Aibu to think that actually they have been told to jog on ... After all, change is coming with a slimmed down monarchy and they are now too much of a spare to count.

Goodbye dear! Don't come back.

Geschwister4 · 08/01/2020 19:58

if William decided to abdicate then that would strip his children of all rights to the throne as well.

I don't think it would. He could abdicate his own rights to the throne, but George would still be next in line. And as William can't abdicate until after Charles that could be a long time yet.

Supersimkin2 · 08/01/2020 19:59

My arse they're off. It's Diana all over again - get the attention from a big statement, then carry on as normal (getting attention).

1Morewineplease · 08/01/2020 19:59

Yayyy!
And hope they leave their titles on the table on their way out too seeing as they won’t be needing them any more eh?

LoobyLou1976 · 08/01/2020 20:00

Its being reported that even if they move away they will still be relying on public money and their huge security costs will still come out of the UK taxes. This is even more ridiculous than it already is!
And there is no such thing as Royal Blood. Royalty is just a made up concept from a time when people didn't know any better. What's laughable and pathetic is that we still give it the time of day.

KatherineJaneway · 08/01/2020 20:01

This was bound to happen

DickDewy · 08/01/2020 20:03

Ooh another thread. Hmm

Sussexes btw.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 08/01/2020 20:04

Best news ever.
They’re won’t be 10 threads a week about them anymore.

Bunnyfuller · 08/01/2020 20:05

If they stop taking public money for fuck all, fabulous. But they won’t. Protection - now across 2 countries. Neither of them actually EARN money, they’ve been given a house etc etc

We’ll still be paying but they think they’re now allowed to be left alone.

Get rid of the lot of it, it’s utterly abhorrent against the poverty we have in the UK, let alone the world. It’s obscene that we all contribute to uphold these morally bereft lifestyles.

BoxedWine · 08/01/2020 20:06

I'm a republican, and would like the lot of them to jack it in, but I don't agree that it's ridiculous for the taxpayer to be funding their security even if they quit. The reality is that they have a profile and while the monarchy still exists, Harry is always going to be the grandson, son, brother or perhaps uncle of the British head of state. That will make him an attractive target to all kinds of undesirables and potentially put the UK in a difficult position. The monarchy would have to be a pretty long time abolished before this stopped being the case. And they have millions but round the clock security is fucking dear. So I'd rather pay and avert trouble, I think that's the lesser of two evils.

malylis · 08/01/2020 20:08

Lots of ignorance shown here about "public money", which bit of the Duchy of Cornwall (from whose profits fund all of the heirs of Charles) is tax payer funded? Harry is worth 30m on his own toom

QueenOfIce · 08/01/2020 20:15

Hopefully we will now see much less of them.

Bunnyfuller · 08/01/2020 20:21

@maylis - what work does a royal actually physically do to generate the funds from the Duchy of Cornwall?...

malylis · 08/01/2020 20:24

They don't do any work, but but no tax payers money pays for them. Their up keep is all from the Duchy. No civil list funds.

LaurieMarlow · 08/01/2020 20:25

what work does a royal actually physically do to generate the funds from the Duchy of Cornwall?

The money is generated from rents from the estate.

BlouseAndSkirt · 08/01/2020 20:27

They have not ‘quit’
They are stepping back from being ‘senior’ Royals.
As is only logical.
The siblings of the current heir are not prominent senior royals, so the sibling of the ‘next heir but one’ is hardly a major role.

Especially in a generation or more when Wm finally makes it to the throne.

Bunnyfuller · 08/01/2020 20:30

Who pays the rents?! And where did the land come from in the first place?!

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 08/01/2020 20:33

after Megan’s complaining about their lives and said they were “just existing “ when she was in Africa I re ally could not beleive their lack of awareness of the real world

But they don't live in the real world. They live in a very very different world to you or me. Where every move, every action, every word, what she wears, her hair, every gesture big or small is analysed and scrutinised and torn apart to find holes.

Imagine living THAT life. No amount of money can compensate for the fact that their lives are not their own.

I cannot believe people's lack of awareness (yet glee at commenting and giving out about) about THEIR lives.

I don't envy them. Any of them. Ever. Royals have problems too, mental health worries etc. Money doesn't protect you from that. Indeed sometimes money allows others to think they are entitled to slate you.

I honestly would rather my life than their's any day. I'd be incredibly happy to step back, voluntarily or forced!!

YappityYapYap · 08/01/2020 20:35

It's probably the best move to be honest. They likely don't want their child raised by nannies and under such scrutiny all the time. Meghan is close with her mum and probably wants to be with her mum more. I know people will say that she should have thought about that before marrying into and having a child with a member of the royal family but she was probably unaware that it would be as full on as it has been and Harry is doing what any decent father and husband should do and supporting his immediate family.

She wasn't a young girl when she met Harry. She already had a life, independence and her way in life. If they need a balance of his life and hers, I say good on them

LaurieMarlow · 08/01/2020 20:35

Who pays the rents?

The people who lease them. Duh.

And where did the land come from in the first place

Well that’s an excellent question. However, unlike Crown Estate money, Duchy money seems to legally belong to the individuals themselves (Queen/Prince Charles) though it is the greatest of grey areas.

malylis · 08/01/2020 20:36

" Where did the land come from in the first place" The Royal Estate, now there is further debate to be had about that but the whole "tax payers money" argument is rubbish.

Butterymuffin · 08/01/2020 20:36

if William decided to abdicate then that would strip his children of all rights to the throne as well.

No, it wouldn't. The line of succession stays the same, and each individual heir makes the decision to abdicate for themselves only. You're off the mark about how all this works.

Bluerussian · 08/01/2020 20:37

...after Megan’s complaining about their lives and said they were “just existing “ when she was in Africa I re ally could not beleive their lack of awareness of the real world

Meghan spoke very briefly after being asked a couple of questions in a documentary. Other than that she's said nothing. I think she has showed great restraint.

ohprettybaby · 08/01/2020 20:41

@SquareAsABlock
"I know it's Charles first, but everyone knows his reign will not a be a long one."
Charles is 71 years old. If he follows his DM's example, he could be on the throne for the best part of 30 years.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 08/01/2020 20:43

I can see the appeal for them. The worry is that they end up as a more expensive Prince and Princess Michael - no benefit from them carrying out Royal duties, but a cost in terms of security, accommodation etc. (Before anyone says it, I know the Queen pays for the Kents’ accommodation out of her personal fortune.)
