to think LinkedIn is a pile of old shite?

I spend a fair bit of time on LinkedIn for work and I've decided it's bollocks.

Here's why:

  • the endless, smug and almost certainly made-up stories of business influencers imparting frankly illogical amounts of largesse on imaginary lowly underlings then saying "agree?". Also abundance of said influencers who apparently used to live in a hole in a field and now run a Fortune 500 company #grateful #hardworkpaysoff
  • people who list their working day hour by hour, which always starts on an exercise bike at 5am
  • hilariously informal ill-judged cold approaches "Hi Changer! I just wanted to reach out to yourself ( Crown Envy )to offer you [service my company also supplies, only we do it at higher level]
  • MLMs
  • the IT managers who live 4000 miles away who send you unreciprocated "hi" "hi" "hi huni" "hi" over the course of seven months.
  • the constant insincere use of everyone by the word "exciting" - "I just had such an EXCITING day of meetings", "brainstorming with my colleagues is so EXCITING", "We've got some really EXCITING news coming soon"! No one's work is that exciting.

AIBAOG (am I being an old grump?) Grin

Haha, I'm glad you posted this. I went on there today and thought the same. People are so smug about, well, just doing their job. Recruiters have advised me to build my profile on Linked In as it'll help with job applications, but I honestly don't care enough.

RunningNinja79 · 14/01/2020 20:51

I haven't the foggiest how to use it. I joined years ago and get the odd emails, but I've not been on since first signing up (we're talking a good 5-6 years ago). I just couldn't find my way about.

pandawandaa · 14/01/2020 21:23

Thanks @Justanotherlurker you're right. I'm in finance. Such sad times for me having to join this malarkey! Once upon a time I'd roll into a recruitment office for a coffee. Now?

Probably instance rejection if the filter isn't on my LinkedIn picture 😂

TheTruthAboutLove · 14/01/2020 21:28

People are so so fake on it!

The constant stream of recruitment consultants who claim they are different from any other recruitment consultant, thinking that David Brent is something to strive to be. They are the worst people on LinkedIn because I know it’s all fake, it always is with consultants.
The try hard bloke at a recruitment agency to posts ‘witty work banter’ but it doesn’t get any likes as it’s just inane rubbish seeking engagement.
The whole virtue signalling rubbish on there, it is horrific.

And finally, worst of all is that Tutti Recruitti page. One bloke who has a parody LinkedIn company page with fake characters that he posts as in this fake agency. Slates the agency Hays all day every day and wonders why his page gets banned. If you’ve never seen it take a look, it’s honestly cringeworthy. The bloke must be doing well out of being fake though as he quit his job and posts for likes constantly.

Social networks are what you make them. I stopped using Facebook because I felt obliged to have everyone I've ever met on there or face an inquest about why I'd unfriended them, LinkedIn isn't quite the same though. Add people that you actually want to hear from and get rid of the ones you don't, it isn't the platform for nonsense. It's for your career and if you use it well it's useful.

Namestranger · 14/01/2020 21:30

Yeah Tutti Recruiti is stupid. Mike Winner used to be funny though.

TheTruthAboutLove · 14/01/2020 21:30

Like this sort of absolute rubbish. Everyone knows it didn’t happen as no agency would dare speak to a possible client like that.

to think LinkedIn is a pile of old shite?
TheTruthAboutLove · 14/01/2020 21:33

Mike Winnet is one of the good guys, I actually really like him and his posts. At least he’s honest and he knows how fake LinkedIn is and parodies the posts.
The whole #LinkedInBannerBoy thing is a load of rubbish by him though, going all Karl Pilkington and using the guy as a front for silly activities.

I still don’t get how come people don’t see through the Tutti Recrutti posts of ‘If this gets 150 likes Shiela can go home at 7pm’. I know it’s to get engagement but people need to see through it and how ridiculous it is!

j712adrian · 14/01/2020 22:24

It's very representative of the state of work.

Full of boring fuckers.

kittiesattack · 14/01/2020 22:40

I use it also every day for work. And I do sometimes post content but that is generally because I am in recruitment and my target audience is small so need to maintain my presence. Before this I didn't ever post on it.

blueshoes · 14/01/2020 22:41

OP, I don't get any of what you are talking about. LinkedIn is where many recruiters find me and get in touch. I do get endorsements from people I have never met and recruiters wanting to connect so they can mine my contacts (I never accept). Also get random requests and endorsements which I ignore.

I just find LinkedIn very clunky. For example, the messaging/notification/comments is confusing and I am not sure how to reply or what I am seeing. It is ancient tech.

MairzyDoats · 17/01/2020 12:33

@j712adrian - nail on head!! Grin Grin Grin

SVRT19674 · 17/01/2020 12:36

Well, I got my current job through Linkedin!

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/01/2020 12:38

I have to be on it, but basically ignore it.

When I first joined I was stunned by the influx of jobs I was being offered. Trouble was they were all in India and for what seemed to be call centres.

I live in the UK and have no call centre experience whatsoever.

DGRossetti · 17/01/2020 12:39

Do they allow you to record dual nationality yet ? I enquired about 5 years ago and they replied they were working on it.

BigFatBloomers · 17/01/2020 12:49

If you have to be on it but are reticent, this free course is a good one to get your profile in shape
