Workman continuously knocking on my door at 7am

Lauriepop95 · 15/01/2020 08:19

I am probably being a bit U....

DD is 8 months and is in the middle of an awful cold, she fell to sleep at 1am last night after a lot of crying. We were both exhausted and I ended up cuddling her in my bed to sleep.

At 7am in the dot this morning, I hear a loud knock at the door, i jolted awake and checked the time. My parents are on holiday and I don’t have family that close where they’d turn up at 7 without telling me first. My baby’s father wouldn’t randomly turn up either. So confused as to who it is and since I’m a single woman with a baby I thought I’d just ignore it.

Well the knocks keep coming and I just can’t be bothered to get up as I’m still knackered. There must have been 10 seperate knockings now, spanning over 5 mins. DD started to wake up crying at this point.
Then the person at the door started constantly pressing the doorbell which is impossible to ignore as it’s so loud. I had to get DD up and went to the door.

At this point I’m worried it’s some sort of emergency as they’ve been constantly knocking.

Well open the door and it’s the plumber.

“Oh hi yeah you’re due a gas safety inspection and you haven’t answered our calls, been calling you loads”

Me- “I haven’t had any missed calls (this is truthful)”

Plumber- “well we have tried I think, anyway you need to get this booked in before 12th February”

Me- “right what about tomorrow then?”

Plumber- “oh you can’t book it through me, you’ll have to look the company up and give them a call”

Me- “so you’re here because?”

Plumber- “to remind you”

Anyway he went after that and I am now sitting with a crying DD who has only had 6 hours sleep but can’t get back to sleep as she’s over tired and ill.

AIBU to feel pissed off?

I just don’t like how he knocked constantly without letting up and then moved to the doorbell until I answered. He did t apologise either when I opened the door with crying snotty DD in my hip and rubbing my eyes

Well perhaps he shouldn’t have been knocking at 7am but if you’d done the sensible thing and answered the door, highly unusual behaviour for Mumsnet I know, then you could have avoided all this hassle and your baby wouldn’t have been disturbed.

Roundtoedshoes · 15/01/2020 10:25

I would complain in writing about this incident. He was rude and unreasonably early. A card through the door would have sufficed. What if you had actually been at work - is it good use of his working hours to bang on doors? No! The company sound crap though so not sure it will get you anywhere.

berlinbabylon · 15/01/2020 10:26

How would the baby not have been disturbed? It only takes one knock to wake people up.

And I wouldn't open the door at 7am! As I live in a house, I'd probably lean out of an upstairs window and ask them what they want if they were that insistent.

Lauriepop95 · 15/01/2020 10:26

@AlexaAmbidextra

DD was in my bed last night and can crawl so I couldn’t go down to answer the door without taking her incase she woke up and crawled off the bed whilst I was downstairs

7am is too early. And only someone rude and entitled keeps knocking/ringing to that extent, if there's no emergency.

TheVanguardSix · 15/01/2020 10:29

Obviously your landlord's not been responding to their calls. This is on your landlord, OP, to sort out an inspection (this has probably been mentioned upthread. Sorry). 7am is an obnoxious time to knock though.

Call your landlord.

SonjaMorgan · 15/01/2020 10:34

@Lauriepop95 this sounds very odd, why would a plumber be reminding people of appointment times. Please make sure you keep all windows and doors locked.

I hope your DD is feeling better soon.

Urkiddingright · 15/01/2020 10:36

That’s way too early and absolutely ridiculous. The fact he kept continuously knocking then resorted to ringing the doorbell at 7am is such a strange thing to do. Most people would only do this if it were an absolute emergency...

Frenchw1fe · 15/01/2020 10:37

Well he could have knocked your door after the inspection at 7.30, so nearer 8am. He’s an idiot.

IntermittentParps · 15/01/2020 10:38

I think someone their end has been lying and has actually forgotten to contact me but to avoid getting in trouble had lied and said they had called me daily for the last few weeks.
This absolutely. Write to complain!

JasonPollack · 15/01/2020 10:56

@andyjusthangingaround U OK hun?

andyjusthangingaround · 15/01/2020 13:25

@JasonPollack - Grin shouldnt read idiot posts now should I? Sometimes I wonder can someone be so stupid or is the post a wind up...
I realised a long time ago, that Brain is not a standard feature any more... still!

Lauriepop95 · 15/01/2020 13:32

@andyjusthangingaround

Not sure what the point of your comments are other than to belittle me

OP posts:
andyjusthangingaround · 15/01/2020 13:39

@Laurie - glad it got you thinking and hopefully it helps next time when a similar situation happens.
I had no intention of belittling you

Rosebel · 15/01/2020 13:43

Did you check they had the right phone number for you? I know I've forgotten to update companies with my number sometimes.

Rosebel · 15/01/2020 13:45

Sorry I see they did. They clearly lying so as not to get in to trouble

Thestrangestthing · 15/01/2020 13:46

I feel furious for you OP, he would have got a right mouthful from me.

Thestrangestthing · 15/01/2020 13:53

andyjusthangingaround I am assuming you are the plumber that called at the OPs house this morning, yes? I think you owe the OP an apology for incessantly chapping her door at such an unsociable hour in the morning, no you weren't saving her ass.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 15/01/2020 13:57

This is why after DS we opted to get a smart doorbell camera thing. I can see anyone knocking at the door from my phone & can tell them to piss off if it's an ungodly hour. I can also turn off the doorbell. It's fabulous I strongly recommend it.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 15/01/2020 14:02

Andyjusthangingaround
You are utterly mad. I'm a morning person and even I wouldn't dream of knocking on someone's door at 7am.

A gas safety check is presumably a routine job. It can wait until normal working hours.

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 15/01/2020 14:14

I think someone their end has been lying and has actually forgotten to contact me but to avoid getting in trouble had lied and said they had called me daily for the last few weeks.

I had this the other way round. I needed someone to come and look at my boiler and contacted the agency. They emailed back to say they had put the job through to the engineer and if I wanted to contact him direct, his number was X..... Except they didn't. So after 2 days of me sitting in a freezing flat, a very confused engineer replied to my texts/voice messages. The agency hadn't done a thing, he had no idea that he was supposed to come and fix my boiler.

Fair play to him, he was round next day.

Newfloorlamp · 15/01/2020 14:19

@Andyjusthangingaround it's rude to keep knocking and constantly press the doorbell, once is enough. The guy was inconsiderate and thoughtless. The OP is an adult and it's her choice to not answer if it's not convenient. Quite right to put hers and baby's needs above random guy at the door's convenience. If OP rents she has the right to quiet enjoyment of her home and even the landlord needs to make an appointment, no one should be showing up at anyone's door and keep knocking and ringing until they answer that's unnecessary and entitled to harass someone at home like that.

lottiegarbanzo · 15/01/2020 15:09

I take it @andyjusthangingaround was the plumber - or is just one more arsey mediocrity who likes to barge into women's lives and try to boss them around.

We've almost all been tenants, many of us have been landlords. We all know that arranging the gas safety inspection is a simple admin task for the landlord, resulting in a regular appointment, during working hours. No fuss, no drama. No 'asses' to be saved.

TooManyPaws · 15/01/2020 15:30

Having worked scheduling gas safety checks for a social landlord, no, it's not normal. Our gas technicians work from 8 till 4 unless on emergency call. At no time would we be expecting anyone to be answering the door at 7am unless they were expecting an emergency call out. We do put notes through doors though. Definitely out of order.

JasonPollack · 15/01/2020 19:23

@andyjusthangingaround I don't think you've made anyone think love, apart from "what a wanker".
