That a Vodafone shop wouldn’t accept cash in payment and it pissed me off?

So as the thread suggests then AIBU because a branch of Vodafone wouldn’t accept cash and it pissed me off?

I went into a Vodafone store around 4 weeks ago to buy a £20 memory card and I was aghast when the sales advisor told me that they didn’t accept cash because it was ‘a hassle’ and that paying by card was easier for the shop, it wasn’t the end of the day or anything like this where they had counted all their profits for the day.

I didn’t have my debit card with me that day so I went elsewhere to buy it but I was really pissed off, what if I was purchasing a brand new iPhone 8, or whatever the latest one is, at over £700 then would they have been happy for me to walk out their shop and spend that money elsewhere.

I have always suspected that actual cash will be done away with one day but not for a good few years at least and not in a Vodafone shop.

I didn’t look into this, I was just pissed off and wondered if any of you ladies/gents had experienced this and if so where, when and for how much?

And yes I’d strongly suspect (though not definitely assume) that someone paying for a large piece of building work in cash was doing so because they’d been offered an incentive by the builder to do that in order to dodge VAT.

Absolutely.

I'm rubbish about remembering to carry cash. Usually only catches me out in the occasional car park that doesn't have a card reader or an app option to pay.

jay55 · 10/01/2020 07:33

It's becoming common at smaller food places too. I'm usually fine using contactless but sometimes have cash id rather use up than have to go to the bank.

Megan2018 · 10/01/2020 07:34

I hate cash, use it as little as possible! I will be very happy when we are cashless, it’s a PITA for me. Have to drive 8 miles to an ATM here. I only use cash as a last resort!

SaskiaRembrandt · 10/01/2020 07:36

I can't remember the last time I paid for something with cash. I do have some though - after the Visa network went down a couple of years ago I withdrew some cash just in case it happened again. It was quite startling how difficult life was when I suddenly couldn't use my card.

Dementedmagpie · 10/01/2020 07:38

I heard this from a friend (,who wanted to use cash) that they wouldnt accept it.
But I've heard of other shops that only accept cash.

MinkowskisButterfly · 10/01/2020 07:38

There is a pub/restaurant near me that wont accept cash. I never have cash on me (DH prefers to carry cash) unless given as a gift, but still think it is ridiculous.

PhilCornwall1 · 10/01/2020 07:38
  • Yes! phil Also money laundering laws re cash are there for a reason*

I'm more than comfortable with people thinking that of me.

SellFridges · 10/01/2020 07:41

We’ve had a number of independent shops and bars open up locally. I can only think of one or two that accept cash. Suits me, and it’s obviously safer and simpler for them.

Circe32 · 10/01/2020 07:48

Businesses, esp. bars, have been moving towards card-only payments for some time now. As long as the policy is clearly displayed there shouldn't be a problem Confused

fiorentina · 10/01/2020 07:50

A lot of the lunch type places near my office in London no longer take cash. It’s all card.

jomaIone · 10/01/2020 07:59

God forbid a giant like Vodafone lose your £20 cash custom. How will they survive?!

I am all for cashless society. I saw a cafe the other day in Dundee that was cash only. Surely they lose more custom with people not having enough cash on them so not going in rather than the other way around.

I only ever have cash if an elderly relative has given me a gift. However my father in law is a painter decorator and always has a mass of cash on him and pays everything cash . Makes me very suspicious.

Supersimkin2 · 10/01/2020 08:15

EE shops don't take cash.

Cashless is a bloody nuisance for incidentals; I grab £50 from the ATM every week for odds and sods so I don't overspend.

Cafes and bars that don't take cash lose out from me. Suspect I'm not the only one.

ToastyFingers · 10/01/2020 08:15

I work in a shop and would welcome card transactions only.
No more having to count till and account for anything missing, no waiting while people faff around, rooting in their pockets or running out to the car for 20p. No more checking notes, banking money or sortting change, drunks arguing that you've overcharged/short changed them.

Plus, two branches of our store have recently been robbed, how terrifying that must have been for the men and women on shift.

chimpandzee · 10/01/2020 08:15

Lots of places where I am in London are now cashless, especially independent shops and cafes.

Notnownotneverever · 10/01/2020 08:15

We are well on our way to a cashless system. I am not a fan though as, just one of a few reasons, I think it is difficult for children and young people to understand money with experiencing the process with actual cash. It’s a basic way to understand the whole concept of earning, receiving and paying with money.

I dont agree, my dc know exactly what is happening with their money through their smartphones and the likes of Monza card/ap. They can budget on these aps really well.

isabellerossignol · 10/01/2020 08:24

Twenty years ago people were outraged because shops stopped accepting cheques. Now no one gives it a second thought. I expect it will soon be the same with cash. I can understand why businesses don't want to accept cash; banks charge a lot for handling it if they bank it, and if they keep it on their own premises it puts their staff at risk of being the victims of a robbery, which can often be violent, or involve threats of violence. For that reason I would have thought that people would welcome the move away from cash.

Marriedtoapenguin · 10/01/2020 08:25

There may also be costs attached to cash handling and/or no local bank branch/costs of security collection for possibly small amounts.

You wouldn't want to leave cash sitting in store until there is enough to collect as it would attract break ins.

We are moving cashless. I use cash very sporadically now and as the ways to pay other than in cash increase in number, this trend will continue.

DappledThings · 10/01/2020 08:31

On a related note I need to take a tram or bus in Sheffield in a couple of hours having never been there before. Does anyone know if I can use contactless or do I need to find a cash point at the station then buy something to break a note?

EmpressJewel · 10/01/2020 08:37

The ultimate - a cashless bank.

OH asked me to pay a bill for him and gave me £10 cash. I went to a branch of his bs k in my lunch break and they said that they were cashless, so I couldn't pay the bill.

So, I had to go to my bank and pay it myself.

AllergicToAMop · 10/01/2020 08:39

I so wish we could have been completely cashless when we had a shop. So does lots of others!
Burglaries and robberies are not fun. No cash, no pricks with knives!
No need to go to bank with takings which is yet another risk. No need to carry kilos of change from the bank. No worry about fake notes. Oh and no dickheads doing the "10? I gave you 20" scam.
Bliss.

SaskiaRembrandt · 10/01/2020 08:43

DappledThings Sheffield trams are don't accept contactless cards. You need either cash or a travel card. It's a source of constant complaint and I have no idea why they don't change - the company that run the trams do use contactless terminals on their buses.

Instagrump · 10/01/2020 08:46

Vodafone shops have almost no use. I don't even know why they're open.

Need your phone unlocked? Nothing we can do, you'll need to call XXX.
Need to ask a technical question? Go to www.wewonthelpcositsonlineonly.com
Have a broken handset? Here's the number for repairs.
Wanting X phone for X amount as stated on their website? I'm afraid you'll need to go away and buy it online Ma'am.

What do they do again?

DappledThings · 10/01/2020 08:47

@SaskiaRembrandt Thanks so much, I might take the bus option then.

Although I was quite excited about the tram. They are really exotic to me! Which really makes no sense because I used to live in Croydon which is the least exotic place on earth and I used them regularly there. But they still feel like a holiday thing somehow.
