HPV results - terrified and posting for traffic

Hi All

Posting on AIBU... I know I'm not but just looking for traffic as I know the other boards can be quiet.

Got my cervical screening results back today, and they say I've tested positive for HPV.

I'm so upset, shocked, and disappointed.

I've read historic threads but can't find anything recent which has prompted me to start this one

Not only do I have HPV but low-grade dyskaryosis and need to go for a colposcopy

I have googled and researched threads on here but they seem to be years ago.

Would welcome any up to date advice from women that have been through similar. Thanks.

I had a smear in 2017 which showed hpv+ but no abnormal cells so I had a repeat smear in 2018, still hpv+. Repeated in 2019,still hpv+ so I was referred for colposcopy. I was convinced I must have something seriously wrong with me and was petrified.
Went for colposcopy and they said my cervix was normal (phew) and took some biopsies. Had the results about 3 weeks later - all normal. Just go back for another smear this September to check all OK.

I'm sure you'll be fine op. As others have said, hpv is incredibly common and you're in the system now so you'll be kept a close eye on.
Good luck!

I had CIN 3 without the HPV virus. So previous poster saying you need HPV to develop cancer is incorrect.
Also had a the loop where you lose the top inch of your cervix. Opted to do it in a chair under local as doctor said short recovery time. It was not pleasant but certainly barable. The only painful bit was the giant needle they used to put a local in my cervix. If you need one of these and have a choice I would go for the general option and go out for the op.

I have had a colposcopy plus biopsy plus removal of the moderately changed cells. This was when I was 28 and I am now 44 and have had no further treatment. Also went onto have two children (if that's relevant). Don't worry about, it is quite a routine procedure. It is slightly uncomfortable but not massively sore. I felt a bit faint afterwards so if you have someone to drive you there it would be beneficial. I got the bus home on my own and would have done it differently if I'd thought of it.

My best friend and I both had those results from our first smear tests. We both had coloscopies which were fine, no further treatment required. And since then have had clear smears - not sure about her but I've had three since the first one and they've all been fine.

We've also both had the HPV vaccine, annoyingly.

Thank you so much everyone for taking the time to reply.

I didn't realise it was as common as what's been made out on this thread and I'm hugely reassured that it's not as bad as what I first imagined.

Thanks again all, I appreciate your support

Going through similar atm and also having pelvic pain. Completely understand how you're feeling!
I've got the high risk hpv and waiting on a repeat colposcopy, thankfully first one was ok they just lasered some bits but need to check if the hpv is still there as apparently the one I have is a high risk one? Also having an ultrasound tomorrow to check what the pelvic pain is!
Good luck to you! Xx
