To not disclose this....

New puppy, needed a trip to the vets before we had even got insurance. Now looking for insurance - DH says not to disclose to insurance, just go to a different vet. AIBU to think that would be foolish and surely insurance companies would somehow have acces to that info? Its a skin condition which the breed is prone to. We were wanting lifetime insurance.

You can not insure a known condition. It’s fraud. They will cancel your insurance and it will be invalid. So pointless.

twoheaped · 10/01/2020 21:04

I think it may invalidate your insurance if you do not disclose.

Are you hoping to then claim for the skin treatment?
The insurance company will ask the vet if the dog has ever been treated for that condition, so you will be found out.

Helenluvsrob · 10/01/2020 21:05

My insurance you have to have imms and therefore have to have had the 8 week check and disclose anything they find.

Hence we have an exclusion for testified problems if any sort, as he had only 1 at 8 week check.

I asked if , after he’d had his bits removed and they were in a jar at the vets would they lift the exclusion. They said “ we will consider it “😂😡

Halloweenbabyy · 10/01/2020 21:07

Any known conditions will not be covered. I’d just leave it off and register at a new vets otherwise you’ll never be covered for it.

Alininja91 · 10/01/2020 21:13

I work for an insurance company and this would be classed as insurance fraud. Unless the insurance company specifies that it will cover a known condition (they are out there but premiums are higher generally) then it's insurance fraud which is a massive offence. The company I work for, (will not disclose) just put a customer in prison for 3 years for insurance fraud.

Nostrings457 · 10/01/2020 21:15

I agree that insurance will be invalid. What DH is dispiting is that, if we insurance him now & from now on go to a dofferent vets, the insuramce company would never know.

OP posts:
MitziK · 10/01/2020 21:16

I'd be having words with the breeder, myself.

avocadoze · 10/01/2020 21:18

I think your DH could be storing up trouble. I guess it might seem like a trivial thing to him, but it would be insurance fraud, and if you claim for that condition you’d always have it hanging over you.

tabulahrasa · 10/01/2020 21:19

Why didn’t he come with insurance?

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 10/01/2020 21:21

I would.

namechangetheworld · 10/01/2020 21:22

Yeah, that's insurance fraud. The breeder should have had insurance for anything that cropped up in the first 12 weeks - have you asked them?

Taddda · 10/01/2020 21:24

@Alininja91 3 years in prison for insurance fraud? Was it for £££'s?

Herpesfreesince03 · 10/01/2020 21:25

I’ve done this when i discovered a health condition the breeder didn’t disclose. Took him to the vets and they said get him insured and take him to a different vets. It’s not like there’s a national database of every single dog and their health problems to check, the insurance has no way of knowing

Alininja91 · 10/01/2020 21:28

@Taddda I can't disclose that. All I can say is, it's a serious offence that's gone on for some years.

On a side note, insurance companies (I'm led to believe) contact local vets to see if pet is registered elsewhere. (I'm guessing that would be if that have reason to be suspicious)

lljkk · 10/01/2020 21:30

Most people would do it, OP.
Your discomfort to live with.

zenasfuck · 10/01/2020 21:37

Did you buy the puppy from a breeder? It is usual for them to come with some insurance

namechange1041 · 10/01/2020 21:41

Not beating you up about it but I think that was a daft idea to get a puppy which is prone to health issues & then not take it to the vets straight away and get it insured asap, Confused
You sort of asked for that.
I also have a dog who's breed is prone to health issues but within a couple of days of having him I had him at the vets and insured.
Like another PP said, I'd contact the breeder as I wouldn't be happy at being sold a puppy which already has existing problems and isn't insured.

FFSFFSFFS · 10/01/2020 21:47

Its very low risk.

But the risk is that you get caught for insurance fraud.

Plus ask your husband how he thinks society would function if people did this kind of crap? The functioning of society is based on being not being dishonest. So does he want to be one of the people who is dishonest?

People who thinks its okay to do this kind of thing make my blood boil - they're either dumb and can't understand why insurance companies have rules and that everyone benefits from that. Or they're actively dishonest.

ToPlanZ · 10/01/2020 21:55

Insurance fraud is not ok.

Someone at my work has done it and got away with it (car insurance not pet) but it doesn't make it right. Yes he didn't have to pay for his windscreen but these people push costs up for everyone else. He also got a payment for a car crash injury that was actually from the gym.

FFSFFSFFS makes a very valid point, how is society supposed to function if we all behave like dicks?

TimeForPlentyIn2020 · 10/01/2020 21:58

The company I work for, (will not disclose) just put a customer in prison for 3 years for insurance fraud

Err... it wasn’t for pet insurance though, was it?

cakeandchampagne · 10/01/2020 21:59

When is insurance fraud okay? Never.
Don’t do it.

MollyButton · 10/01/2020 22:02

With my pet insurance, they said the condition would be included for one of my kittens if it hadn't reoccured for at least 1 year.

Littlemeadow123 · 10/01/2020 22:08

If you go to a different vets, they will request the details off your previous one

FranticToddlerMum · 10/01/2020 22:13

I would declare it. It will invalidate your insurance and will mean you're not accepted for insurance elsewhere either.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 10/01/2020 22:13

You won't get away with it; it's on that daytime fraud programme all the time. The vets will have a record of treating the dog and if the insurers look into it; they'll find it. You could then be reported to the police and cautioned or prosecuted for fraud. Not worth it.

Sadly you haven't insured in time to cover the skin condition.
