Free internal insulation

Been given free first time central heating but before the company are able to do this we have to have internal insulation carried out.

I am so worried as I have read up on what should happen but the workmen have come out and installed the wooden beams over the skirting boards and half way over the door frames. In the beginning they wanted to start further down the now flush wall because the door frames are flush to the wall, I questioned this and said I have read up and any wall left would then be a cold spot and cause damp, worryingly he has now agreed with me and continued to jut the beams out over the existing doorframe, this is my first home with a mortgage and we bought it in an old state and are replacing everything over the next few years as and when we have the money to do so.

The two workmen who get dropped off here do not speak great English so I can't question them as much as I would like. They have left the property tonight with two room inhabitable, mess all over and tissue with blood on in the bathroom.

I am in such a worried state I need some opinions from someone who knows about this work

I'd rather save than have free work we need to rectify after its been done.. opinions would be very much appreciated

If it’s an old house, installing anything that prevents you from seeing the internal faces of the external walls is a no from me, this will prevent you from seeing evidence of damp, cracking and reduces the internal area of the rooms. Why would you have this done? Which “free” scheme are you using? Have you checked with you mortgage company that it’s approved by them?

They are called Howarth Green Deal, it's a 1930s property with solid walls and external rendering, it's a government scheme to reduce carbon emissions, we only have old gas heaters in some rooms and in order for us to have the free first time central heating they said we have to have the internal wall insulation and new loft insulation to pass with the building inspector

Could you post a picture. Why do you need internal insulation in order to get central heating? Who is offering the free central heating? Sounds all very iffy to me. I agree you need loft insulation but why on the walls?

bloated1977 · 12/01/2020 15:17

Just had a quick Google. They aren't 'free' You end up paying back more for your gas and electricity as it appears you've agreed to some kind of loan. So yes there's no outlay but you've got to pay the cost back through your monthly bill. I'd be inclined to tell them to stop immediately until you know what you've actually agreed to!!

Is it Howarth or Haworth? Bradford area?

I would do what @bloated1977
Not only to learn what you sign up for as it is a loan, but also to check the company. Haworth Green Deal LTD was struck off. It was a compulsory strike off.

AllergicToAMop · 12/01/2020 16:09

And I haven't found them here too gdorb.decc.gov.uk/find-a-green-deal-supplier/?DECC=true

When you say you've been given free first time central heating OP, how did this come about? Did you go looking for someone to carry out the work and did you approach these contractors, or did someone knock on your door / out a flyer through and you decided to take them up on the offer?

picklemepopcorn · 12/01/2020 16:35

I've checked out the reviews- several glowing reviews (perhaps not genuine) and a couple of stinkers.

mumwon · 12/01/2020 16:40

I always check bad reviews & see if their is a similar criticism

picklemepopcorn · 12/01/2020 16:46

@pigletjohn knows everything- might be able to point you to how to check if they are 'qualified' to offer this, and who to complain to.

Have to say, it sounds well dodgy to me but I've no experience or knowledge.
