Hi Guys

I am new to mums net so I decided to join and start a thread in hope of some guidance and advice. I currently live in Birmingham with my partner and 4 year old son. Both me and my partner studied at university in Birmingham hence why we stayed here.

My partner family live in London obviously London is to expensive so my next option is moving to Northampton Briar Hill however I am hesitant about moving here because I have heard some bad things about Northampton however being under an hour away by train to London is ideal because this means my son can see his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins and also means that more doors will open and there will be more support is there anybody on here who lives in Northampton? Or even know somebody who does?

thank you

It’s not that expensive to commute in to London from Northampton compared to Birmingham prices are quite high to get into London and that’s not including a return ticket, I used to commute three days a week from London to Birmingham when I was studying my degree so commuting from Northampton to London isn’t anything to me as it’s under and hour to get to London Euston whereas it used to take me 2hours maybe abit more to get in to Birmingham but I agree with what you are saying it’s better to secure a job in London rather then taking the risk of moving and then not landing a job this is why I am choosing to put the whole move on pause

But in Birmingham wouldn’t the idea be to get a Birmingham job?

Commuting with a DC is a lot harder than before DC IME.

I’ve tried looking for jobs in Birmingham but haven’t had much luck maybe I need to try harder, i agree it is harder commuting with a child but when I went back to uni I was commuting at the time when my son was only one years old and was juggling my assignments and exams ontop of looking after him and commuting and doing my driving theory test revision lol so i feel it wouldn’t be such a challenge for me but Birmingham is a great city I just feel I’m not giving it a chance and at the moment I am currently dealing with depression and anxiety so my mindset right now is not 100%.

My son school is great since starting reception the school have put him on band 6 reading books he’s been reading since he was three years old they have really encouraged him and pushed him I don’t want to take that away from him and move him to another school in a not so good area and it become a problem.

So that’s good: you like your current location and school, and your DC is doing well there too.

You’d like a new job, and Birmingham is pretty good for jobs. You’ve had some knockbacks and not got one - YET!

You’ve also got MH issues which can make things tricky, can work on that too.

There’s good media opportunities in Birmingham for media. Try out Birmingham Live. I’m a journalist and know a few people who work there.

Yeah I will get searching and hopefully get things sorted thank you

Youngmum25 · 15/01/2020 10:11

Ohh thank you so much will look in to that

Media jobs in London are terrifically competitive and relatively poorly paid. There are hordes of child free 23 yr olds queuing up to work long hours for 25k and live in a cheap shared house etc. The extremely high cost of living means you would be much much better off staying in Birmingham.
