Kindle suitable for night reading?

FruitandIce · 09/01/2020 22:33

I sometimes wake up at night and need to read a book for a while before falling asleep again. I know phone lights are supposed to be avoided when trying to sleep. I can’t read a paper book in bed because I would need to turn on a light which could disturb DH. Would a kindle be suitable? Thanks

Yes get the paperwhite.. no need for a fancier one.. cheap, does the job and you can read in the dark ( and dim the backlight, to the level which is comfortable) . I read at night of I can't sleep and it doesn't disturb dh

KM99 · 09/01/2020 22:41

I've got the paperwhite and it's ideal for that.

GrannyHaddock · 09/01/2020 22:43

Ordinary kindle 10 has a light too, cheaper than paperwhite. I've just bought one to replace a paperwhite which was beginning to fail.

SteeperThanHell · 09/01/2020 22:43

Me too.

Nat6999 · 09/01/2020 22:43

I read my books on my phone, I have an S10+, it isn't heavy & is big enough to be able to read comfortably.

Laska2Meryls · 09/01/2020 22:45

Make sure that you get the one 'without special offers' its about a £20 more but then there is no adverts on it ..

1vandal2 · 09/01/2020 22:47

Does the paperwhite have the option to have no light on too?

BarbaraofSeville · 09/01/2020 22:54

I keep my paperwhite on setting 6 out of 20. In the daylight it looks completely unlit, and then in the dark it's about the right setting to read comfortably.

The adverts on the special offers one is just a screensaver. It doesn't change the actual reading experience and I keep mine in a case that wakes up the kindle when the case is opened so I never actually see the adverts.

Laska2Meryls · 09/01/2020 22:56

Its a back light so during the day it doesnt seem to be lit at all .. it just looks brighter at night.. its not bright like a phone screen but sort of muted. Difficult to explain but its really just like a printed book would look like, both in the day and at night. Rather clever really

BikeRunSki · 09/01/2020 22:58

@1vandal2, you can adjust the brightness and turn it right the way down.

ferntwist · 09/01/2020 22:59

You don’t need to buy a Paperwhite - you can just download the Kindle app free on your phone, which is backlit. I almost wasted money on one before I discovered this. Now I use Kindle on my phone all the time to read when it’s dark - life-changing!

tillytrotter1 · 09/01/2020 23:00

I have an ordinary, quite old, Kindle on which I reduce the brightness if i read during the night, it's too bright for my eyes.

Suze1621 · 09/01/2020 23:02

Another vote for the paperwhite, it's much more comfortable on the eyes than reading a phone or tablet screen. I also love the fact that I can increase the font size (a lot!) so I don't have to wear my reading glasses in bed.

Mummyshark2019 · 09/01/2020 23:02

Paper white is awesome. Highly recommended

Ouch44 · 09/01/2020 23:03

I used to find reading in the kindle app on my phone too bright at night and would keep me awake. I have been using it again now the IPhone has dark mode. Don't know if other phones have this.

MsAwesomeDragon · 09/01/2020 23:05

I have a paperwhite and read at night without disturbing dh.

If I try to read using the Kindle app on my phone that does disturb dh as even with the lowest brightness it's still bright in a dark room, and illuminates my face. The paperwhite doesn't have that, and it doesn't illuminate my face.

SoupDragon · 09/01/2020 23:06

The paperwhite (or basic lit Kindle now I guess) is far superior to reading on a backlit phone or tablet.

BlueEyedFloozy · 09/01/2020 23:08

I've been reading on my paperwhite at night since DD was up every hour feeding 5 years ago - it is hands down the most prized thing I own. I thought i lost it once and was genuinely gutted at the thought of not being able to read in bed.

Phones and tablets just don't work for me, the paperwhite isn't backlit so it's more gentle on the eyes.

CluelessNewMama · 09/01/2020 23:12

The kindle paper white is one of my best ever purchases. Brilliant for reading in bed without disturbing DH.

Emmelina · 09/01/2020 23:25

I also have a paperwhite, it’s perfect for reading in bed! I can turn the screen brightness right down and it doesn’t disturb DH at all.

Baconking · 09/01/2020 23:42

There's an option to turn on/off bluelight on a kindle (in the drop down) which removes the 'bad' light and changes the colour to a tan..ish which you can brighten/darken

Costacoffeeplease · 10/01/2020 00:05

Paper white all the way, I have the iPhone app and there’s no comparison

bettybattenburg · 10/01/2020 00:07

Definitely a paper white.

LightDrizzle · 10/01/2020 00:10

Another vote for a Paperwhite

ActualHornist · 10/01/2020 00:15

If you go to amazon there are thousands of reviews as well as specs of each one.

Yes of course they’re suitable for night time reading.

@Baconking kindles are not backlit which is what produces the blue light which is what tablets and phones have. It is different.
