DS(9) has a temperature of 40.1 after being given calpol - down from 41.9 earlier.
He is also complaining of a headache and pains in his fingers and ankles. He is sensitive to light, but that’s not unusual for him.
He is still eating.
This has been going on for 24 hours. Is it ok to just let him lie on the sofa and take regular calpol/ibuprofen, or should I be calling out of hours for a GP assessment?

If 40.1 is 104 in old money then I would definitely be ringing. That’s a very high temperature, and although it’s coming down I would still want qualified medical advice. I therefore would not be ringing 111, btw.

Emmelina · 11/01/2020 12:09

Although the calpol has dropped it down a little, 40.1 is still very high, and the headache, aches and sensitivity (even if that is usual regardless) would concern me. I would be calling for advice.

OneDay10 · 11/01/2020 12:11

That is very high
You need to take him in asap.

Moonflower12 · 11/01/2020 12:49

Please ring 111. He is in danger of Febrile convulsions at that temperature.

butterandbread · 11/01/2020 12:52

I’ve called 111 for lower fevers than that before, so I’d definitely call for some advice if I were you. Though chances are they’ll tell you to take him in anyway, they might at least make an appointment for you rather than having to wait in A&E.

SnugStars · 11/01/2020 13:01

I’d be ringing 111 as well, it’s not come down far enough for my liking. I hope he’s better soon.

Allfednonedead · 11/01/2020 13:05

Thanks for all the advice. I called 111 and they’ve made an appointment for us for 4pm at the Out of Hours gp.

How did you get on? Hope all is well

Allfednonedead · 12/01/2020 08:05

The doctor said there were a lot of high temperatures around, but his pulse was very high, so probably flu.
His temperature suddenly dropped to normal around midnight last night, and seems to have stayed there. Phew.

Thank you all for your advice and concern. Flowers

Glad his temperature has come down and hope he's feeling much better soon.
