Am I noise-sensitive or something?

My son (7) is playing happily right now, but for some reason his game involves emitting a sudden, piercing yelp every few minutes, making me jump each time.

When my children are excited, (eg Christmas) their volume goes up and UP, and when really excited, they sort of roar incoherently and roll/race around.

My eldest (10) loves to sing, and likes to do it all the time- her latest jam is to add an opera twist to pop classics. Very loudly.

I find all of these noises, though they are noises of happiness, put me on edge. Take me to a kids' party and I feel like I'm going to lose my mind.

AIBU to find the noise of children a little, well, jarring?

If you’re bothered by it, why not tell them? Confused

Then tell him to stop and if he doesn't, tell him he'll have to play a different game Confused

Some people are a lot more sensitive to this kind of noise than others OP

I went to the doctors as I'm really sensitive to noise. I get really frustrated and agitated in noisy environments - even in the office at work if there's a lot of people chatting

I went to see an audiologist who confirmed I had a really low noise tolerance but there wasn't much they could do. They told me to use ear plugs when in noisy environments and in the shower/swimming etc and to avoid earphones

My ear drums did burst numerous times in my teens, though, so that's part of my issue

I bet your neighbours love you!

Thymelord · 16/01/2020 18:31

Tell them to zip it?!

Psychologika · 16/01/2020 18:38

Oh gosh, I thought this was going to be about neighbourhood kids! They're yours! Tell 'em to shush?!

Some children like shrieking and screaming very loudly. It's not socially acceptable to anyone I don't think. It's not the merry sound of children playing, it's a horrible noise which they are making because no one has told them to stop it.

Tell your DS not to yelp, and tell your DD to sing more quietly.
You won't destroy their creativity or curb their musical talent, you'll teach them to be a bit more considerate of those around them.

I don't let my kids screaming, screeching or shouting, neither outdoors or indoors. It's unnecessary and it would drive me nuts.

They are my kids, so they have to listen to me, thankfully.

I can't stand people whistling either.
