If you have a mature magnolia tree ...

We've just had two 3m Magnolia Grandifloras planted close to the back wall of our garden for screening (we're overlooked by flats). We would eventually like them to grow to about 12m tall though it will take many years.

The trunk diameter is currently only about 10cm and the trunks are approximately 50cm from the wall. I'm worrying that they're too close but can't find any relevant guidance online.

Does anyone have a 12m+ magnolia and, if so, how wide is your trunk?

That should be fine, OP - there's a number of grandiflora on Oxford colleges that are 40+ feet high, and none of the trunks have a diameter of more than about a foot max.

Thanks - good to know!

Yes I have a very large magnolia about 40 years old and about 5 metres high . The main trunk width is about 1.5 m but it branches after about 2m . You do realise that they are deciduous so there won’t be much screening this time of year? Ps prune as little as possible.

They need to be at least a metre from the wall too. Google RHS advice or consult your local garden centre.

Mushy its a Magnolia Grandiflora so is evergreen. It sounds like you have a different variety.

Just Googling if there are different varieties of grandiflora now.
