To quit

I started a new job 2 months ago. I hate it and I'm rubbish at it. How long should you give a new job? AIBU to quit already?

Maybe wait until you have something else lined up?

Spied · 16/01/2020 16:43

Are you still least out of the probationary period?
I wouldn't leave for at least a couple more months tbh. I'd want a decent(ish) reference to hand on to the job I had lined up and I doubt you'd get that if you left after such a short time.
Start job hunting ( covertly obv) and stick this out.

"I''d want a decent(ish) reference to hand on to the job I had lined up and I doubt you'd get that if you left after such a short time."
This is utter twaddle - no-one is going to give a detailed reference, glowing or otherwise these days, we are not in the 1950s.
Probationary periods are meaningless.

What does the contract say about notice? If it doesn't say, you give "reasonable" notice. After 2 months, probably 2 weeks would be ok.

MilkTray22 · 16/01/2020 17:02

8 weeks notice

Any more thoughts anyone? So disheartening to have gone through the whole thing of applying for the job, interview, getting the job, starting the job, meeting all the new people and trying really hard and then to be so bad at it and just fail at it and think, yeah will probably have to leave this job now and back to square one Sad Sad

I’ve left jobs that I wasn’t suited to within a few weeks so I could leave them off my CV. Always found something better!

Singlenotsingle · 19/01/2020 22:39

Discuss with them. Ask if you can agree a shorter notice period. You aren't going to be much use to them if your heart isn't in it, and they might be able to get a quick replacement anyway.

ArseholesOnToast · 19/01/2020 23:06

Can you afford to leave without something else lined up?

I think I’d focus on finding something else and tell any new employers that you are looking for a new job as your current one is a short term contract maybe.

I’d also try and negotiate a shorter notice period.

snackarella · 19/01/2020 23:48

Kind of depends what job it is?

Daftodil · 20/01/2020 09:12

Can you talk to your manager, explain where you think you are struggling and see if you can get additional training? Or if s/he agrees that you're struggling, they may be happy to reduce the notice period.

Good luck with the next job hunt Flowers
