Mums/Moms on MN!

I’m curious as to the amount of “moms” as opposed to mums or mams I see on MN posts. I’m vaguely aware there’s somewhere in the U.K. where people say mom and obviously a certain amount of American posters but seems to be tonnes of posts which have mom instead of mum/mam! Don’t want this to be some raging debate over what is correct just genuinely curious - make this a fun thread guys!

I'm in London, and my dd actually says "mommy" I much prefer it to mama lol. It's quite funny because she started out "yes mumeeeeeee" and now it's definitely "mommy" ? And she's only 20 months so I have no clue where she got that from

Stickybeaksid · 15/01/2020 17:03

Mom in parts of Ireland as well. It’s from the Irish word some people use for mum but it’s a very regional thing

FizzyIce · 15/01/2020 17:04

Mum here , a Londoner and so are my kids and dh so they all say mum too

chumbawum · 15/01/2020 17:04

Brum my here.
We say mom but spell it mum!

iklboo · 15/01/2020 17:04

Where I grew up it's usually 'mam' but I've always said 'mum' for some reason. Don't know why (no wonder I was called posh at school Grin).

andyjusthangingaround · 15/01/2020 17:05

Mum - Sonning, Berkshire

wowfudge · 15/01/2020 17:05

There are lots of US and Canada based posters who use mom on here.

FthisS · 15/01/2020 17:05

It's mam/mammy here (pembrokeshire). I've never heard anyone round here say mom.

Elopelo · 15/01/2020 17:08

Yep I'm from Brum, say 'Mom' but spell it as 'Mum' also some of us call it a 'sangwich'!

Icanflyhigh · 15/01/2020 17:12

It's not ALL of the Midlands though. I'm about as central as you can be and it is MUM here! Hmm

ClumsyFool · 15/01/2020 17:12

Someone said it’s a midlands thing but I think it’s more specific to West Midlands. East Mids is usually a mixture of either Mum or Mam.

Icanflyhigh · 15/01/2020 17:13

@ClumsyFool absolutely spot on! I'm East Mids and its Mum or Mam if you're more mining town based.

I say Mom and I'm Irish - the Irish for Mammy is Mama or Mamaí pronounced Momma or Mommy but with less of a drawl than the US version. Lots of Irish people say Mam. Don't hear Mum or Mummy here much.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 15/01/2020 17:22

I'm a yam yam from the black country (which is definitely NOT Birmingham) and its mom here, always.

Oh, and its written and said as 'mom' around here.

SirVixofVixHall · 15/01/2020 17:27

I agree that the Midlands Mom, is due to their accent, I imagine that is true of parts of Ireland too ?

BabyDubsEverywhere · 15/01/2020 17:36

I don't understand the accent thing, because in my accent (black country) mum and mom sound like different words, so I don't think it is that. And we write mom/mommy. I don't know anyone around here who would write mum/mummy.

loubieloo4 · 15/01/2020 17:41

Warwickshire here and it's mum or mummy.

SassenachWitch · 15/01/2020 17:47

I write and say Mom, I’m from Staffordshire.

Bannerpants · 15/01/2020 19:23

Im a brummie and I call my mother Mom.
My kids call me mom/momma.
We live in the north west though, and my kids have actually been told by teachers that they were spelling Mum incorrectly. Both of them have pointed out that we use Mom in our house, but the teachers still 'corrected' their work. 😠
I've actually written in their homework diaries that they call me Mom, and not to correct them.

KnifeAngel · 15/01/2020 19:27

West Midlands here and it's definitely Mum not Mom. I think that's only Birmingham way.

fairydustandpixies · 15/01/2020 19:30

I'm a brummy and it's always been 'mum'.

Chocolatemice · 15/01/2020 19:33

My lo’s a yam yam. When she started school I was promised they would not be teaching her Mom. They lied.Sad.
