My parents have a holiday booked in Abu Dhabi in 2 weeks and my mum is thinking about not going (and losing circa £5k).

What would you do?

I wouldn’t go.
But, and this is rather unhelpful, I wouldn’t have gone anyway. I am rather bemused why so many brits flock there knowing how despicably women and the poorer families are treated. Slave trade still very much alive and well and the govt is openly corrupt.
Sorry, I know that’s not what was asked but it’s my emphatic NO, I wouldn’t go x

Sexnotgender · 08/01/2020 19:49

No, it holds no interest for me either given their appalling women’s rights record but it’s not my holiday.

I know how she feels - I have relatives there and feel twitchy about the situation. I visited not long ago though and it's an awesome place; I would, honestly?, check Home Office advice and only not go if it said anything dodgy.

I doubt you'd notice anything concerning once there.

Sexnotgender · 08/01/2020 19:52

She’s keeping an eye on the home office advice.
No advice not to travel yet.

Having lived there .. I see no attraction to the place and I certainly wouldn't be going there with the current situation. Your mother is right, most definitely not worth it

sonjadog · 08/01/2020 20:05

I would go right now, yes. In two weeks, it is impossible to say right now. Does she have to decide right now or lose her money?

AllergicToAMop · 08/01/2020 20:08

I would. I had traveled to ME when arab spring was in its highest. Family mbers are now due to travel there too. Just make sure the travel insurance covers acts of war and terrorism. Just for a peace of mind. Most don't!

Sexnotgender · 08/01/2020 20:08

No she doesn’t have to decide right now. I suggested she phone and ask if they can switch to another destination.

olivo · 08/01/2020 20:10

Yes, if I was booked to go, I would.

CherryPavlova · 08/01/2020 20:11

I’d still go. I like Abu Dhabi for a week of guaranteed sunshine and pampering.

Dipsyalx · 09/01/2020 21:44

We are booked to go for a family holiday in Feb half term and no idea what to do. I’ve never been to the UAE on holiday but heard it was amazing for families and wanted somewhere super hot! Decisions...

Sexnotgender · 09/01/2020 21:45

My parents have rearranged the holiday. BA allowed them to switch destination at no extra cost.

OP posts:
ErickBroch · 09/01/2020 21:47

The UAE is not in any danger. They don't need to rearrange at all.

Dipsyalx · 09/01/2020 21:49

We’re booked direct with Etihad and booked direct with the hotel 😬 so it’s pretty locked in. 🤷‍♀️

ContessaferJones · 09/01/2020 21:50

I'd go, it will be fine in the Emirates.

loutypips · 09/01/2020 21:51

Dp is due to go out there soon for work. Not happy about it, but nothing can be done until the foreign office say that travel isn't advised.

That's good that they were allowed to change without penalty.
