Bung a Bob for a Big Ben Bong

I mean what the actual Fuck?

Apparently it'll cost half a million pounds to get Big Ben to ring to mark Brexit.

Is ANYONE planning to donate their hard earned cash in support of this ridiculous venture?

How about if we set off the air raid sirens instead?

CakeandCustard28 · 14/01/2020 11:56

Should take the money out of the MPs wages, they want it to chime so they should pay. I don’t think anyone else really gives a flying monkey if it chimes or not.

MetalMidget · 14/01/2020 12:00

Things I'd be happy to pay extra for:

The NHS
Education
More support for the vulnerable and disabled
More support for those in poverty
Better public transport

Things that can get in the sea as far as I'm concerned:

Brexit festival
A bell tower in London

BarkandCheese · 14/01/2020 12:02

This is ridiculous, whatever your feelings on Brexit private citizens shouldn’t be able to have Big Ben rung just by paying for it, it’s not like taking out an announcement in the local paper.

willothewispa · 14/01/2020 12:02

How about if we set off the air raid sirens instead?

The nhs couldn't afford the extra cost of doing that !

SerendipityJane · 14/01/2020 12:08

I don't think you grasp how momentous Jan 31st is. When historians look back, they will declare it even more important than July 4th 1776. Even more earth shattering than 14th July 1789. In fact, it's probably an understatement to say that Brexit will overtake the Apollo missions as the high water mark of humans rising to a challenge and succeeding.

willothewispa · 14/01/2020 12:12

. In fact, it's probably an understatement to say that Brexit will overtake the Apollo missions as the high water mark of humans rising to a challenge and succeeding.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've read in years.

yolofish · 14/01/2020 12:12

serendipity do I detect just the tiniest note of sarcasm there?! Grin

yolofish · 14/01/2020 12:13

ooh marvellous x post with willo!

Mockers2020Vision · 14/01/2020 12:15

How many people under fifty know what a 'Bob' is?

Five million 5ps from the 17 million. No problem.

Equanimitas · 14/01/2020 12:16

The whole Brexit nonsense has cost us billions. It's not even as if it's the cause for celebration that the Brexiteers think it is, given that we will still be subject to EU rules but will no longer have any power to influence them. Maybe the bell should be run in mourning for our entry into the status of vassal country?

SoupDragon · 14/01/2020 12:17

That's the most ridiculous thing I've read in years.

The most ridiculous think I've read in years is that someone took that seriously 😂😂

TheMemoryLingers · 14/01/2020 12:17

I'd rather it had bonged properly at the New Year. CCL about it bonging for Brexit.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 14/01/2020 12:19

@Equanimitas it's gonna cost half a mill whether they ring it in celebration or mourning...

Well it's not, actually, because they're not ringing it.

TheMemoryLingers · 14/01/2020 12:20

How many people under fifty know what a 'Bob' is?

I do as will anyone who has read 20th century adult British novels published before 1971.

Two tanners make a bob Grin.

Mockers2020Vision · 14/01/2020 12:24

Toss a tanner for transport

Fling a florin for foreign affairs

Sling a shilling for schools

Wiltinglillies · 14/01/2020 12:27

SerendipityJane please keep posting. Grin

I do though think, Brexit is momentous and do think people will regard the start of Brexit as a turning point in the status/strength/fortune of this rather little country. Sadly, not for the better.

Cant they play a recording?

onalongsabbatical · 14/01/2020 12:45

Farage should cough up surely? And little Mark Francois, and Bill Cash, and Jacob Grease-Bog. That shower. They are the ones that wanted it. They can pay for any celebrations.
Bastards. Etc. Not enough swearing in my brain for what I think of them, so I'd better not even start, you'll still be reading my post next week...

SoupDragon · 14/01/2020 12:55

I'm prepared to have a go at playing the chimes on a glockenspiel. I'd only charge £50k.

Catsingangs · 14/01/2020 13:08

We could just bong Francois' empty head instead.
I have a mallet and I'd gladly do it.

Jack7 · 14/01/2020 13:26

I'm giving £1k... it is a big day, we should celebrate it whether we voted for it or not, it's a very big change and an important moment in history. I hope enough money is raised.

Equanimitas · 14/01/2020 13:30

Seriously, @Jack7? You really can't think of anything better to do with £1K?

Doesn't it occur to you that you are being taken as a mug by the likes of Johnson and Francois? If they're so keen on this, they could fund it themselves.

Mockers2020Vision · 14/01/2020 13:33

We could just bong Francois' empty head instead.

Or get Francois to headbutt the bell?

Jack7 - there's a bridge I could sell you.

acatcalledjohn · 14/01/2020 13:33

If we have £350m extra for the NHS from leaving the EU surely they government can spare £500k of that to ring a fucking bell?

No?
