Any M&S cafe workers out there?

Firstly theres no thrilling tale.. sorry folks. Or AIBU but looking for a speedy answer while I impatiently await customer services answer.

If you work in the cafe bit how do you make your scrambled eggs? Is it just egg? Does it come in a mix? And do you know the ingredients?

We took ds, milk intolerant/allergy, and struggled to find a dairy free option. Asked the woman behind the counter and she suggested scrambled eggs as they’re just eggs.. after that he had red cheeks and has now had 4 loose nappies. He’s never reacted to egg before but obviously curious incase he’s had something he is allergic too before I cut eggs out too.

They probably used butter with the eggs

nogooddeedgoesunpunished · 08/01/2020 20:17

I've asked before in other cafes and they've always said it contains dairy. My DS is also dairy intolerant and I only buy vegan options for him now when eating out. I love M & S food but find their cafe options limited. Hope your boy's okay but does sound like he's had dairy

LaMarschallin · 08/01/2020 20:20

I've seen them prepare scrambled eggs in our local M&S cafe and they just broke eggs into a container, mixed them together and microwaved them.
I don't know if it's the same in all of their cafes.

Selfsettling3 · 08/01/2020 20:22

Jumping on the bandwagon. Does anyone know of any dairy or soya free options in the M and S cafe?

paradyning · 08/01/2020 20:23

Stupid question but aren't eggs dairy??

rm1234 · 08/01/2020 20:26

@paradyning dairy products are made from animal milks. X

jarjarjam · 08/01/2020 20:26

I was in M and S cafe and asked a question about what was in a certain item and they were really nice and handed over a big ringbinder with the ingredients for every food item. Maybe you could just ask in the cafe for this if customer services don’t respond.

Lilkat · 08/01/2020 20:28

@lunafortheloveogod they use fresh eggs and a dash of double cream, should be standard across all the M&S coffee shops as they all get the same guidelines on how to prep stuff. Obviously they could make them without the cream but sounds like a lack of communication might have meant your son ended up getting dairy.

@selfsettling3 the jacket potatoes and some of the fillings or the soups are your best bet.

paradyning · 08/01/2020 20:30

Thanks @rm1234

Thefaceofboe · 08/01/2020 20:33

@paradyning no

Lunafortheloveogod · 08/01/2020 20:35

I specifically said hes allergic and listed no milk, butter, cream or cheese.. as well as his other more random allergies. So hopefully she’s not just ignored me.
There new vegan ready meals aren’t allergy safe for dairy either. We usually stick to smaller local bits but we weren’t near them.. would’ve been safer in spoons with chips.

Eggs aren’t dairy.

Anoisagusaris · 08/01/2020 20:38

How can the vegan ready meals not be dairy free?

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 08/01/2020 20:43

Not all vegan meals are ok for people with dairy/egg allergies due to cross contamination and manufacturing methods. Depends on the severity of the allergy and how much risk someone is prepared to take

PentreBachCymraeg · 08/01/2020 20:44

I used to work in a supermarket cafe for a very short while. The scrambled eggs would come ready prepared in a blue plastic bag.
Confused

Kyriesmum1 · 08/01/2020 20:47

The only thing our LO can have at m&s is the iced fruit bun x

Lunafortheloveogod · 08/01/2020 20:52

@Anoisagusaris it’s not prepared in an egg or dairy free factory so they can’t guarantee that there’s no cross contamination. So it’s at your own risk.

He’s had his anti histamines, hopefully he settles down soon for his bed.

(I know burger kings eggs come in like orange juice cartons)

My mom works in an m&s cafe. I just asked her and she said they use 4 eggs per portion and nothing else. She said they used to add single cream to the eggs a while ago but m&s changed it and it's been just eggs for some time.

Lunafortheloveogod · 08/01/2020 21:03

Well customer services were absolutely useless.. pop back in store n ask them basically. And that was me just asking the regular ingredients not if they’d make a specific batch at x o’clock in a certain store.

Just glad his reactions fairly mild, albeit unpleasant to him, unlike friends dd who’s anaphylactic. Just stomach issues n eczema.

Lunafortheloveogod · 08/01/2020 21:05

@blubell875 thankyou. Hopefully it’s just a dodgy tummy tonight.

Chocolateorangemochaplease · 08/01/2020 21:08

Hopefully it will be just a dodgy tummy. 🤞. I used to work at a pub at an airport and they used to sell ‘scrambled egg’ which came in the form of a powder and was then whisked up with water 🤢.

Selfsettling3 · 08/01/2020 21:09

paradyning dairy is anything made from cow milk and eggs are from chicken.

Lilkat thank you

patchworkelephant123 · 08/01/2020 21:25

It's frozen scrambled egg

Zara9698 · 08/01/2020 21:39

I would go back to the store and ask to speak to the manager. It sounds like their is a staff training issue here. Someone with a more serious milk allergy could have died. A young woman died from a chicken burger with dairy in it after being wrongly told it was dairy free, this happened in Manchester and I think it was a staff communication issue in the end.

ChocolateCoins19 · 08/01/2020 21:39

My friend does and she said 100% they put cream in. You need to complain nd contact the store to get them to be more vigilant

ChocolateCoins19 · 08/01/2020 21:40

And not frozen.
The poached eggs come in a vacuum bag they just stick in microwave.
