To ask how nursery and going into FS2 or reception works?

DD started mornings in nursery in September. She will move up to foundation 2 or reception in September this year.

Some more children started in the nursery this term, will they all move to start school
Together meaning these children have less time in the nursery class than DD has? Which would mean they start before they're 4? How does it work it's really confused me?

if you are in England, children generally start reception in the September after their 4th birthday. yes if someone starts nursery in December or April while they are 3 and then turn 4 between then and September then they will have less time at Nursery than others who started sooner.

it used to be that kids started in reception in this same staggered way with summer born children only getting a term of reception or even going straight into Y1 but it was shown that the reduced time in reception had a significant negative impact on results for years afterwards so now most children start reception in September. parents still have the right not to send a 4yo to school though.

Usually children start nursery the term after they turn 3, so it is likely that the new starters will only just have turned 3, therefore will likely turn 4 at some point Sept-Dec this year, meaning they would start Reception in the following year. However it is possible that the new ones are older and circumstance has just meant they started later (DD1 started at 3.5 as it coincided with my maternity leave, I couldn't have made the hours work otherwise).

Just checking, you have actually applied for a reception place, haven't you? Not just assuming your child will move up. If not you have 1 week to get the application in.

My DD2 did 5+ terms in nursery as she is autumn born. They took her once she turned 3 and then she stayed in nursery a full extra year whilst the older cohort moved on to Reception classes.

If in England If they are born in the same (school) year as her they will go to reception together ie they turn 4 between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020. Nobody has to do a nursery year.

If they are born on the (school) year below her they won’t ie if they turn 4 on or after 1 September 2020.

In England you get the 15 hours free the term after turning 3 so children may be joining who turned 3 between September 2019 and December 2019 which would make them the school year below her. These children may be in nursery for 1 year and 2 terms.

Usually January starters were 3 from September onwards so have these 2 terms then a whole other year in nursery before they start Reception.

The children who started after your Dd in Jan or April will carry on in Nursery in September when your Dd is due to start in Reception.

Just checking that you have applied for her school place - the deadline is next week and you do it through your local authority/council.
Both of my children went to nursery that was attached to the school they eventually got a place at, it was great, the transition was smooth as my children already knew the school and some of the staff.

This. You don’t just move up to school, you have to apply and wait for a place.

Pushpushpoosh · 08/01/2020 14:04

Yes sorry I do know you have to apply for a place and have done so it's just that out school is quite under subscribed so it's me assuming DD will just move up.

Thankyou for that, so the children starting this term are likely to be the year below DD in terms of school. I find it quite confusing 🙈

They'll stay in they wknt move up with her. Then they will be the year below but they will be some of the oldest in the year

SuperMumTum · 08/01/2020 14:21

It depends when their birthdays are. School is compulsory the term after you turn 5 but most start the September after you turn 4.

KittenVsBox · 08/01/2020 14:31

Depending on when your birthday is, you can get 3, 4 or5 terms of nursery funding. Those starting after Xmas are likely to be the ones getting 5 terms, so not moving up til Sept 2021.
How this reduces the summer born lag, I'm not sure.....

Pushpushpoosh · 08/01/2020 19:54

Strange, I never knew it worked like this, the class seems so busy now where as before there was only 12 of them. Thankyou all.

Our school nursery only took those turning 4 that year so they all started and moved up together . My eldest went to a private nursery and had a mix in her pre school class where some went to school and some stayed longer .
