For not wanting to commute 3-4 hours on the bus a day, two days a week for £200 at the end of the month?

Cleaning job through an agency, 5 hours per week over two days. 2.5 hours per shift. Pay is £200 per month. I dont drive so have to spend between 90 mins and 2 hours travelling on busses (with changes) each way but I didn't know that until I had been given the job and subsequently sent the address. It was miles away but I thought ok well it gets me out and about.

Financially, not much incentive but the purpose of looking for a job was more about getting me out the house. I think I have PND.

I don't need the money desperately, I'm a SAHM with a toddler and a baby and OH earns enough to keep us in the green (an agreement reached between us when we planned the kids) I just thought it would be good to have a bit of time away from the children and i could use the £200 on something nice to treat myself.

Today was shift number two and the second bus took even longer than normal, It was late and for some reason unbeknownst to me terminated miles away from its destination so we had to get off. I was stood in the wind and rain at a bus stop in the middle of nowhere waiting for the next bus to come which wasn't due for another 15 minutes and I was already late.

I got pissed off, a bit upset and had a "fuck this" moment and stormed across the road to wait for the other bus home.

I've decided I won't be returning and will sheepishly explain why, to the agency.

AIBU? Would you do this?

I would much rather do it in one day personally but it isn't an option as the contract is for two days a week, Monday's and Thursdays

It's a large open plan office inc kitchenette, some side offices, downstairs toilets and foyer, a few offices downstairs and then across the way is another smaller office, kitchen and toilets

The contractor is extremely fussy aswell so I couldn't see her agreeing to just one day per week as she's very spic and span. There was a complaint on my first day that finger prints (not mine) were left on one of the office telephones Confused

Hopefully there is a better opportunity closer to home. This doesn't seem worth it for you.

Have you priced up a cab for one way to save time?

Evycanary · 14/01/2020 13:55

Yes unfortunately a cab is going to cost me nigh on £30 using uber if not more, it's very far away. I could have avoided all of this by being practical and refusing the job when I was given the address but I was so excited to have something to do I probably would have agreed to go anywhere in the moment.

Somebody from the agency has kindly offered to take me in this evening so I'm going to go and do it tonight but stand firm about it not being feasible for me going forward

I think YABU to no-show. You dropped the client and the agency in it. I think you'll have hurt your chances of future work. If you don't want to do a job, then even if you only just started, I say in most cases it's more sensible to give reasonable notice.

I managed to get a very flexible job doing something I was really interested in for the NHS very locally. 5 hours per week, well paid for the time involved (about double what you’re getting for the cleaning job). Did it for two years then tried to quit but they’ve given me a few months off to sort some stuff out and now I’m going back.

YANBU for not doing this- I wouldn’t. Look for something else that’s more manageable.

If you're new to your area, don't particularly need the money and your dc are small, look to establish yourself with a support network first and do your driving lessons as pp have said. for e.g., look for local playgroups and help out setting up/tidying away - if they need committee members then volunteer. I was playgroup committee secretary while my dc were small and when i was back applying for jobs and had no idea what to put wrt my personal statement, I used that as an example of experience of running email lists and taking minutes. I was also a keyholder for the building, so this showed trustworthiness etc, which if you're wanting to recommend yourself as a cleaner in people's homes is worth doing. Cashing up at the end of the session on 'my' days = experience of handling money and keeping accurate records etc. Plus i got to make friends - my dc are older now but i still have nights out with the women friends i made when all our dc were small.
