I’d like to reduce my hours and do something different working from home. Everything I see looks like a scam.
Tell me your happy/horror stories.

I would love a wfh job as well to fit around my zero hour contract. Im skint but need to keep 0 hour job as i want to ttc in a year or so. Although i am creative i can write and make stuff and paint im not business minded and wouldnt know how to be self employed. I would even do cleaning jobs.

Oblomov20 · 16/01/2020 20:46

Reading with interest. I have never wfh. I do accounts, so could, but no company has ever let me.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 16/01/2020 20:51

I am home based. I work in business development for a charity. I can also work from one of our many offices if I choose to. I'm going into an office tomorrow and will come home around lunch time.

It's brilliant. It has helped my career, not hindered it.

IME, the key is getting yourself established first. I've worked for the organisation for over a decade and been in this role for around 3 years so far. The opportunity wouldn't have been available as a new starter.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 16/01/2020 20:54

My role is full time. I typically work from 8am - 4pm but can manage my own diary. As long as I'm around for scheduled meetings and everything is completed, I can pop out whenever during the day. I often work in the evening if I want to do something during the day.

There have been discussions in the past that parents should be prioritised for these roles. Thankfully, the organisation doesn't work like that.

whostoletheeyeoutyourteddybear · 16/01/2020 21:16

I work in education and mental health. I work from home on the days I don't have face to face students.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 16/01/2020 21:17

I work in Local Government. I can work from home but actually like being in the office, which is only 5 miles from home anyway so I am lucky. More important for me is flexible working rather than home working. I can take a long lunchbreak to do a gym class or go shopping, and if I work longer Monday to Thursday I can leave early Friday, I would hate to be tied to set hours.

louise5754 · 16/01/2020 21:29

I've been looking for a work from home job for years. I have lots of health issues. I've not worked for so long. I've started selling BathBombs: Bath Jelly etc online as I have no qualifications to actually do anything else.

I’m self employed and work from home. Not well paid.
Really what you can do depends on your skill set/previous work experience. I am a proofreader and translator. This works very well from home

Havana7 · 16/01/2020 21:38

Me and my DP both work from home as different types of Account Managers for companies who have offices to far for us to travel too

I'm a software developer and it tends to be a very flexible industry. Can do just as much wfh than in the office. It's a massive shame there's not more women doing it, it's like the perfect job for a mum who wants to get back into work!

ASundayWellSpent · 16/01/2020 21:56

I run my own one man show business from home. It can be done and it is profitable but needs a lot of self- discipline, concentration and time management. I end up spending too much time doing house things, trying to rectify that this year!

Alwaysoverthinkingit34 · 16/01/2020 22:00

I work from home 40% of my hours for a large finance company. They employ around 3000 staff locally and we all get to do it. My department can also work their hours any time between 6am and 9pm so very flexible. I really enjoy working from home :)

Claireusborne · 16/01/2020 22:17

I joined Usborne Books for this very reason and I love it.
I work part time now and I have more time with my kids while working on usborne of an evening.

PineappleDanish · 16/01/2020 22:23

That's not a job. It's a MLM pyramid scheme. Immoral, corrupt business model which should be banned.

ThisMumisaMan · 16/01/2020 22:51

I work(ed) (currently taking time out for I'll health, 4 years so far and counting) from home for the last 15 years as I work in robotics and and being a real niche industry it has a massive skills and experience shortage. So companies either take you on the terms you dictate, or keep trying to fill a vacancy!

Carpedimum · 16/01/2020 22:56

My role supports 3 separate ‘offices’ in the U.K. and can really be done from anywhere with a good WiFi connection. Which location I work in is very flexible and I have a great deal of autonomy about where/when etc. I do have a permanent desk in my ‘home’ site though I choose to WFH several days a week. Sometimes because I’ve got a personal appointment & can still put in at least 7.5hrs easily. Sometimes because I need to not be disturbed (the office is open plan & distracting). Today I was in London for meetings = long day so tomorrow I will stay at home & do 6-7 hrs then I’m done & my weekend will start immediately. I think I’ve built up a lot of trust with my boss because it would be very quickly apparent if I wasn’t getting the job done. I’d be very unhappy if I wasn’t able to work like this; I loathe sitting in traffic when I could be working & my mental health would suffer if I had to go into the office everyday.

Florin · 16/01/2020 23:12

I work from home in a ‘proper’ job no mlm. I can pick when I work apart from a few set meetings each month. It’s awesome I am at every sports match around the county each week, each school play etc but can fit in work too, in the school holidays I get up early to get going so have plenty of time with my child too so best of both worlds.

danadas · 16/01/2020 23:25

I am a Civil Servant and work from home anywhere between 3 and 5 days a week. I do have a bitch of a commute to London the days that I am not at home but flexible working means I manage my time and my London days as I wish.

The downside is that I feel like I am constantly working as the workload is massive and deadlines constant. Benefits by far outweigh this though.

TimeForTeaTime · 16/01/2020 23:42

I have been working from home just over 2 years and love it. I provide customer support for an online website and as long as I have my laptop and WiFi I can work from a anywhere.
We work set hours a day and as long as they are completed by 10pm they don't mind when we do them.
I spent this morning at fitness classes, shops, had lunch at home, worked couple of hours before picking kids up, then finished rest of my hours once kids went to bed.
The job was advertised as working from home abs everyone in my team all work from home apart from the managers that are office based.
I use our messaging system that we need for work to chat to my team as we get on really well so I don't feel lonely,
I find it productive as I watch Netflix, box set, make personal calls etc whilst working.
The managers are super relaxed and very flexible.

eatyourcake · 17/01/2020 00:15

I've been working from home as a graphic designer for 1.5yrs, after working in central London for 10 years, I do love the freedom and calm, but I am lonely, get half the money I made before and self discipline is a problem for me. I really miss a fun creative office (but don't miss a London rush hour). Trapped!

DH is in a senior sales role, highly self-disciplined and has lots of travel mixed with working from home, also maybe a day per week in the office. He loves it.

eatyourcake · 17/01/2020 00:24

Summatsummit

Sounds like a desk in a fun co-working space. I tried it, but can't afford it long term, also all the good ones are too far away from me :(

Toomuchtrouble4me · 17/01/2020 01:43

My granny used to paint faces on bid wooden beads to be used for doll and soldier heads, she could do all different expressions with a flick of the brush to make us laugh. I wish I’d kept some.

Icanflyhigh · 17/01/2020 01:52

I work from home, just admin stuff, but I love the variety and the job security as its local government based.
