 19:07

On patient registration form.

I left it blank, receptionist asked why and I replied what the difference between sex and gender?
Went into to see dr, he asked why it was blank and I asked again.
Neither answered the question.

Today I will be mostly identifying as a milk chocolate hobnob

Your objecting to them asking your biological sex? You do know that it effects treatment right?

Bloodybridget · 16/01/2020 19:09

Heidi watch out, you could literally get eaten! Grin

HeidiHoNeighbour · 16/01/2020 19:10

They have gender on form not sex.

OP posts:
Tonz · 16/01/2020 19:11

Isn’t that the same thing?

slipperywhensparticus · 16/01/2020 19:11

Your title is......misleading

Darkstar4855 · 16/01/2020 19:12

Are you saying you think it SHOULD BE ‘sex’ and not ‘gender’ or that it WAS ‘sex’ and you think it should be ‘gender’? It’s not clear from your post.

Given the pressure GPs are under I would imagine he had better things to do with his time than argue the toss with you tbh.

Darkstar4855 · 16/01/2020 19:12

Ah, cross post.

slipperywhensparticus · 16/01/2020 19:12

@Tonz

It really isnt okay, sex is observed at birth gender is a decision made on feelings intersex is a whole other story

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 16/01/2020 19:12

Isn’t that the same thing?

No

HeidiHoNeighbour · 16/01/2020 19:12

I swear I put “Harefield hospital, it’s sex not gender ffs”
Honest!!

Are you fucking serious?

cultkid · 16/01/2020 19:14

Who gives a shit? Don't be obstructive
Just tick the one which applies and honestly
If you have some sort of gender issue which is actually rare then you need some additional medical support
Were you using the nhs? Stop wasting their fucking time. They are so busy and over worked without having to reason with or justify themselves to some nutter who's come in to be treated

slipperywhensparticus · 16/01/2020 19:15

Personally I think gps SHOULD have biological reality first and feelings second because they need to know this information men and women boys and girls present differently medically and have different medical requirements linked to their born sex

HolyForkingShirtbaIIs · 16/01/2020 19:16

I'm Yoda gender.

You are or are not - there is no "identify".

cultkid · 16/01/2020 19:17

Why did you waste their time to discuss this

Zampa · 16/01/2020 19:17

They are so busy and over worked without having to reason with or justify themselves to some nutter who's come in to be treated

Agree with this which is why sex not gender should be recorded. What's the point in sending a trans-man an appointment about their prostate or a trans-woman an appointment about a smear test.

(BTW I'm not equating trans with nutters).

HeidiHoNeighbour · 16/01/2020 19:17

@cultkid
Why should I tick a box that doesn’t apply.
It’s sex not gender. It’s important

OP posts:
cultkid · 16/01/2020 19:20

Yes Zampa I totally agree with you on that! But then the op knew what they meant about gender so just tell them what genitals you have and move on. Don't understand why people get in such a tizz about these things
Presumably seeing someone at a hospital the op had an appointment already related to something they wanted treated or investigated. They knew what they meant.
I use the wrong words and terms often but people generally know what I mean and I just feel this lady was choosing a fight today at hospital

Maryann1975 · 16/01/2020 19:20

For some things I would argue that you shouldn’t be wasting nhs time over which box to tick, but like @slipperywhensparticus has said, surely the nhs need to know your biological sex to treat you correctly. If I said I was a male and talked about pelvic pain, presumably the doctors would think it was something different to if a woman complained about pelvic pain. (Best example I can think of).
So, yes, I agree, the form should ask for your sex not your gender.

underneaththeash · 16/01/2020 19:20

Gender should be recorded differently to sex in our times of daft.

cultkid · 16/01/2020 19:21

It's not important. You know what they meant. Most forms say gender not sex. This planet has gone crazy with the obsession of political and grammatical correctness. They were asking if you had a dick or not.. next!!

Maryann1975 · 16/01/2020 19:24

@cultkid Don't understand why people get in such a tizz about these things because I expect the people treating me medically to know the difference between a biological fact (so my sex) or something that I choose myself (my gender).

Hingeandbracket · 16/01/2020 19:25

Christ on a bike, the world has truly turned to shite now.

HeidiHoNeighbour · 16/01/2020 19:26

I wasn’t wasting nhs time. They asked why I hadn’t entered my gender and I asked what’s the difference between sex and gender.
It was at the end of my appointment as I was leaving the dr asked.

OP posts:
Hingeandbracket · 16/01/2020 19:27

The forms are probably left over from when we used to get in a moral panic about using the word sex and found gender a more gentile way of expressing the exact same thing.
