To think a valentines lunch is wrong at a primary school

Had an email from dd school yesterday saying that they are having a special menu on Valentine's Day with the details of the menu displayed in a love heart.

AIBU to think Valentine's Day doesn't need to be 'celebrated' at school, especially primary. Also why more commercialism ??

Wow never heard of that, I wouldn’t like it either.

Frenchw1fe · 11/01/2020 22:36

Assuming it's a primary. Seems unnecessary to me but perhaps they're focusing on being nice to each other.

ByeMF · 11/01/2020 22:36

YANBU. For some reason my kids' primary also had a fake wedding every year. Teach kids to think and be independent. You don't need this tosh.

It'll be the catering company trying to drum up business. Unless the school are actually encouraging cards or something, I'd leave it.

NoFun21 · 11/01/2020 22:38

Wrong.

Bit random

I'm pretty sure DC1 did some craft thing for valentine's day once in Y1 - it was just a big heart for me and DH so obviously wasn't associated with romance. Unnecessary sure but not a big deal.

Differentcorner · 11/01/2020 22:43

Yes totally unnecessary I’d add nursery graduation ceremonies , Halloween parties etc to this list too. All in good time...

UndertheCedartree · 11/01/2020 22:47

If the kids enjoy it, why not?

Incidentally, I don't think following special days has to be about comercialism. I used to do a lot of things with my ASD DS around special days, festivals etc as it helped him understand the passing year (I've not explained that very well) - it sort of kept him grounded. On Valentine's Day one of the things we did was make paper hearts for each family member and write reasons we loved them on it.

Hideous

Papergirl1968 · 11/01/2020 22:55

Agree, my dds’ primary school held a valentines disco. They went of course, but I’d have preferred a normal disco.
Just made me feel uncomfortable, without really knowing why. I think I’d just prefer them not to be encouraged to think in terms of romance and “fancying” each other at primary school age.

Bollockingfuck · 11/01/2020 23:04

We do a valentines theme at the playgroup I run. The children may well see items in the shops so will know there is some kind of occasion on the calendar - obviously we just use it as an opportunity to talk about people (ie family members) we love.

For some reason my kids' primary also had a fake wedding every year.

My kids primary school introduced this between my two (daughter missed it but it emerged by the time son was at the top end). Trotted them off to church for the 'ceremony' and everything.

Creepy and weird doesn't even begin to cover it. My boy was 'sick' on the day in question, I found the whole thing beyond inappropriate.
