Parents and names

If you decide to name your child by one name but say it is pronounced another way ( for example spell name Marie, but call her Mary) then you shouldn’t get cross whenever someone gets it wrong

I agree. I know a Louis pronounced Lewis and most people naturally call him ‘Looey’ as, although both pronunciations are valid Looey is more common, at least in my area. His parents get very annoyed if people have only seen his name in print and initially pronounce it wrong but I feel like if you choose a name with more than one pronunciation you have to accept not everyone will get it right first time.

That said, if a name is initially pronounced wrong once the person has been corrected there’s no excuse for getting it wrong again; it’s only forgivable the once!

I agree. This was at a school. Obviously the teachers of the child get it right but in an assembly, when someone who doesn't know the child get it wrong it seems a bit silly to complain

I know a Louis pronounced Lewis

I would really have to grit my teeth to pronounce Louis as Lewis.

How big is the school, who was the person who got it wrong and in what context? To be honest I would expect staff at my DC’s schools to know how to pronounce their names, but they are at small schools where generally staff know most of the students. At a large secondary school I wouldn’t expect every staff member to know every child, although would expect some staff, for example Head of Years, to know all students in their cohort. If names are being called out as part of a planned ceremony (Eg: giving out certificates/ awards) I’d also generally expect the person doing so to have checked with others in pronunciation for names first.

Yanbu

Pathetic to complain

FranticToddlerMum · 10/01/2020 22:21

YANBU, surely they should have seen this coming.

chocolatefudgecake17 · 10/01/2020 22:23

I know it's an example but anyone who spells it Marie and pronounces it Mary is an idiot. Yanbu

240 in a year group and an unconnected to the year group teacher announcing. Just seems like something that the parents must have experienced before and what do they expect ! Its an obvious mistake
