Why are Argos so annoying to buy from

If you order online to collect in store: “ok so that’s the bedside lamp you have ordered? Yes?”

If you pay online to collect in store: “ok so that is the double duvet cover in pink £15.99? And the shopkins playset for £11.99, is that right?”

I mean, it’s so irrationally annoying! No Karen, I didn’t mean to pay for a cheap little bedside lamp, I actually wanted a £400 tv, silly me!!

AIBU?!? I feel better for offloading that Grin

Urgh, the public are useless at ordering. I've had people ask specifically what is in a cocktail, watched me make it, then complained that they didn't like the main ingredient. Or people who don't mention an allergy until the food is in front of them.
I totally understand why Argos do what they do. They must have had a high volume of incorrect orders being returned or their staff facing abuse from the general public for them to include these questions at the till.

Does it really matter?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/01/2020 15:00

I find argos a weird shop at the best of times. Trying to explain it to the DC. Order number on paper, take to till, pay, wait 10 mins for it to appear and be called to get it. Ours is a really old style one, so maybe newer stores are a bit more technical and better. Ours is strange.

BoomBoomsCousin · 09/01/2020 15:00

I would find that really irritating too, but I have seen my mum pick up stuff she’s ordered online and I understand why they need to do it!

pigsDOfly · 09/01/2020 15:02

You also have this in places like M&S when you buy shoes. They'll often say the size as they're putting them through the till. I assume that's for the same reason, so you don't get home and find you've bought the wrong size or even two different sizes.

Just part of customer service.

HarrietTheFly · 09/01/2020 15:03

I am sure it is just to avoid errors. It might seem annoying but it sounds like it takes a minute to confirm that that is what you ordered, compared to the hassle of not finding out until you get home and having to do a return. Sometimes things do just come in a brown box, and if it was a similar sized item you might not realise until you got home and opened it.

LtJudyHopps · 09/01/2020 15:04

Why should the staff have to go back and forth to get the right item because you got a number wrong? How on earth does the sales assistant double checking affect your day negatively?
Bizarre.
If you don’t like interacting with people I suggest using online click and collect so you can pay at a machine.

safariboot · 09/01/2020 15:04

I've had issues with Argos, but YABU. Repeating the price helps you check you're getting the right item at the price you intended.

motherheroic · 09/01/2020 15:08

Don't see the problem. They are making sure that the order is correct on your side and from the person who retrieved the item from the back.

musicposy · 09/01/2020 15:19

I’ve never given this thought, but I do have a current Argos annoyance to share.

At the weekend I ordered a fairly large appliance to a store that said delivery today and they would hold until the end of this Saturday. As DH is the one with the car big enough to take it and not off work until the weekend, that was important.

Monday I get a text, “Good News! Your order is in store now. We will hold it until Thursday.”

No, Argos, that’s not good news. When I ordered you said Thurs-Sat; if you get it in earlier than you expected you should still hold it until the date you promised you would when I ordered it!

In the end DH was home early enough one day to pick it up, but it still made me irrationally annoyed.

viques · 09/01/2020 15:22

OP, I thought this exact thing too , so I wrote to Argos and said wouldn't it be a good idea if they only employed frontline personnel who had advanced psychic mind reading skills like a character on X men then they would know what your order was without all this back and forth shilly shallying. They would also save billions on those little pens and in store terminals. They didn't even have the manners to send me a reply. So annoyingly .

viques · 09/01/2020 15:23

Oops - so annoyingly backward thinking.

BreconBeBuggered · 09/01/2020 15:27

There now, you see? musicposy;s scenario is annoying. Checking that you meant to order a double duvet set and not a lawnmower isn't really worth more than a passing eye-roll, and only that if you're feeling especially tetchy. We're surrounded by thick people. No doubt I'm one of them from time to time.

Lulualla · 09/01/2020 15:28

@RightOnTheEdge
You can see what they have in the store. Just go to the till and ask to see the choices; I think you can do 3 at a time. I had to do it for the ben 10 action figures, and they printed out 3 "look" receipts. The counter staff bring the characters out and you can say yes or no to them. Rinse and repeat if you need to see everything they have. It is annoying but at least its not pot luck.

Rachelfromfriends1 · 09/01/2020 15:29

Really don’t see what reason you have to be annoyed. The staff sound polite/thorough/efficient.

Booksandwine80 · 09/01/2020 15:30

And if they didn’t check and you paid for the wrong item you would be happy?Hmm

Equanimitas · 09/01/2020 15:32

It's never occurred to me for one moment that there's anything wrong with this. How much does it hurt you to say the word "Yes" when they ask that question?

ThebishopofBanterbury · 09/01/2020 15:33

Yabu they have to ask, it saves them going to get the item from the warehouse and then getting back and being told it's the wrong thing. Common sense no?!

coconuttelegraph · 09/01/2020 15:35

I don't see what's annoying about that, they are checking you're getting what you wanted. Where's the problem?

DeepfriedPizza · 09/01/2020 15:39

There are more annoying things about Argos than this. Looking online and you get the slight hope that something is in stock at your local store but it’s actually in stock in a store eleventy billion miles away.

DappledThings · 09/01/2020 15:45

Ordered online, confirmed and paid at the self-service kiosk, no human interaction required. Done!

Pemba · 09/01/2020 15:59

YABU, it only takes 2-3 seconds for them just to double check. Like pps said, sometimes it is easy for numbers to get transposed etc. I really don't see why it is annoying. YABU also for using the name 'Karen' in a derogatory fashion to refer to an older middle aged woman. Maybe in 20 years people will be making fun of your name in this way.

Also concerning Argos, I have found in recent weeks that it is no longer possible to reserve items via 'click and collect' and pay in store on collection. All you can do is pay upfront online by adding to your 'trolley' and completing the purchase. Got a couple of friends in other locations to double check and they found the same. Quite annoying! Is it temporary because they have a sale on or is this a permanent change? Anyone else had this?
