DH’s cough is driving me mad

DH has had a persistent cough since the week before Christmas. He’s coughing almost all the time and it’s not getting any better.

He’s bought some cough medicine which is totally useless. I’ve been begging him to go to the doctor but he never gets round to it and accuses me of nagging.

He drinks four nights a week - I think he should quit completely until the cough has cleared up, just in case it’s something to with the alcohol, but he hasn’t.

Honestly the noise is doing my head in and I can’t take it much more. I’m 28 weeks pregnant and wanted him to sort it out before the baby gets here, but it seems like that’s not going to happen.

He also keeps me awake at night as I can hear him coughing next door when I’m in bed and he’s watching telly (we’re in a flat and the bedroom is next to the lounge).

My head hurts from it all and I’m starting to feel claustrophobic and fed up in our home. I know my constant nagging is probably getting to him but what else can I do?!!

AIBU?

I actually partly went to get the medicine and also because I could get half an hour’s peace from the feckin’ cough!

Mines just clearing up now after 8 weeks, there’s been lots of lingering nasty coughs around this winter.

LemonPrism · 11/01/2020 21:57

It's probably a goiter and nothing to do with the booze. Coughing is so annoying, I know, my mums had a cough for two yearsAngry

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 11/01/2020 21:58

I've had the cough for weeks, then lost my voice, followed by swollen glands, sore chest, short of breath and finally back pain in my lungs when I'm breathing in.
I gave in and went to the Gp on Friday morning before work expecting a cough bottle or antibiotics but I was sent straight to a&e for a chest x-ray, bloods and a heart trace. The NHS was fabulous but I've just to ride it out, everything was clear. Inhalers and steroids for the week ahead, but it is worth getting checked out.

They probably thought you had TB!

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/01/2020 22:03

I had a terrible cough. It was getting on my nerves.

I went to the out of hours gp and I had a chest infection.

Week on antibiotics cleared my cough but left me feeling really shit.

Maybe I’m being ignorant here, but a relative who had asthma had wheezing and asthma attacks. If DH has developed asthma wouldn’t he have that too?

I’ve never had wheezing or an asthma attack in my life but was diagnosed with asthma after doing some breathing tests. The reason for the tests was a persistent cough that I just couldn’t shake!

Like a PP I know someone whose husband was diagnosed with pneumonia after coughing for a while.

It might not be anything much, but breathing is essential so he shouldn’t take it lightly!

Viral coughs linger for weeks. Drs are inundated with people turning up. This time of year we used to have cold weather to kill off bugs. The milder winters are seeing them spread so quickly.

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/01/2020 22:06

Should add my voice hasn’t returned since Christmas Eve

Geekster1963 · 11/01/2020 22:12

Every time my DH gets a cold he gets a cough that lasts for up to two months afterwards. I know he can’t help it but it drives me mad. You have my sympathies OP.

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/01/2020 22:15

Can I ask does your dh still have his tonsils.

Mine goes to a chest infection after every cold and a persistent cough

Plumbus · 11/01/2020 22:42

Is he (or has he been) a smoker?

He should see a GP.

Notcontent · 11/01/2020 22:47

He needs to get it checked out just in case. I am prone to getting coughs in winter and had one for weeks before Christmas. I got an inhaler from the doctor which helped.

lilgreen · 12/01/2020 08:07

Thanks to pp DH had a better sleep last night (Robitusson and Jakemans plus Sudafed up nose) Smile

lilgreen · 16/01/2020 07:38

DH still coughing though is improving in that it’s not really productive any more just the annoying tickle where he can’t finish a sentence. He is sleeping now though.
